These thresholds (30m for splashes, 100m for swimming...) are often repeated but without much justification. The most common argument is that the movement of swimming increases pressure, but that is greatly exaggerated. You would need to move you arm at around 25km/h (16mph) to increase the pressure by one atm. At the time when divers actually used watches underwater (and not a computer like today), most diver's watches where given for 150m, which seems barely enough to go out in the rain according to certain people today :) I think the technology to make water resistant cases has become so accessible that the industry wants arguments to sell watches that greatly exceed the needs of the people buying them. Hence those overly cautious recommandations. That said, no, don't take you VC in the swimming pool...

The problem is no company - for legal purposes - explicitly states what a certain watch is capable of. For example: If a watch is 30m wr, will humidity in coast cities (or on a cruise ship) damage the watch? What if it rains alot? And many questions like this. So I as a consumer have no choice but going for a watch that is over engineered for my usage. My reaction to 3bar wp watches like junghans is "I wouldn't buy it unless Ive got 2k$ to throw away, it being the worst case scenario." Instead, I'd go for Hamilton, mido, Chr.Ward or sinn. Which offer 10 bar or more wr with watches that are not technically dress watches but I wouldn't look out of place if I wear them with suit.
@mas3ymd

You can easily move your arm that fast. Moreover, as you may know, pressure is force over area, so modest forces ‘concentrated’ on small seals produce high pressures, particularly when there is movement of water (such as when moving your arm). Look up the Bernoulli equation.
@jpdemer5
@jpdemer5 4 ай бұрын
@@mas3ymd The seals are not exposed to the moving water - and there's no "concentration" of pressure. (Small area = small force, not enough to deform the sealing ring.) You can swim with any watch that does in fact have elastomer seals, which all 30M watches do. This does rule out really cheap watches with no rating whatsoever (and old watches with worn-out seals, regardless of their rating.)
@mas3ymd
@mas3ymd 4 ай бұрын
@@jpdemer5 No offense, but your comment is incredibly dumb. You have exactly zero understanding of basic physics, let alone hydrodynamics. Of course the seals are exposed to water - moving or not. How do you think the water gets there!? It moves! And that is exactly why the seals are out there. What the seals may not be exposed to is the full ambient water pressure for a period of time. But leave a watch under 1000atm of pressure and sooner or later the seals are going to be exposed to that pressure. This is basic high school physics, pal.

I have NEVER ever had a 30 m water resistance watch fail in the swimming pool. You can ABSOLUTELY swim or even snorkel with it. The only time it is going to leak is if the seals are compromised with age or physical damage. There is absolutely no difference between the seal longevity or damage resistance standard of the 30, 50, 100 or 200m watch. If that is your concern, get a divers watch. Other than that, feel free to swim with your 30m dress watch as long as you don't have a leather strap. -- I have done that for 35 years with everything from a Casio to a Swatch to a Longines dress watch to a Tag Heuer to an Omega to a fitbit. None has had any issues.

I got a Casio adventure watch many years ago. I don't know where it is for the moment and I have not used it for many years. But it is rated for 100m. I used it regularly for diving in pool down to 3,8m. One thing I reacted about was that it occasionally got fog inside the glass. But it disappeared after a while and did not cause problem. I find it remarkable that while flashlights rated for 1-2m in tests survive 1m submersion, watches rated for 30m often are claimed to barely survive a shower. In a shower there are not even a hydrostatic pressure at all and the hydrodynamic pressure in a shower, as well as when swimming, is a negliable factor for watches. At 30m depth the pressure is actually 4atm, not 3(it's already 1atm at the surface). So how it comes it would not even be suitable for swimming? The answer has to be that the watch in that case hardly cannot have been tested at all at hydrostatic pressure under water...

Can't seen to find a satisfying answer why a 30m WR watch is not recommended to swim with. All you did was repeat this line, but I was hoping for an explanation of why/how survival at 30m could also fail at 1" - 3' depth. I was thinking a Janet Evans robot would make a good waterproof pool tester, but the folks at the watches subreddit seem to eviscerate any notion that additional forces/movements is anything more significant than a half meter difference with a static test.

kinda hilarious, that, especially in the EU, we usually go overboard with regulations and customer protection, however you can casually buy a watch that literally says "30 meters water resistant" but will take damage from dropping it into a pool.

Hah....dunno about that Teddy - all I know is I buy what speaks to me and what I like - whether that constitutes anybody's idea of good taste other than my own opinion is for others to decide and is a different matter. I used to like chronographs much more than I do today (I have, amongst many others, 4 Breitlings, a Steve McQueen Monaco ReIssue, a Speedmaster Professional and a gorgeous Zenith El Primero) but as I get older I seem to prefer the simplicity of 3 handers - maybe its my eyesight deteriorating as I get older (!!!) - but I like the legibility that 3 handers provide now!!.

I'll wager than there are many people who don't realize just how ambiguous the term "Water resistance" is ( Myself included when I first thought of buying a watch I could wear when surfing) I simply thought that "30 meters" meant you could go down to around that depth & everything would be Jake.......ah...not so! So for many people considering a water resistant watch, this "In depth:" (Sorry about that! ;)) guide to the terms used, and more importantly just exactly what they represent, could save a lot of people ruining what would otherwise be perfectly good watches. Well done again mate!

Excellent video referencing the ISO standards, water resistance and real life performance. 300 meter water resistance is my recommendation for daily work around the house, garden garage as pressurized water can push past 200 meter resistance. Also resistance rating is when all seals are performing to spec while they will deteriorate with time. As a watchmaker I service my watch once a year, rear and a half for a watch I wear daily. I check, lubricate, and/or replace seals (typically case back, crown and if applicable pushers. That can get expensive for anyone who takes their watch to a trusted professional.If you are a watch nut, consider getting the rudimentary watch tools and some training online to learn to do this yourself, especially if you have a collection as you likely will find this fulfilling it will save money. That said not everyone is inclined to try this and some models should be with a professional unless you really know what you are doing and understand manufacturer recommendations, have all the right tools, parts and supplies to avoid any mistakes. My daily watch is a Hydroconquest with an L688 automatic movement having 300 meters water resistance. My favorite drivers/water resistant watch is a Blancpain 50 Fathoms chronograph with the sapphire bezel. I love my 1965 vintage Submariner as it has great sentimental value. I like the Breitling Avenger having serviced a chronograph and was impressed at this price point the sealing design for the pushers which support a 300 meter rating. Congratulations on 11K subscribers!!! Teddy you are making some fantastic productions, keep up the great work!

Nice informative and interesting topic, it's good that everybody gets to know the real water resistance of a watch. I give you the simpliest example: Everybody tells you to not swim with a casio f91w, but the reality is that I have one that I wear at the beach and I swim with it and the watch is perfectly fine. I don't go too much underwater, don't dive with it but I swim with it and the watch says only "water resistant".

I have heard that of many Casio and Seiko 5 owners. I would never recommend doing it, but I think getting most of these watches wet won’t kill them. Jumping in the water with an elegant dress piece... eh that’s a different story.

Personally, I don't think you could say it was particularly informative, I feel your comment is slightly sycophantic. The most interesting question of how the industry adopted the misleading '30m' standard was recognised as an issue and yet unexplained. Are dynamic splashing and arm driving pressures at 2m REALLY greater than a further 28m of static pressure? Seems hard to believe. Is 30m just figurative, a marketing excused 'standard'? Do '30m' watch test samples actually get lowered to 30m or 37.5m (1.25x)? If not, why the hell not? If this video said I'm sorry I missed it.

Thanks for the video. It is honestly unsettling that the water resistance ratings are so misleading. The industry as a whole should really address it. I wasn't aware for quite some time and thankfully never ruined a watch because of it. I assumed that 30m meant it was absolutely fine to swim with. There is no reason to think otherwise. Now I won't swim with a watch that is marked anything less than 200m. Even then, I wouldn't take my Seiko Alpinist in the pool even though it is marked 200m. It just doesn't look like a watch for the pool, lake, or ocean.

My favorite diver's watch is the Rolex Submariner. It's the most iconic watch of all time and, even though I don't have one, I still respect the impact it has made on the watch industry. If I have to pick a watch I own, however, I would pick the Casio Duro, which in my opinion is the world's best value diver.

Is quartz less reliable than mechanical? Is it really just concern about battery failure? What about solar? Considering that at best dive watches are backups to dive computers these days, the odds must be pretty high that batteries in both devices would die on same dive?

I can get lazy, Teddy, on keeping up with these higher end complexities. Most of my pieces are just too gorgeous to get them wet, lol. Hey, if I'm around the pool in Palm Springs/Vegas it will be my SKK 009 or perhaps even my humble but aesthetically pleasing Casio Duro. No way the higher end stuff. Best Regards, JP

I agree with you JP. I am tempted to pick up a beater diver just for those instances as well. Jumping in the water with hundreds of dollars (if not more) on the wrist just doesn't seem smart.

How can I understand if a vintage piece with the "waterproof" and no meter mark is suitable or not for swimming?
@androidkenobi
@androidkenobi 2 жыл бұрын
according to youtuber wristwatch revival, no watch that is vintage should go into water without re-testing. if u've seen some of the states that the stems have been in, it's like an open window on a submarine

My biggest surprise was to discover that I can't swim or do water activities with a Patek Philippe Aquanaut or Nautilus, because the water resistance of these watches is only 30m. Patek Philippe should change the name of these watch collections to something not related to the ocean.

Thanks for the video mate! So basically, when Im looking to swim/chill at the pool I should get 100m+? Until now I only got 30m which I dont really mind because all of my watches so far are on a leather strap and more on the dress watch side, but I want to buy a real fieldwatch (got the seiko 5 one already which got nice looks and was relatively cheap, so good for everyday and maybe rain), but Im looking to buy the Hamilton Khaki Field which is 100m. I dont swim regularly but I like the idea of a fieldwatch being able to swim with for a short period of time without damaging it.

Q&A Who makes the best lume for watches?
@matthewreagan2384
@matthewreagan2384 6 жыл бұрын
I prefer when atm are used. It forces the user to read the manual and find out 3 atm means almost nothing. 5 atm okay pool side, 10 atm in the pool, and 20 atm go for it unless it's vintage. A static pressure test of a brand new watch is a good benchmark, but it does not mean a 3 atm watch will be okay in 30 meters of water. That being said manufacturer tend to understate the wr. My 3atm casio f91w, does jut fine in the ocean.
@TR_Swan
@TR_Swan 3 жыл бұрын
I just came across this video. So 30m is around 3atm = approximately 98-100 feet of water. Your saying that a 30m watch is no good for swimming? If I am swimming at 30m I have other issues. I was a diver for years. The deepest I would free dive (no tanks) was 30 FEET. This is confusing....

1 bar = 10 N/cm² On earth's surface approx.: 1 N = 1 kg / 10 N/kg, so: 10 N = 1 kg 1 kg water = 1 l = 1 dm³ = 1,000 cm³ -> 10 N = 1,000 cm³ (1 l) of water. ==> 1 bar = 1,000 cm³ of water / cm² = 1,000 cm = 10 m

Some watches you're just paying for the ISO certification. In order to certify a watch for Diving, R&D has to be involved. Driving up the cost of the watch. If you're an average Joe who doesn't Deep Dive, getting a non Dive certified watch will save you money--if not, get you better materials like Sapphire or solid end links for the same price.

Another one for the Q & A....what are your thoughts.....or recommendations....for storing your watch collection.....so that they are suitably protected, but at the same time able to be viewed with relative ease? Glass cases? Prefabricated watch display cases? In a shoe box under the bed? :) Like to hear how you store your collection.
