Linda Young's, voice over on Frieza, was what i remembered when i had watched Toonami on the Cartoon Network back in the late '90's and early '00's. I always thought that Frieza sounded and looked kind of flamboyant which made sense learning that the voice actor is a female, which is cool her voice did in fact matched the Frieza's character well. I honestly was happy they replaced Frieza's V.A with Chris Ayres. That 90s nostalgia shit can't overwhelm how wheezing she made Frieza sound. Chris made Frieza sound Sadistic, Maniacal & Pure Evil. Linda didn't come close & unpolished. Sorry Not Sorry she was good for the moment but she was out done with a BETTER Voice Actor. Linda Young and Chris Ayres just nail it as Frieza's English Voice. They're able to radiate both the pompous and terrifying nature of one of Dragon Ball's best villains. Also, I gotta give credit to Daman Mills who is more recent to the list, hes definitely on par with both. Chris and him are almost indistinguishable.

pauline newstone and linda young. 98- 2001 toonami had the ocean dub on tv so what I remember from most of the early seasons were ocean dub voice overs. I definitely thought newstone made frieza sound sinister but more in a contempt and pompous way while linda young's delivery included more wrath and anger. Both are great.

Assuming that my understanding of the American audience's impression on Masako Nozawa is correct, I must say American audience is expecting from Goku a character that he does not possess. A common critique of her performance is that "Goku sounds like a manchild." Unfortunately, however, as many geeky friends abroad came to know later by taking a closer look at DBZ and our culture, he IS in fact a manchild, with no resemblance of Superman and Batman who are both ironclad protective and adult figure. Whether Americans like it or not, he is intended to be so by Akira Toriyama LOL. As exaggerated as it is, again, TFS does a pretty darn good rendition of Goku. ALL of us Japanese recognize Goku as a overgrown Peterpan with the power of Unicron, and as such, deem Masako's performance as 'perfect', and tend to conceive the American audience's perspective on her as 'bazaar.'

Well, to be honest, I agree with you 100% as of 2017. But it turns out that, when Nozawa was younger (~1990), she WAS doing the perfect of acting "the battle-maniac manchild" ^^ As funny as it is, Batman-type masculinity is not expected of Goku in our culture. Truly, cultural gap is an interesting topic. But you know what's funny? In my opinion and in many of my people's opinion, Naruto dub team have been acting to our likings from the get-go. For some reason, the cultural gap did not become a problem for Naruto dub.

It was a bit of a shock to get used to the shift in voice from Pauline Newstone to Linda Hunt when Funimation took over the U.S. Dragon Ball rights. I do sometimes wonder how Pauline Newstone would have carried on the role if she went up to the Destruction of Namek arc. I got more used to Linda Hunt's voice when Frieza was now in his Final Form than in his First Form.

Scquagilychicken No. The people who like Chris tend to have either been exposed to him first, or prefer a performance much closer to the Japanese. In fact, I don't even fit into either; I was exposed to Linda Young first, enjoyed her as Freeza, but grew to prefer Chris as I was exposed to him more and more. That said, I generally prefer sub these days anyway, so a performance closer to the OG Japanese may well be more of my fancy now than if I were a dub-only fan.

Goodness, the professionalism that came out of that original Ocean Dub is unmatched to this day. The voice acting was just so over the top it was amazing. The music made everything extra intense. Even the compression and editing in the vocals just gave it an edge that never came back during Funimation's take on it. So the OG Japanese is the one for me, lol.

I always felt that Linda’s is the most iconic and sinister, albeit a tad cliché, she really gave him the best personality imo. Chris gave Frieza the feeling that he was incredibly intelligent, which is how I’d imagine a superior being like Frieza to be - Intelligent and spoiled/snooty, and diabolical. At the end of the day, I appreciate what they both brought to Frieza, but Linda’s raspy evilness really works out to make the best Frieza. The other voice actors are great also!

I'd switch Linda with Pauline, for nostalgia's sake, but there's no doubt Chris and Ryusei are at the top. As Chris Sabat said, when they cast Frieza, they had terrible reference material, and didn't really know Frieza's character. Chris was the redemption for that, and him and Ryusei are so different YET similar, he captures those subtle qualities to Frieza's personality, and it's even more apparent in RF. Hate to say it, but the others just aren't Frieza.

Why do _I_ prefer LittleKuriboh as Frieza? If you're not limited to official voice actors, Frieza, even when voiced by Ayres, still sounds like a girl at times, and LittleKuriboh never makes Frieza sound like a girl at all. He also has a more gentlemanly feel than the others (not counting Nakao). But all that aside, if you are limited to officials, I will go with Ayres; he and Billany are the voices that come into mind when I think about Frieza. (Also, Billany makes funnier lines than Linda Young.)
