Studied intermittently at Ali Akhbar Khan's School of Indian Music in San Rafael. You can totally hear the phrasing and sitar timbre with the slide..

I just discovered Derek recently and his playing, dynamics, technical ability and intuition with other musicians is just sublime. THEN.. I discovered the Tedeschi trucks band and WOW ! What a combination with Susan's magnificent voice, all those lovely brass instruments and the keyboards, drums, backing vocals etc and then Derek's guitar as well. HOLY CRAP.. Blown away so I am :0)

Derek is beyond amazing.. knew of him from way back when i stumbled upon a video where he was with John mayer and frusciante .. he was unknowingly showing off the guitar god that he is.. heck even Fru looked like he was having a hard time keeping up and i say this with utmost ADORATION for fru !!!! Mayer just plain and simple looked like he was being schooled..

I saw this band a couple years ago & believe me it's 100% Derek Trucks. Everyone in the audience was there to see Derek play, when he took a solo everyone went silent, by the time he was done the place was on fire, he had this aura about him, never said a word, stood in the background during the songs, but you could sense it. He's an absolutely terrifying guitar player, electrifying stuff....

i saw him in a freakin barn in Virginia back in 2001...the acoustics were horrible, but it didnt matter...had a blast...met him a few years later, and got to hang out on the bus with the band...very cool bunch of guys...he was joking that Todd Smalley is always stoned...haha

Actually, Susan, nobody comes (or buys the cd) to hear you sing. They come to hear Derek play. Don't get me wrong: Tedeschi's singing is good -- although she seems to approach every song the same way -- but there are a lot of vocalists out there as good or better. Derek Trucks, on the other hand, is one of the great guitarists of his generation and possibly the best slide guitar man on the planet at the moment.

His slide playing is incredible but he is way too busy for me and uses way to much vibrato he needs to slow down and listen between the notes the space between the notes is what is important, I like Warren and Duane's playing much better.

Mark Nairn I agree 100%. He is VERY talented but it drives me crazy how he "rakes" or "takes a deep breath" in between notes on the fretboard. It has really gotten worse the past 3 years because he has incorporated it on nearly every slide solo he takes. Alot of players comment about this very same thing as well. Thats the ONLY issue I have with his playing but I guess its just his own style and how he chooses to separate his playing and sound from Duane and others.

theycallmejpj when you rake you brush the pic over some strings lightly (almost muted) and then strike the string you were aiming for. Very hard to explain what I mean but I’m sure there are lessons on the technique. If you’re a beginner it’ll probably be outside of your comfort zone
