Genius! I couldn't agree more that Mr. Ayala's version of the national anthem conveys a more intensified sense of patriotism. It's impressive that he was able to do this by just doing a few minor tweaks. He used a more Filipino-like beat; and emphasized on pronouncing and enunciating the words the way Filipinos should be. And his suggestion to change "mamatay" into "magmahal" is nothing but timely. Like most people, I agree that dying for your country is probably the ultimate display of patriotism, but we are no longer in an era where we need to actually suffer death just to show that we care and love our homeland. I bet most, if not all Filipinos, would agree that when thinking about our national anthem, two lines would almost always come immediately to our minds - "Bayang magiliw.." (the positive start); and "Ang mamatay nang dahil sa'yo" (the negative ending of the song). I think Mr. Ayala is just trying to say that since "mamatay" is in the last line of the anthem and most certainly will leave the most impact, it would just be better a choice to use a word that actually conveys a more positive vibe rather than a negative one. A different approach that he could have chosen though, since changing "mamatay" is too much of an alteration of the original piece, is to replace "dahil" with "para". I mean hey, to die "for" your country sounds better and more patriotic than to die "because" of your country right?

I highly appreciate Joey Ayala's intelligent arrangement of both the words and music of the national anthem in a 6 tempo rhyme. It really is commendable the best educative critiquing I've ever head on both academic and musical stand point of view. Ang Lupon Ng Pambansang Wika ay nararapat bigyan ng pansin. Here's my two cents. Our flag can be switched to the red on top in times of war. So, maybe in times of war, we sing the version we've been accustomed to, and in times of peace, we sing Mr. Ayala's version. Well, not everyone will agree with me since this may require a lot of work, but I think it would be nice to have a national anthem for peace and for war.

Ang pumatay ng dahil sayo dapat, techinically speaking a struggling country because of foreign repression has no real use of dead people with live enemies. The goal would be is to kill our enemies and make them die for their country instead. Sa boot camp, we are not trained to die and allowed to die unless ofcourse if given the order to do so, but its an overstatement but nonetheless gives us idea of how it's supposed to work. we salute this hymn every monday and friday during garrison and we are always reminded jokingly by our CG here in mindanao to make not do the last lyrics hehe.

Really loved the change of tempo and the vibe of it it sounds like something we can sing after all the hardships pain and suffering that we have been through. But changing the lyrics of "ang mamatay ng dahil sayo" to "ang magmahal ng dahil sayo" is a big NO. That line makes us remember what our country has been through all of the soldiers that fought for our freedom.

But songs aren't how we record history, we do that with books and museums, and the like. Songs are for sending messages. So even if we change the song, we wouldn't necessarily forget the martyrs of our history. And a message of love not war is a much better message in my opinion.

Well, the only problem is that, as Joey Ayala said, it's an illegal act. What he's done is nothing short of subversive because he's not only changed the meter to a 6-count - it IS a military march after all - he's changed the lyrics. There's a LEGAL way of singing the Lupang Hinirang. And unless that changes, you're not going to hear this version sung. To be fair to the national anthem, that last part was misinterpreted. The anthem is not asking you to die: it's saying that the sons and daughters of the Philippines are willing to die for the country. The reasons why are in the rest of the lyrics. In fact, there is a reason why the Lupang Hinirang was composed that way by Julian Felipe. It was sung by a band first, during the proclamation, and was in fact first named as the Marcha Nacional Filipina, as requested by Emilio Aguinaldo. Jose Palma's poem was the basis for the lyrics. It was not meant to woo like many kundiman do. It does not present the "swaying" motions of Filipinos that Joey Ayala said. The context of our national anthem is that it was written in a time of struggle to commemorate the birth of a new nation. The Lupang Hinirang was talking about a country recently born from a war of independence and presents not our hospitality but the side of us that has a burning desire to be free and the willingness to fight or even die for that freedom. Which is why it is a martial march. As far as I know, most national anthems are marches. Because most nations were born from the crucible of war and these were war songs.

I disagree with Mr. Rob' Ramos. The law that prescribe how Lupang Hinirang should be sang is UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Sec. 4, Art. III of the 1987 Constitutions says "No law shall be passed abridging the freedom of speech, OF EXPRESSION, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and petition the government for redress of grievances." That law obviously is unconstitutional since it controls us on how we sing the National Anthem and they are not giving us freedom on how to express our love for our country by our own rendition of the National Anthem. Someone should go to Supreme Court and ask that law be declared unconstitutional. The problem with the government they are not sending them to jail so it will be questioned before the Supreme Court. However, I agree that as long as that law is in effect it should be followed but it should be questioned before the Supreme Court.

Navea, if I may state my opinion, given that yours truly is Polish by blood, at Pinoy sa puso lang: I have come to admire and love the Filipino people. During some time I had the honor of forming part of the Philippine Performing Arts choir of Chicago, in which I was the lone tall-nosed puti and, as a matter of fact, through considerable effort I learned by heart the Pambansang Awit, feeling that respect totally obligated me to perfection, and I felt EXTREMELY honored to sing it with the choir at each presentation, most conscious of the love of Bayan, pride, nationalism and historic heroism of the Filipino people. In my humble but steadfast opinion, I find it to be totally reasonable and admirable that the Pambansang Awit is honored and respected to the extent of such formal regulation. I believe that this song is sacred and untouchable and there is not the slightest room for deviation from a perfectly straight line. Just as with the flag. For example, one young Pinoy had the bright idea of tampering with the flag, probably thinking liberally like G. Navea, by painting it with one "slight" "variation": he replaced the Sun with none other than ...a cannabis leaf! I gave him a piece of my mind, reminding him of how that flag, for which so many have heroically fought and died, is SACRED and defacing it in any manner whatsoever is totally unacceptable. I believe that Freedom of Speech has nothing whatsoever to do with the established rules to preserve the due respect for and integrity of the National Anthem. We all have heard how the National Anthem is sung in the United States in public events: In an overwhelming majority of cases, variations and "embellishments" are thrown into the singing that truly disgust me, making it sound like an Africanized pop song -atrocious and intolerable. I am considering moving to the Philippines in retirement; if and when China attacks the Perlas ng Silanganan, most definitely "Amin ligaya, na pag may mang-aapi, ANG MAMATAY NANG DAHIL SA IYO!"

How would you expect the change of this heartwarming song , if you don't start the change now? This version has a positive reinforcement that could change how Filipinos, even those of our uneducated countrymen, will serve the Philippines. The change is not a destructive one, Yes, Mr. Ayala did something unconstitutional and "illegal". But Philippine Constitution is already faulty. I'm not saying we should by pass the constitution because it has TOO many holes. However we can patch those holes and mend the cracks. The version Mr. Ayala sung didn't harm anything or did something to disgraced the meaning of the song. The version enhances the song. It made it more heartfelt and understandable by every single Filipino. ^_^

Sa opinyon ko, kundiman ang mas angkop dahil sa mga sumusunod na kadahilanan: Ang awit ay hindi agresibo, ito'y nagpahihiwatig ng pagpapahalaga sa ganda ng bansa at ng pagmamahal sa bayan. Alalahanin mo nung nasa mababang paaralan ka, hindi mo naman lubos na naiintindihan ang mga titik ng awit. Tinandaan mo ito mula lang sa tunog. Para kang nagsaulo ng Kpop. Tama lamang na linawin ang pagbigkas upang lubos maintindihan, lalo na ng kabataan. Sa huling linya, "magmahal" o "mamatay" (o iba pa)? Buong linya: "Aming ligaya na 'pag may mang-aapi ang _____ ng dahil sa'yo." Hindi maganda ang mensaheng ibinibigay ng: "... ang mamatay ng dahil sa'yo" - ang bansa ang dahilan ng kamatayan mo? Actually its "Aming Ligaya NA pag may mang-aapi. However, the song does give a pessimistic feel, as if the only way to find elation during invaders is to die. The song tells the cultural environment during the revolutionary days, where being a patriot is a death sentence. in the original Spanishm the last two lines go like this. "Es una gloria para tus hijos, Cuando de ofenden, por ti morir." It is a glory for your children, when offended, to die for you. Personally the English version of the Anthem is much more positive. "Oh, never shall its shining fields Be dimmed by tyrants might." Which is the real intent of the anthem, that no tyrant shall dim the light coming from this "Chosen Land."

The final words are " But it is glory ever, when thou art wronged, For us, thy sons to suffer and die." Luminaw bigla. Sa Filipino version kasi, lalo na dahil dun sa awkward phrasing and para lang tumugma sa composition, para ngang pessimistic. Di naman ineexplain yung lyrics sa school. Sauluhin ang mga naging crush ni Jose Rizal at mga paborito n'yang libro, sure, intindihin ang national anthem? Nah. Inisip ko na lang na baka ibig sabihin nun, ligaya natin pag yung mang-aapi e mamamatay dahil sa Pilipinas. Imbes na mamatay para sa Pilipinas para ipagtanggol ito sa mang-aapi. Why can't they be positive inspiring words like those examples you gave. Kayla karamihan sa atin ay mag martyr. Young people are studying to be domestic helpers because they believe and proud to be called heroes. Joey Ayala must have a point but he will never understand the core of every word put into this song to fit into the whole history of the Philippines or the feeling they felt. As a member of a choral ensemble, we were taught that in singing, the words should be sung and enunciated the way we would say them as if we are speaking normally; no other than the world renowned Philippine Madrigal Singers express songs in this way. Joey Ayala has done that, and it is much clearer. It's just sad that no one is allowed by law to express the national anthem that deviates from its prescribed, nay, mandated way of singing to the letter. Since music is all about expression which conveys a message, the freedom to express this beautiful song is restricted. Perhaps it is time to review the law.

I believe the changes he wants to impart on the National Anthem is of good intention; the changes doesn't necessarily mean changing the past or the history itself. It just so happen that patriotism nowadays demands a different way of showing it. Somehow following the norms and tradition could limit our potentials. I love the way the syllables are spaced differently in this version, but I simply cannot agree with replacing 'mamatay' with 'magmahal' and the way he was hinting with replacing it altogether with 'magpayaman.' That is defeatist! The problem is that not a lot of Filipinos even bother learning the actual words of the anthem. They're mostly concerned with just memorising the the lyrics and parroting it back when they're asked. That last line simplified, roughly translates to: "Should invaders arrive, we will gladly die for thee[our country]." Replacing it with "magmahal(to love)" or magpayaman"to enrich[with money]" is simply wrong and an insult to our national pride. We REPEL oppressors, not embrace them. We sacrifice our lives for the country, not make money off of it. The Anthem is one of the last vestiges of our revolutionary past, something a lot of Filipinos have already, sadly, forgotten. I commend how he makes the words clearer, but changing the one part where we profess the sacrifices we make for out country is too far!

I think he said the "magpayaman" one as a joke. But I see your point. But I also see his point where death IS a negative connotation, and this song is taught to every Filipino child, who may not understand 80% of the words, but would clearly understand what "mamatay" means. I think other than teaching kids how to sing the national anthem, there should be another course later on (around high school), wherein they should dissect the meaning of it all. I studied in a private school, yet I never had that. They just made us read Florante at Laura, Ibong Adarna, Noli and El Fili.

I would disagree. When you love, it doesn't mean you don't fight. In fact it means the opposite. You fight harder because you love. I find that it makes more sense--to love when there is strife makes for better human beings, for better Filipinos. It's nice and all, and Joey Ayala is a great artist, but the fact that a lot of people find the National Anthem is not because of how it is sung. It's simply because of the fact that you get bored when something's done the right way. Not all, but most Filipinos. I like the National Anthem as it is. I put my hand in my chest when I sing it, stop and stand when a guy or a company sings it, and I stand for it inside cinemas during last full show. it was along time since my last music lesson... i reckon this is a creative lecture on musicality keeping with the dynamism of patriotism. among the many points that he made, what struck me most was his presentation on the last verse on this great song. when the anthem was originally created, to die for the country was what was heroic to do. i believe JOEY AYALA hit it in the eye when he suggests that to be nationalist now means to be positive in all things that matter, citing OFWs' love for country and family drive our kababayans to find better luck overseas, thus the phrase "ang magmahal ng dahil sa iyo"... There's the bigger possibility, JOEY AYALA's genius shall again be underplayed, unfortunately, by the people in the NCCA for the simple reason that some "nationalists" tend to be really rigid on their rules. Nonetheless, i want to believe that i am among the many who RESPECT AYALA's love for the country and his musical prowess.... i mind though that the audience did not stand while the anthem was sung.... however, i might not have stood up myself if i was in the audience... given the circumstance, i might have forgotten to do so because of awe to what was transpiring onstage.... simply GREAT!!!

I hope someone should petition to Supreme Court that Republic Act No. 8491 is unconstitutional. Art. III, Sec. 4 of the Constitution states that no law shall be passed abridging the freedom of expression and, clearly, RA 8491 curtails our freedom in expressing our patriotism through our own rendition of the national anthem. By singing our own version of National Anthem does not mean that we are disrespecting the history or the people who fought for the country.

I think his rendition of the National Anthem was an "eye opener" for all of us Filipinos. We sing the National Anthem not knowing its context, its meaning. We tend to ignore these small details because many of us do not know it. That is also one reason why majority tend to suddenly skip a verse, skip a part of the anthem. I definitely agree with him, change the melody, correct the pronunciation. Ending the song with a positive vibe is also a good idea, but then the context of to live and die for the country would then be changed. I BEG TO DISAGREE, SIR JOEY AYALA I would just like to say that being a big fan of Joey Ayala, I have the utmost respect for him as an artist in particular. His songs depict realism and that is something quite amiss in the music scene today. I miss his music badly. But having said this, I would like to disagree with his critique of the national anthem in this video. First and foremost, I feel that he didn't consider the historical context of the song. His saying that "nang mamatay ng dahil sa'yo" sends out negativity is totally taking it out of context. It was written during the height of patriotism in the country. They, our forefathers who fought for our freedom, were truly willing to die for "Bayang Magiliw, Perlas ng Silanganan". Secondly, he was making fun of how some words were pronounced wrongly when the anthem is being sung. Frankly, the wrong pronunciation of "sa dagat at bundok", "may dilag ang tula" and the like should not be blamed on the writers. It's not their fault; it's the people who wrongly sing it. The lyrics were derived from a Spanish poem entitled "Filipinas" and was written by Jose Palma a year later after Julian Felipe wrote the music. It's first translations were in English and was only translated to Filipino during the Japanese occupation. The final version that we are using now was translated by Felipe Padilla De Leon during the term of Ramon Magsaysay with a few revisions in the 1960s. It may be true that some words from the original poem may have been lost in translation, but definitely the people who worked on this knew what they were doing. So there is no need to change how the words are pronounced and accented in the song because they were originally correct in the first place. The actual mistake of people is in singing the lyrics in legato (in a manner that is smooth and connected) as opposed to staccato (in a manner that is halting and disconnected) which is the quality used in marching songs. More so, he can not say that making the song a march was a wrong choice. First of all, Julian Felipe, who wrote the musical piece as "Marcha Filipino Magdalo" (1898), wrote it specifically for the proclamation of Philippine Independence as per requested by Aguinaldo who wanted it to be a march. Coming from a supposed "victory", a march was more appropriate for it signified militance and high spirits. A "kundiman" anthem, as what is being suggested here, would've been dull and lethargic, not right for such an occasion. Trying to critique the National Anthem today, as if it was written for this generation in mind, is totally uncalled for. However intellectual this attempt may sound, I don't think that it is being done in good taste. More so, the fact that he was discussing this to an audience comprising mostly of the youth is quite reckless, for he may be sending the wrong message to the young generation who may one day be the leaders of our nation. Although a message of love and positivity is being sent by changing "ang mamatay ng dahil sa'yo" to "ang magmahal ng dahil sa'yo", it is not appropriate because it is not what the writer intended to say. "Lupang Hinirang" is an anthem of patriotism composed precisely for those who were willing to die to achieve freedom for our country. There's nothing wrong with LOVING FOR OUR COUNTRY, but that was not the purpose when this song was written. If we want to write about LOVING FOR OUR COUNTRY, then by all means let us do so. But let us not change the context of one that had been written by someone else to fit our own belief.

I agree with what this person has done....The fact that the way we sing our national anthem seems like we're marching to death...Life today is not the same during world war 1 & 2 and during Spanish times. Maybe we should move on in life and look forward to a brighter and calmer future. I also believe that our current way of singing this song and also some parts of the lyrics have some psychological effect on us especially to young Filipinos. Singing a song in a harsh way as if looking for vengeance is not good in my opinion. So in my personal opinion, give this man a cookie and let him change the way Filipinos sing our national anthem.

Republic Act No. 8491 treats national symbols as holy relics that are inviolable. Among its provisions, it specifies that Lupang Hinirang should be played in accordance with the musical arrangement and composition of Julian Felipe. Never mind that the said original composition was for a piano or for a brass band, and that it was written in 2/4 time signature. The consequence of breaking this law is a fine and/or a prison sentence. This only shows us that laws like this were actually made to indoctrinate us, to keep us from thinking outside what the government wants us to think and how the government wants us to think. In this video, Joey Ayala does something subversive. He rearranges the Philippine National Anthem to the time signature of a kundiman, the traditional Filipino love song. He even changes a word. What he does in the video is illegal. But it also shows us a picture of a patriot as a thinking, feeling man.

Though our constitution is strict on matters regarding our national anthem. I believe there is nothing bad with Mr. Joey Ayala's way of singing "Lupang Hinirang". NICE .. but Joey knows very well why and how the national anthem came about. It was a time of high revolutionary fervour against Spain and soon the US, who was then beginning to spread its imperialist wings. In that climate, a MARCH for an anthem was most appropriate and "ang mamatay ng dahil sa you" was a call for the ultimate sacrifice for love of country. We sing the national anthem to honour and respect those who toiled hard and those who gave their lives to achieve "freedom". It may not seem appropriate now, but to trifle with it may be disrespectful not only to the composer but especially to those who unselfishly sacrificed during the revolutionary wars waged by the Filipinos against the Spanish and the Americans, but also the thousands who fought wars for freedom against the Japanese and the North Koreans. Let us sing it the way it was always sung, with revolutionary fervour in order to honour and respect our known and unknown heroes.

It was written with the deepest meaning and it proclaims solidarity and the love for country that they gave their lives to so that the young Filipinos would have freedom and a bright future. Perfect. The Lupang Hinirang is not just any song and shouldn't be sang the way only Regine Velasquez (no offense to Mrs.Alcasid, she's great!) can do. It's a song written for the love of our country and for being proud of our nationality. I liked the way he sang it, but the original version is still way better. It might be good to sing his kundiman version if it is always accompanied by a guitar. But in reality, we always sing it acapella during flag ceremonies or other events our national anthem needs to be sung.

Perhaps the notion of dying in the last verse is better understood in the context of the second to last verse, in that we are willing to do something so horrible (and do it happily) because (a) oppressors are around us, and (b) we are doing it for the country. In fact, the concept of love is already reflected in the previous verses ("lupa ng araw..." denotes that we live in a country of light/passion, glory and love, and (because of that?) we are happy to be with Mother Philippines). Mr. Ayala's version is inspiring, but it also proves that updating a song (let alone a national anthem) involves more than changing one word. Perhaps a reread is best for the anthem.

For me, the last line na " Ang mamatay ng dahil sayo" can mean two things, this just how I interpret the last line. I don't know what the writter originally intended to convey but for me this is what he was saying. It can mean that handa tayong ibigay ang lahat pati ang ating sariling buhay para sa ating lupang sinilangan, ang pilipinas. And what I mean by "buhay" is hindi lang literal na buhay kundi yung ating life style we can change our life style para sa interest ng buong pilipinas. By changing the bad practices. And the second interpretation is for the people who are willing to sell our independence, our very own country in exchange for their own interest. Originally, the lyrics was in Spanish since it was from a Spanish poem 'Filipinas' by Jose Palma. Only it was officially translated into the current Filipino version back in 1950's (though it was translated several times in the 30's and 40's). Heck, it was even revised in the 1960's. Ambeth Ocampo had already noted that in our current translation of the original lyrics have some parts that are lost in translation. Even the original beat was changed (from 2/4 to 4/4) since if we follow the original composition, we can't sing it. I don't think Joey Ayala meant to diminish the importance of the last line. I think what he meant was that, we have been singing the national anthem repeatedly for more than a thousand times, but we tend to neglect the full meaning of it. At least he was able to put a new spin on the anthem, despite knowing a lot of people would crucify him for doing it...publicly.

JOEY AYALA's act of revising the song is good because hes style makes a true Filipino to sing the National Anthem in no mediocre manner. Because some of us sang our anthem very fast that we especially the children cant barely understand what the song is all about . But if we're going to argue the difference with the line "Ang Mamatay" (the original line) at "Ang Magmahal"(by JOEY AYALA) ng dahil sa'yo, for me it makes no sense because both of the lyrics has the same and has a good thought. This song is about love of country (lupang hinirang), the country's love for its people ( bayang magiliw), love of independence (paglayang minamahal), victory in war (kislap ng watawat mo'y tagumpay na nagniningning), unceasing yearning for freedom ( araw niya... di magdidilim), the joyful willingness to fight (aming ligaya...) the oppressor and crushers of our dreams (pag may mang-aapi) because the Filipino is brave (duyan ka ng magiting). c.
