After undergoing a major brain injury as a teen, Jason Bridges was challenged by a diminished IQ. However, he discovered the value of emotional intelligence and how this “EQ” could be used to excel in the world around him. Jason teaches how you too can grow your EQ and how it can improve your life!
Jason Bridges is a 1998 alumnus of Wabash College and previously gave a Chapel Talk titled, "Please, Please Lower Your GPA." He is currently the CEO of both Nantucket Bike Tours, and Handlebar Cafe located on the Nantucket Island, MA, and offers Bike Tour internships to Wabash students focused on improving Emotional Intelligence skills. Jason also is the Public Outreach Manager responsible for improving community engagement and digital resources for the Town of Nantucket.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Forcing closeness and friendliness on people can be just as uncomfortable as ignoring them entirely. An emotionally intelligent person isn't brazen enough to shake the hand of everyone they meet or ask for the name of the stranger that looks uncomfortable to give it or in a hurry, because there's no catch-all way to deal with every person. You need to evaluate each person differently and not try to just push intimacy on everyone by trying to forcefully make them open up to you because it can be uncomfortable to them. Being willing to listen but not being forceful is important. It's a case by case balance.

I can't agree more, awareness of those around you (social awareness) is very important...knowing when to back off or not engage at all proves to be just as challenging as the opposite. Thank you for your comments! -Jason

Agree. Freak in anything is ..well freakish. May be more important advice and daily challenge would be to make people you know (starting with family) smile and help make them feel good about themselves....

One of the best I have seen on youtube on this subject! Coming from a man who not really smile that much. Not smiling to strangers, or when I am outside the house. Need to practice.

I love how his approach to business is both practical and ... not ethical, but I want to say philanthropic? Almost more the second one, where he cares just as much if not more about passing on spiritual benefits/character development to those around him. Listen at 9:50, he almost dismisses "sales" as an end goal. If only every business leader offered this kind of value, then we'd be truly rich. Very impressive/inspiring. Takeaway, lol, bini, got it.

Much appreciation for your thoughts! You figured me out, haha. Sales + profit are def important no doubt, gotta keep the lights on and the investors happy (if you have investors). I spend more time thinking about how my staff connects with each other and our customers. The logistics of how to make coffee, advertising, and paying your bills is the easy part if you are disciplined and dedicated. Making the world or your community a better place should be the lens we look through when running a business. Thx again for your comment!

What i have learned in life the hard way i hate to admit is people are the way to success the better you know, understand, how, what and why about people every single relationship you have in life will be better your family, your spouse, your children, every thing in life will be better if you understand people and the most important person to understand is you and the rest of the world will become opened to you it will be different like an epiphany

Should emotional intelligence be used as a way to make money? It seems like everything in the United States is aimed towards money and making a living. I'm not a super empathetic person or anything, but I've learned not to hurt others. I've also seen that people's lives have actually increased in terms of being busy since concepts like emotional intelligence and mindfulness have been incorporated into the business culture. This makes peoples lives more difficult with increased competition. I wonder if these types of things are used for the wrong reasons sometimes. Then again I'm not the most knowledgeable of people. I spend a lot of time alone. Most of what I learn is through watching videos and reading articles.

@ZachRachedi
@ZachRachedi 4 жыл бұрын
It's never too late to develop good social skills, it's scientifically proven that the parts of our brains responsible for emotional intelligence are flexible and can grow. I'm on the same path as you although much younger, I believe we can do it and being aware of it is the first step to change. Now keep reading and learning about EQ and emotional maturity, but most of all practice it with everyone around you. Best of luck!

The problem with emotional intelligence: Please, use your emotional intelligence to make this person who's had nothing, never going to have nothing, and been told his/her feelings don't matter to make them feel better. Please, give them a little fake pep talk and go on with your business and back to letting them not matter so more. At least they don't want to harm us right, and maybe they'll vote for us. Short-sighted, selfish nonsense. This is not a happy place, and there's no happy ending. Call to God. Taking Him out of the picture didn't solve anything, it just made the problem worse.
