In his talk, Justin will be reflecting on bridging the gap between the job you want and where you are now, reflecting on his own career journey. Justin McElroy is is a three-time #1 New York Times best-selling author of The Adventure Zone graphic novels and co-host of the podcast on which it's based. He also hosts podcasts like My Brother, My Brother and Me (the basis for a recent TV adaptation by NBCUniversal) and Sawbones (adapted into a New York Times bestselling book in 2018). His voice acting has appeared in the recent film Trolls World Tour and animated series like OK KO!, Apple and Onion and Slug Riot. He's currently working on a podcasting how-to book, Everybody Has A Podcast (Except You) due out in January 2021 from Harper Collins. I watched Justin's lecture on this a while back and it's honestly such an important value. We move away from our hometown because there's not enough of a creative culture there and in doing so shirk any responsibility for putting in the work to create that culture for others.

It’s a complicated issue tackling personal gain vs giving back to one’s community, especially being a creative/in a less stable career where you’ll do anything for that little bit of stability or job assurance

As an aspiring writer in Minnesota, this is something I needed to hear. There is definitely some opportunity near me (Minneapolis has a lot of theater as well as a pretty large arts scene in general), but it's not anywhere near as much as it would be if I were in New York or LA. People around here still laugh when I tell them I want to work as a creative. So it's good to hear these kinds of encouraging words.

This is honestly what I needed to hear. As a writer in Canada when so many jobs are in Toronto, where the logistics of living there are so threatening, I appreciate nothing more than the idea that I can create art and value where I am. I can make myself important where I am. I want to create a community where local artists can be supported, and this gave me the bravery to start. Thank you Juice.

I never considered that the town I grew up in would be losing a creative person if I were to do that. last night i was having a panic attack as i tried to fall asleep bc i was thinking about how i've failed at everything i wanted to do as a kid because i never moved away from my hometown (well, i did move to the metropolitan area 45 min away but that barely counts), and.. i really needed this honestly. thanks, juice

There is an amazing next step to this that is incredibly valuable. If enough people in your community can stay doing the job they want remotely, simultaneously helping to retain your community and culture, that'll build the tax base so your town has more money, but it will also make your community more attractive to kids who would otherwise leave for the big city. More of them will stay and build businesses in town, making your community more attractive, which will retain more kids to build more businesses and so on and so forth. Rural America could stop bleeding out, suburbs with no culture would slow their expansion around metro areas, cities would stop growing faster than infrastructure and culture can adjust. If we can build community in the places we live instead of chasing someone else's culture somewhere else, we can fix a lot of problems in our communities, both in cities and towns. P.S. If you're so inclined, I recommend reading "Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging" "Rise of the Creative Class" "How to Kill a City" "Alienated America" "Prosperity without Growth"

I think he didn’t wanna brag, but he should’ve mentioned the money he and his family have brought to Huntington. Every Christmas, the MBMBAM Angels help pay for necessities for families in need. Any time they mention a single thing about Huntington residents needing X or Y, us fans are running to our wallets because of the clear love for their hometown and to help repay the wholesome joy they bring us. I’m not rich, but I’m willing to spend disposable income for them.
