Actually, only 4.8% of the population of planet Earth speaks English natively. And that percentage is steadily falling. Mostly due to the rapid population increase of non-native English speakers. Esperanto is WAY EASIER to learn than English. I love Esperanto. It's helping me to learn German and Polish.

What about much of Europe where in many countries you are taught ESL since grade school and heard it spoken even before you are school age. Then you have Ireland and the UK which are clearly English speakers. Sweden....just try to speak broken Swede there and they will flip to English to make it easier for you. You will find that same thing in many countries around the EU. India has many millions of English speakers, and no a heavy accent doesn't mean someone isn't a fluent speaker. Australia, New Zealand, parts of Africa, Canada, all over Central and South America you have multi-language speakers some of which are fluent in English. Then you have the rest of Asia.

Native language I loved listening to this. It Pretty well encapsulates why I learned Esperanto. To one of the comments above, the number actually currently stands at 6% native English speakers. A native speaker isn’t just another way to say that someone is fluent in a language. But rather, that the language was acquired as a child, before the age of 12. There is some debate on that age range depending on the linguistic paradigm you’re using. No one in the comments ever said that people do not learn fluent English as a second language. It is totally doable, people do it all the time, as the comment mentions. But aside from that, there’s a lot of beauty and learning another language, even when you don’t have to because other people in the world speak English too LOL! That’s really not the point anyone was trying to make. I personally wish I had studied Esperanto before trying to learn Spanish, I am absolutely certain it would’ve been much easier. Esperanto is a wonderful sandbox that you get to play with an experiment with, With a very regular rules… At the same time it can get very complex and it allows learners to figure out what it’s actually like to learn a language. Testo different methodologies, encounter different psychological Roblox and how to work with them, you’ll learn a lot about yourself. If you’re already learning a language, keep it up! If you’ve considered learning a language but find it far too intimidating (but you still find it interesting) me maybe starting with Esperanto would be a good idea. Whatever you do, happy learning!

I have loved Esperanto since I first found a description in a scouting book,for gaining the linguist's badge. The study of Esperanto is enduring,and I am constantly intrigued by the hidden shades of the grammar. Although the language itself can be quite quickly learned,that is only a first step into learning the complexities of the grammar and syntax. For me this has been a lifelong study. A great feature of Esperanto is the ease with which you can meet people as you travel. I used it all over Eastern Europe. Thanks to their Jarlibro (Yearbook) I was able to find a Buddhist monk/teacher in Sri Lanka while I was living in pre-internet Iowa. I have sister puppet companies in the Baltic states thanks to contact via Esperanto.

I actually would not describe Esperanto as multiculturalist. I'd describe it as more interculturalist. There is a subtle difference between these. Multiculturalism does not necessarily envision a common language: in that respect, it can lead to a tower of Babel and confict between cultures. Interculturalism does promote a common culture, even if only an auxiliary one, that everyone learns as a common second culture to allow the development of intercultural relations. We can even take Warsaw of Zamenhof's time as an example. He witnessed multiculturalism first hand, with four different language groups many of whom were not able to communicate with one another. This motivated him to create Esperanto to promote more just and fraternal relations between them. In other words, he created Esperanto so as to advance multiculturalism towards interculturalism. And just a point about Esperanto being an artificial language. Esperanto is an artificial language just as English is an artificial language. IN fact, the word artificial is redundant since by definition, a language, any language, is artificial. That said, we can perhaps distinguish along a spectrum of planning and say that, relatively speaking, Esperanto figures among the more planned languages and English among the more ad hoc ones with regards to the regularity of their respective orthographies, grammars, and lexicons.

Up to 4.8% are native speakers of some 50 English dialects. Majority of up to 12.8% are speakers of International English, which is harder to understand for Native speakers. I've already started avoiding noise articles (a/an & the, whenever possible, didn't use in this paragraph) - my contribution to IE (Globish). Esperanto IS NOT any kind of mix. Such statements just push people away from learning it, cause one starts to think that it's just a kinda klingon or elfish joke for nerds, where it's not! Esperanto is unique, solid, live and very expressive communication tool, potentially better than any other! Although most of its vocabulary was taken from Latin and some other languages, it totally differences from all of them and Latin itself. Its grammar structure is so elegant, logic and genius. Even if there weren't other Esperantists and tons of books, it would be worth to learn Esperanto only for its elegance itself.

@@NikonKanava It depends on how you want to learn. Duolingo probably is great if you have a smartfone and commute every day, but not very suited if you want to advance quickly. For that you need a good teacher. If you are lucky you can go to several weekend-courses. Places like Gresillon and Herzberg offer courses that last one, two or even three weeks. One week already gives you a solid foundation to build upon

Esperanto rises and falls at various times through its history. Many people have suffered and died championing this incredible language,the Zamenhof family being almost wiped out by the Nazis,due to their promotion of world peace. But the language arises time and again,like the Phoenix from its ashes,bringing hope and belief for a united world. The unsettled situation today could well create a new interest in the language,with more people becoming involved in the possibilities inherent in Esperanto,and more likely,captivated by the sheer ingenuity of its construction. You never really finish learning Esperanto,because there are endless avenues you can explore,discovering new aspects in its grammatical construction,and the way subtle meanings can be made by a simple addition of a suffix. If you want a really interesting hobby which can be shared with people all over the world,and at minimal cost,then I recommend you try your hand at learning and mastering this extraordinary language. I’d like to raise one thought problem, consider the Deaf community in this world of lingual accessibility. Where do they fall in? I have studied American Sign Language for the last 5 years and there is an international version, but it is rarely used. Would everyone need to learn that as well? I’d think so, for the vision of unity and full inclusion. I am all for Esperanto, I am beginning my journey now to becoming an Esperantist. Just wanted to propose that question.

Yeah, but there is the other conclusion that many people draw from the word 'articicial.' And that is 'unnatural.' If the language was set free and grown wildly through the democracy of kongresoj, the unnatural moniker is not fitting. Constructed language (conlang) has a much more exacting quality to its term.

Another advantage of learning Esperanto for grade school children, this is especially true for English speaking children, is that it permits them to look at their own language objectively. English is so irregular in its spelling not to mention homonyms and homophones that it is very confusing to children who are native speakers. Esperanto being so regular and phonetic allow a child to look at their language with different eyes.

For god's sake Learn it. Do yourself and especially your children and the coming generation a favor. So much money and time is being wasted all over the world because of not using Esperanto. So much great resources out there can not be used because of this. Many talented people out there don't have access to education in a language they understand. Many don't learn new languages (and they should) because of failure. Esperanto can fix qll of this qnd more. I'm Kurdish living in Iran in a half Azerbaijani city. I learned Azerbaijani and Persian of course. Then jumped to Arabic (not very successful) and then English. It took me two years and I wouldn't consider myself fluent. Do people all over the world a favor and learn it. I assure you it will be easy and fun

IN 2O13 I COMPLETED A POSTAL CORRESPONDENCE COURSE OF TEN LESSONS IN ESPERANTO, OUT OF EL CERRITO , CALIFORNIA. MY TUTOR WAS ELLEN EDDY. I THOUGHT ABOUT TRYING TO START AN ESPERANTO GROUP HERE , IN OSCODA , MICHIGAN BUT I COULD NOT ACQUIRE A REALLY GOOD COMPREHENSIVE TWO WAY ENGLISH-- ESPERANTO DICTIONARY SO I FIGURED THAT OUR GROUP WOULD HAVE BEEN LIMITED JUST TOO MUCH WITHOUT ONE.

IF I WERE ABLE TO START UP AN ESPERANTO GROUP IN OSCODA, MICHIGAN , IT WOULD BE WRITING AND SPEAKING VERY LIMITED ESPERANTO. one of the biggest problems of Esperanto today: there's too much content about it, and not enough content in Esperanto. Also, that old-school aesthethic used by the speakers in videos and books is not very inviting for the young genetarions... Instead of translating 19th century books, translate manga, series, animes, movies, (even p0rn, for god's sake!!) that people actually like nowadays! Record high quality gameplays, do streams and pop music. Otherwise Esperanto will never stop being that weird boomer thing only old people are interested about.

Yeah Luke Amadeus that runs the Polymathy and ScorpioMartianus KZbin channels does content related to modern-day stuff in Latin as a way to teach it and to have content that people can use to immerse themselves in Latin. I think the same should be done for Esperanto.

There are very few jobs that require knowledge of Esperanto, but knowing it helps you learn other languages better and faster, and sometimes having it on your curriculum vitae ( "resumé") will make you stand out

The problem is not language it is culture and the main problem we have today is that the powers that be are trying to wipe out all the old cultures under the name of multiculturalism which is anything but that. I love Esperanto as a language but it's goal of bringing the world together is just a dream. Humans will always be different from one another. Even when we speak the same language and even share similar cultures we will fight each other. It is human nature and always will be. That being said we should still learn Esperanto if for no other reason than to have a language that actually makes sense.

I speak Esperanto fluently, you can watch my videos on KZbin. I learn Esperanto and then learn English more easily. My mother tongue is Spanish.

I agree with all her points except one minor issue. All the universal languages of their day, Greek, Latin, Arabic, French, and now English (and in the future Chinese?) will have their day in the light based on the economic success of that language's origin. They all have one thing in common, and that is that they're all rooted in an ethnic or cultural origin which isn't universal. Language is a very fundamental aspect of culture. So if a language is going to be universal it has to feel representative and rooted in, if not all, at least the majority of cultures. And that's the biggest issue with the adoption of Esperanto of the "Universal Language". It's a language created by one man, and completely based on the Latin and European language family; which Chinese, Africans, Arabs etc cannot relate to or identify with. Hence not truly universal language. She brought up the issue that there are only 10% native English speakers. Esperanto increases that percentage only incrementally. You could argue it's at least better, but not that it's anywhere near universal.

The Chinese, Africans, Arabs, etc, have the same opportunity to embrace EO as their bridge language & contribute to the universal character. The other choice is currently English, which is in opposite direction (no excuse here). By construct, EO is already universal, as the grammar is flexible enough to be non-European. The words are already international, & anybody can contribute with any missing expressions.

This is theoretically true, but it is false in practise. i have spoken Esperanto to hundreds of Chinese, Japanese and Arabs, and they speak the language fluently and effortlessly. It actually has a lot of non-Indo-European features, and a lot in common with Mandarin Chinese. You can find theses features if you look for them. Just Google "Claude Piron: articles".

In addition - the whole point of Esperanto is to have a language with no "nationality" in order for communication to be on equal terms, ie, everybody being non-native speakers.

@Shahrooz, you are missing one crucial point. Esperanto is based on something universal : logic - same for all people. The aspect of Esperanto may seem european to you (and many) by the aspect of the words. But much, much more important, is what underlies, i.e. logic in grammar.

I agree that there never will be a language that is universal in the sense that all human thoughts and feelings can be expressed precisely in it. I also see it as a bit of problem that Esperantists - and especially the non-europeans - are too modest to introduce words for things that can't be expressed well yet, or too hesitant to use words that haven't been made official yet.

Three reasons why I stopped learning Eo: 1. It doesn't roll off my tongue naturally like "kiujn." 2. Zealots. 3. Media I'm not dissing Eo. I'm just sharing my experience.
