That fact that you are reading Goodbye Eri before Fire Punch should make for a very interesting dynamic as you read them back-to-back. Just due to their release dates, most people would have read Fire Punch first. I can't go into any details, but I think you'll be able to appreciate how Fujimoto has changed while keeping a few core things intact about his way of storytelling.

A little context for fujimoto's works is that fujimoto is a little obsessed over movies and he loves to inject his love of film into his manga. Fujimoto is currently my favorite newish mangaka, i love his approach towards paneling(more so in fp and csm) and drawing characters.He has a very interesting approach to storytelling as you'll come to see in the coming weeks. Also i think the movie eri shows yuta is "fight club"

I think his paneling in Eri is incredible in its own right. The way he utilises 4-koma panel structure, traditionally used in fast paced, slice of life stories, for a slow-paced, cinematographic effect is amazing. It really sells the idea that the entire manga could be a movie, both in universe and out.

@@sunrayyourmom oh don't get me wrong his paneling in goodbye eri is very inventive and fun, im just saying his paneling is much more pronounced in his other works especially csm.

One thing I would like to say about suicide. As someone who had a little brother who was hospitalized over a suicide attempt due to chronic health issues he was diagnosed with I can say that getting mad at someone that is suicidal and calling them stupid and all that stuff is not the correct answer. While I completely understand that point of view as I lived it being the person that got mad about it and though it was stupidest thing someone could ever do. I learned all that does is just reinforce the suicidal thoughts. A lot of people cannot adjust their perspective to understand the perspective of a suicidal person for obvious reasons. A lot of suicidal people genuinely think the world and their loved ones would be better off with out them. As much as people like to frame suicide as being the most selfish thing a person can do and from their perspective they are correct but from a suicidal persons perspective its the opposite. They believe their existence is the cause of their loved ones suffering and misery and it doesn't matter if that is the truth or not because that is how they genuinely feel about it. What they need is help ideally professional help but any help is better then nothing and certainly better then bashing on them when they are already at the edge and not thinking clearly.

i think Tee was bashing the general concept/idea of suicide , surely faced with a real person who is suicidal he would probably be more compassionate and careful around the topic

The case in Goodbye Eri is also very different to what you are describing here. Yuta is actively trying to bring harm and trauma to others by the means of his suicide, not relieve anyone of their pain as he perceives it. His intention is selfish in all senses of this word. He is hurt and is looking to hurt others. I don't know how he would react to a response similar to the one expressed by Tee but we're definitely having a different case here.
@kylesmith987
@kylesmith987 Жыл бұрын
@@coughme I would argue yes and no. There is obviously many different reasons someone may be a mental state that they believe suicide is the answer. I want to clarify that I am basing this opinion on just what was presented soo far in the story as I have not read the entire manga and I am going to read it now after seeing this. I am also not a professional by any means so I could definitely be off the mark here. First of all I think the way he is acting out is a bit of a foil for his unresolved trauma with his mother. I view it as him hating himself for running away. The thing that is pushing him over the edge is everyone bashing on him for the movie he made in poor taste because no truly understands what he is going through, not even himself to an extent. I think he is trying to justify it to himself in some weird twisted way by lashing out at everyone that hurt him. But to me it just feels like all they did was pile onto the existing trauma that is already there. Generally speaking someone that is on the verge of suicide has a deep hatred for themselves. While that trauma/hatred may stem from many different places and many different reasons bashing on someone that is already in a suicidal mental state isn't going to help figure out how to like themselves or help them figure out their unresolved traumas.

@@coughme When you want to 100% harm people you do shit like school shooting or something, you don't ramble about how killing yourself will make them suffer, that's just a huge cope for the fact that you just want to end your suffering.

8:50 I've thought about this a little myself because my mom does similar stuff lol. I think this might be a false dichotomy. You can both experience and capture the experience. There are definitely ways of trying to capture the experience that detracts from actually experiencing the thing (mom obsessively taking pictures), but there are ways of doing so that's probably ok. I don't see much harm in taking a few seconds to take a few pictures here and there. Though, it also probably depends on what you are experiencing.
@HerissonThe

Yes agreed, also from the mom's point of view she is probably trying to capture a memory of being with her son as much as she is trying to get a picture of the waterfall. In addition when a lot time passes as tee mentionned memories become blurry but seeing a picture/hearing a song/smelling something familiar can bring all of it back. It's like listening to an old anime opening you haven't heard in years and being instantly reminded of a distinct feeling you had when you first heard it.

I think there is worth noting the composition and overall the paneling coz there really isn’t anything like it in manga, even chainsaw man or his other works. It’s just so captivating and unique. The camera is very live actiony which I don’t think I often or even ever see it in other manga. So creative in every front, really utilizes the medium so well

Love Fujimoto and his uniquely weird to approach to stories, including the strong film influence. Love to see such an honest yet shamelessly bizarre artist have such success lately and I hope he goes to do even more in the future, can see him being one of the all time greats in the industry. Also hope CSM wins the anime poll as well since that is what really brought him to a bigger crowd (and probably his most accessible story without losing any of the chaotic charm)

The sudden jump to suicide makes it the impulsive variety which needs little justification, just unresolved hurt as fuel. You don't need any previous conscious thoughts of it either. He got interrupted, but the actual chance of a jump from this variety isn't great, impulse adrenaline is short lived and only rarely does it win out against fear. It is usually the start of a long term suicidal ideation however. You never get to ignore having made those first steps to an attempt. It may even be stored as an overall positive stress relieving experience. Suicide the action and suicide the idea don't have that much overlap either, the idea is an attractive and dramatic escapism. It is the ultimate tantrum. No more of this, no more of that. At its heart it is the desire to put everything on pause, turn it off, take a break. The sort of break we often aren't afforded. This kid needs a break. He needs time.

Agreed. I've had exactly 9 people close to me become victims of suicide and another 3 survive the attempt. Hearing someone address people directly with "sorry to any people who may be suicidal in chat" and then go on to say it would be better if they were slaves so at least they'd be of some use is beyond abhorrent. Suicidal people are not objects to be used and discarded at the leisure of the non-suicidal and they are not idiots who deserve more suffering than what they have clearly gone through to reach the point of being suicidal. Even if this was just an unfortunate miswording on his end and this was actually purely talking about Yuta and the point that he is doing it to hurt others only really ever so slightly lessens the disgusting nature of this statement. If he wants to think suicide isn't right or be frustrated/mad at those who reached that point that's his perogative but to reduce them or even Yuta down to objects whose only use is to serve others until they starve is just disgusting. People who have died from suicide are not idiots who would have been better off as slaves or starving street sweepers and they are worth more than what he is reducing them to, my friends and family who have died from suicide matter and tons of people still care about them myself included even if many of us are/were upset with them for doing that, that doesn't mean they are these pathetic idiotic trash that he is describing. That whole rant was infuriating and I can't see myself continuing to support someone who would treat those clearly suffering immensely with such disdain.

This reaction started out okay, if a little pretentious, but then it descended rapidly in the middle with the whole “you HAVE to experience people dying” vibe before ending on a “suffering suicidal people should just go work themselves to death” rant which was uh… it sure was something. Not trying to be a hater or anything just felt like typing out my thoughts about this video because it was a TRIP.

I don't remember when was the last time I felt so disconnected to another human's emotional response to something. This is such an interesting feeling! I hope you go more in depth into this later in the video. Back to watching! Edit: And you just did as soon as I unpaused. I get your point of view now.

Yeah, honestly I was kinda surprised at Tee's limited perspective here. I get where he's coming from of course but when I was reading at that part all I could think it was how fucked up it was of Yuta's mother to ask him to do something like that. Being with his dying mother at her last monets is one thing but filming her? That's a whole another thing!
@KasaiKouhai
@KasaiKouhai Жыл бұрын
You guys know why he’s deeply traumatized and disconnected from this event? Because he didn’t live it HE WAS TOO BUSY FILMING TO ACTUALLY LOOK AT HIS MOTHER I agree with tee about not taking videos or pictures of events. I honestly can’t say how many of my memories have been overwritten by pictures and photos. Many of my happiest moments aren’t memories anymore, they’re just false memories extrapolated from pictures or videos taken of that event. So I wholeheartedly understand, he didn’t spend the last few months of his mother’s life with her, he’s seeing those moments through a screen. A fundamentally different experience.

Seeing my own mom on videos or in pictures rekindles my memory... but most of those are her not posing in any way. Videos of random conversation; Pictures of her doing something not related to the camera. They show the event more than her. But, recordings ALWAYS SOUND wrong. I hear myself on a video and it is not me. Same with everyone. So I know if I ever met you your voice would be significantly different. But that's not a negative but an additive. I could experience a thing in more than one medium; allowing differing thoughts to exist over the same event. then again I like experiencing every POV possible.

Some people just can't make themselves go it feels bad to not go just watching someone waste away eats at you and some people just can't bear seeing it i wasn't able to be there for my grandpa when he was dying because of my job. He didn't remember me at all the last time i was there i was just my dad it was killing me over and over again that he lost that part of himself and that he wouldn't remember that i told him my goodbye. You have a demanding view on how people should act and its just not how people are
@kodytiffany5686
@kodytiffany5686 Жыл бұрын
Have you never suffered memory issues with important events? Because I think you missed the point of the pictures your mom was trying to take. Permanence can be preferable if your memory sucks. I cannot remember my Grandpas face or his voice; I cannot replicate his humor or tell his good story like he could. But when I see a picture I can remember those things even if just for a bit. I loved him, and miss him much... clearly that means I cared about those moments. But that's not how my brain works. If its not a story like anime or a book or a project I am working on then my memory is laughable but not humorous. To be fair I do not get truly what fidelity is. I have looked up the word but I did not really get the meaning well enough for the explanation to stick. Loyalty I think is what it means so do correct me if wrong. I get your point as well. Live in those moments and worry about the other stuff later. I remember a few waterfalls and they do capture your heart in there awe and splendor. There was a spot in the Blue mts we went camping as a kid and it had a cliff that was a pure vibe as it overlooked a view of miles of grass fields spread between WA; OR; ID at a corner of WA that touches the other 2. Super serene despite the many close calls I had in the area with wolves or Grizzlies. Those memories mean a lot but I also would not get frustrated at someone wanting to take a picture. I just do feel the same about cheapining... to me its N/A as an issue. It only hurts them if it hurts anyone and its their choice if they want to. I will remember equally well whether or not they take my picture in those moments. But I do think people need to drop the camera long enough to soak it n first. Experience the moment.

i don't think telling a suicidal person how 'lame' it is to want to do it is the correct way to go about it. saying that won't change a thing. as someone who struggles with mental health, trust me, we KNOW. we know it's lame and selfish and all the other things people say it is, but someone who is suicidal just wants the pain to end. one one actually wants to die. they just want the pain to end. and trying to blame that person for feeling that way (something they cannot really help), will only result in that person going through with the whole thing, it will not help in any way, let alone stop them. i did not want to be that person, but whatever you said around the 46 min mark is very, VERY hurtful. im not even joking here.
