A token gesture seeing as that album was undeniably their worst... And I'm a huge Dream Theater fan.
@exscape Жыл бұрын
@@Ian-zj1bu I don't know about "undeniably". Others rate the albums rather differently than you do, apparently. The following albums have a lower average rating on rateyourmusic: BC&SL, Distance over Time, Falling Into Infinity, Systematic Chaos, A Dramatic Turn of Events, When Dream and Day Unite, Dream Theater, The Astonishing. I don't personally agree with that FWIW, but I also certainly don't agree it's their worst album.

Hi! Nice reaction! Please react to more Dream Theater! :) And don't be scared about their long songs, thoses are their bests!! Here some suggestions -Illumination Theory -Count of Tuscany -Octavarium -In the Presence of Enemies part 1+2 (This is really 1 song splited into 2 parts for opening/closing the album) -Breaking All Illusions -Metropolis part 1 -Metropolis part 2 (full album, maybe not for a reaction video though, but this album CHANGED my perception of music for ever, it's an amazing experience mixing aswesome instrumental and intruiging story) Nothing impress me more than Dream Theater playing live, i hope your journey continue!

James Labrie ruptured his vocal chords due to a bout with food poisoning. His voice was much better before that IMO. Every instrumentalist in the band is among the best.

Seriously?? I remembered reading about him getting food poisoning but I had know idea! I’ve seen them 4 times after that period and I assumed John after writing ‘The Astonishing’ helped wear James’s voice down… but maybe it’s been a little bit of everything!🫤 I agree with you, his vocal’s were better, I still love listening to Dream Theater❤They are all outstanding musicians!

James LaBrie (vocals) of Dream Theater is from Canada... He joined the band in 1991 after Dream Theater's first album was released in 1989... He was operatically trained and has been Dream Theater's lead singer ever since. He also has released a few solo records - the latest being 'Beautiful shade of grey' (2022)... LaBrie has also come under fire from Dream Theater's hardcore fanbase for his vocal style, but most agree that he is one of the few vocalists who can match Dream Theater's sonic power.

Dream Theater was initially formed as the band Majesty in the 80's by students at Berklee School of music... their current drummer Mike Mangini actually taught at Berklee before joining Dream Theater in 2011... Their current keyboardist Jordan Rudess is a musical genius - a graduate of Juilliard School... Dream Theater wanted to make progressive metal w/ time changes, challenging pieces and a wide array of musical influences, from heavy metal to 70's prog rock... Their songs vary from long epics to short ballads to concise bangers 🤘🤘🔥🔥 NY natives John Petrucci (guitar) and John Myung (bass) had played together in high school bands and enrolled in Berklee to study music around 1984 and met Mike Portnoy (drums) there... They bonded over their love of the band Rush... as well as bands like Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, Queen, Yes, Genesis, etc... The 3 decided to form the band Majesty in 1985 w/ another college student Kevin Moore (keyboards)... Chris Collins (vocals) was a friend who became their lead singer and did the first Majesty demos as the band started playing local shows after dropping out of college. In 1988, Majesty were signed to a small label and hired Charlie Dominici (vocals) to record their debut album 'When dream and day unite'... However, the name 'Majesty' was taken... so, Portnoy renamed the band Dream Theater after a movie house in California where his father lived... (They kept the Majesty logo that looked like an 'M' for Dream Theater's album covers) The album was released in 1989, but was not even promoted by the label. By 1990, Charlie Dominici was out and Dream Theater worked on new songs for 2 years as they searched for a new vocalist... In 1991, a tape from Canada brought James LaBrie (vocals) to join Dream Theater as they recorded demos for their 2nd album... A new label offered to sign the band and release their next album. 'Images and words' (1992) was the 2nd Dream Theater album and featured James LaBrie... it was a huge improvement sonically, and as the band toured for the first time, the single 'Pull me under' became a hit on radio... then on MTV... 'Images and words' sold a gold (half million copies) in the US as Dream Theater toured the world for the first time and filmed a concert in Tokyo, Japan for a live video in 1993... Their 3rd album 'Awake' was released in 1994, but sold somewhat less... keyboardist Kevin Moore quit the band after the album was recorded and Derek Sherinian (keyboards) joined the band for the tour... Dream Theater released the EP 'A change of seasons' in 1995 featuring an epic track... After a long delay due to label personnel changes, Dream Theater compromised musically to record the album 'Falling into infinity' (1997)... drummer Mike Portnoy was unhappy w/ the compromises and was persuaded not to quit. Portnoy demanded that the label not interfere w/ the music, and also wanted Jordan Rudess (keyboards) to join Dream Theater in 1999 to replace Derek Sherinian. Dream Theater revisited the 'Metropolis Pt.1' track on 'Images and words' for the 1999 concept album 'Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a memory'... and played the entire record on tour... It was followed up by the 2 CD album 'Six degrees of inner turbulence' (2002) and the 'Train of thought' album in 2003... The band completed their record contract w/ the 2005 album 'Octavarium' and celebrated their 20th anniversary w/ a NYC concert performed alongside a full orchestra - it was released as a live DVD/ CD 'Score' in 2006. In 2007, Dream Theater got a fresh start on a new label and released 'Systematic chaos' (2007) and 'Black clouds & silver linings' (2009) as the band found their popularity surging once again. In 2010, founding drummer Mike Portnoy announced that he was leaving Dream Theater - he wanted to focus on other bands and projects... In 2011, Dream Theater released their drummer audition process on KZbin and revealed that Mike Mangini (drums) had joined the band... Their 2011 album 'A dramatic turn of events' was followed by a live DVD 'Live at Luna Park' filmed in Argentina... The next album was self-titled in 2013 and was followed by another live DVD 'Breaking the fourth wall'... which was filmed at Berklee. In 2016, Dream Theater released a cinematic 2 CD concept album 'The Astonishing'... Their latest 2 albums have been 'Distance over time' (2019) and 'A view from the top of the world' (2021) Here r some Dream Theater suggestions: 'Take the time' ... 'Caught in a web' ... 'Forsaken' ... 'A fortune in lies'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥 DT ballads - 'Wither' ... 'Another day' ... 'Along for the ride' ... 'Lifting shadows off a dream'... 'The spirit carries on' DT epic songs - 'Trial of Tears' ... 'The Glass prison' ... 'A change of seasons'... 'Illumination Theory'...

Great reaction! I’ve seen them five times. The first in 1998 in a small venue and the whole band sounded amazing. I was at the recording of the Live Scenes DVD and again sounded great. LaBrie could hit all the notes. Saw them a few months back in NYC and LaBrie really needs to take a break and rest his voice. I know he’s had vocal issues, and this album is 30 years old, so it’s hard to hit the high notes! But I’m not sure that I will see them again unless he truly gets his voice back. If you want to react to someone operatic that is off most people’s radar, check out TNT - 10,000 Lovers in One, Live in Tokyo 1989. Their vocalist, Tony Harnell is amazing, as is their guitarist Ronni LeTekro.

For another reaction on a voice (on that same song), pls try and look up: "Pull Me Under (Cover) - Dream Theater". That will be from the O'Keefe Music Foundation. Kala Scarpinsky singing, when she was maybe 11. You can find her now by the name Kala Rose. (Does anybody else see the the similarity to "Choke" by The Warning? Same topic, completely different song. Both amazing.) Next topic: the band Bent Knee was founded by members of the Berkeley College of Music in Boston. Holy Ghost is their probably most reviewed song. Very worth, listening to. One of the best examples where a studio version is superior to the live version. James' voice (for the past few years) has been spiraling downward for awhile.. "Pull Me Under" was rightfully a huge hit for the band (and my favorite song of theirs), but is likely best known for its structure, time changes and "chugging". Am amazingly well-crafted progressive rock song.. with amazing drumming.

A Change Of Seasons - live scenes from new york 2000, (but I prefer the LP version), Octavarium (live at Score), Metropolis Part 1, from the same live at Luna Park, or from live at Score (with orchestra on this one ^^), Illumination Theory and Breaking All Illusions live at Breaking The Fourth Wall, The Count Of Tuscany (studio version), In The Presence of Enemies Part 1 and 2, The Ministry of Lost Souls, the entire Six Degrees Of Inner Turbolence (not the album, but the suite, that is, in fact, the 2nd CD of the album, or live at Score). And the list could be almost endless, they're just so amazing, and they're totally masters of their instruments!

Hi Aaliya!!! Another great reaction!!!! The first things I want to tell you are...Hold!! Do not change!! Keep It up!!!! I tell you this because I am sadly watching many reaction channels disappear on YT, and I hope that your channel stays alive for a long time and that it grows, more, more and more. I have been following you for some time but I have never written to you because: (1) I am quite shy with people I don't know, and (2) I have no time enough, and (3) muy english smells like a dead ratt inside a dead cat (as you can read un this comment) Trying to improve It but, again, with no time enough. I would like to make you a recommendation, if you allow me... Since you are very young, I want to recommend this song from 1985 (I'm sure that in that year you weren't even a little person project) and maybe you don't know. HEAR N'AID - "STARS" The Hear n' Aid project was metal's response to pop music charities such as Band Aid and USA For Africa; whose organizers had not invited anyone from hard rock/metal (as almost always, very reviled) So the metalheads did it on their own. Hear n' Aid was founded in 1985 by Ronnie James Dio, a long-time contributor to numerous charitable projects over the years. Hear n' Aid didn't get much media coverage and didn't achieve box office sales like Band Aid or USA for Africa, but it generated a respectable amount of revenue. Ronnie James Dio (Dio/Black Sabbath/Rainbow/Elf), Jimmy Bain (Dio/Rainbow) and Vivian Campbell (Dio/Def Leppard) were responsible for writing "Stars", the single originally written that would help generate income for the hunger. In May 1985, Dio gathered more than 40 hard rock/metal musicians from around the world, and they recorded the song "Stars." The following is a list of lead vocals: Ronnie James Dio: from Dio Dave Meniketti: from Y&T (Yesterday & Today) Rob Halford: from Judas Priest Kevin Dubrow: from Quiet Riot Eric Bloom: from Blue Oyster Cult Paul Shortino: from Rough Cutt Geoff Tate: from Queensryche Don Dokken: from Dokken The highlight, for me, is the guitar solo, which consists of 7 chained guitar solos, in turn divided into several parts, but perfectly united so that it almost seems like a single solo. The transitions are perfect. And, although it is quite long, I am sure it will stay in your head. GUITAR SOLOS: - 1st solo in 4 parts: Craig Goldy/Eddie Ojeda/Craig Goldy/Eddie Ojeda (from the bands Giuffria/Twisted Sister) - 2nd solo in 3 parts: Vivian Campbell/Brad Gillis/Vivian Campbell (from the bands Dio/Night Ranger) - 3rd solo in 3 parts: Neal Schon/George Lynch/Neal Schon (from the bands Journey/Dokken) - 4th solo in 3 parts: Yngwie Malmsteen/Vivian Campbell/ Yngwie Malmsteen (from the bands Yngwie Malmsteen/ Dio) - 5th solo in 4 parts: George Lynch/Carlos Cavazo/George Lynch/Carlos Cavazo (from the bands Dokken/Quiet Riot) - 6th solo in 2 parts: Brad Gillis, Craig Goldy (from the bands Night Ranger, Giuffria) - 7th solo: Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser (from the band Blue Oyster Cult) Last solo and Outro of this part. All of the melodic guitars (or rhythm guitars) lines were performed by Adrian Smith and Dave Murray (both from Iron Maiden). Bass: Jimmy Bain (from Dio) Drums: Vinny Appice (from Dio) Keyboards: Claude Schnell (from Dio) This song has the great advantage that, by having numerous singers and guitarists, all of them of very high level, it will allow you to decide if any of them deserve to be heard with their respective bands. This is the song that I always recommend to get started in the world of hard rock/metal. REACT OR NOT REACT, THAT IS THE QUESTION.... If you decide to react to this recommendation,...WoW!!! I hope you like it as much as I do. But if you decide not to react, I will understand, cause you must receive thousands of recomendations and not everything can be addressed. And I will continue being a subscriber to your Channel and giving you likes, whatever you decide. It is a recommendation, not an order. There are people who get very angry when their suggestion is not heeded. Your Channel, your rules. No one has to tell you what to do and what not to do. Anyway, if you decide not to react, I highly recommend that you listen to this song in private, just for yourself, because I really think you will like it. Make sure you get a correct link. My favorite is this one below: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rp2UZoqgZ7Kqi9ksi=rvza6yPHdLXSzyRm ...although the list of lead guitars is divided incorrectly in the video. Trust the list I gave you above because I have an original vinyl and it appears like this (and you can check it by watching the video) CONCLUSION: This song is a "kind of summary" of the hard rock/metal of the first half of the 80s Greetings from Spain! (Wow, if I write to you again I will try to be much shorter, since this looks like the complete works of Shakespeare....)

Dream Theater has a whole list of live songs that include an orchestra and choir that are much more complex than Pull Me Under. Illumination Theory is a great one but it is lengthy and I'm not sure how many views you would get, as people don't usually listen to this kind of music today. It would perhaps be the best choice to listen to it in your spare time. Are you going to form your own band while you are in music school now? Chuckle. This is not as good as when they performed it live in the 1990's, because James' voice is aging noticeably. When he was younger, he could nail this without so much vowel modification.

in the past I heard Dream Theatre a lot and "Pull me Under" was for me always the best song, so pure, great melody, rythm anyway great. The studio version although was much better in my opinion. All musicians of Dream Theatre are "acrobats" on their instruments and you can hear that the drummer was usually the one, how wrote the songs, the drums have always a big part of everything. Unfortunately after the second (or third) album, their music got more and more negative, very sinister or gloomy motives etc. ↘

It's funny that an opera singer recognizes James Labrie's vocal abilities, here comes a loser who has never even sung in karaoke and wants to belittle the guy, I'm impressed.

I's a common thing. Opera singers rarely sing in tune. And here there was no exception.

This is a good song but it is also maybe their most main stream song. Most of their songs are far more complicated than this.

you need to listen to the original version before James blew out his voice! when he could actually hit the actual notes

When you get Long Island boys that go to Berkeley school of music for most part sooo…the focus on odd meter times and chord progression changes skills. Singer unfortunately and sadly does have the same voice he had

Ouch! A live version! Not saying a lot about the vocals, hint taken there. He truly is a very talented vocalist but he struggles a lot live and you can tell it’s not healthy diaphragmatic singing, you can hear the strain and the discomfort. It’s age plus a past vocal injury but recently, he has sounded better.

Yes. Please don’t play live versions that aren’t from 1994 or prior from the Images And Words album. I’m sorry to say but Jame’s voice sounds terrible on this live version. He’s lost his upper range from the vocal chord rupture. He NEVER had that screechy, screamy, distorted high end that you seem to like. He had a beautiful crisp and clear high range that was one of the best. You really need to listen to the studio version so you know what it is supposed to sound like.

Beautiful lady I know more about Dream Theater then anyone else following since beginning seen live 3 times met them 2 times you can go to any of their albums pick songs at random and find a great song. The glass prison silent man burning my soul all first album fire every album great perfect strangers Deep Purple remake take your fingers from my hair Zebra remake Mike Mangini drummer Prefessor from Berklee College of music who replaced the great Mike Portnoy founder I'd love to chat with you about them I told the singer in 1992 they'd go small clubs to filling major arenas by word of mouth it happened

Horrible live performance! I hear some drum fills missing and the singer can’t hack it, that’s why he’s singing that way. He’s lost it.

I always was wondering how much "help" they got when they made so great studio versions. Once I was at a live concert from them, it was the worst concert I ever saw.
@rodneyramirez603 Жыл бұрын
@@mattesrocket Idk that’s a good question, but I would think that they were able to cut it and one time when they were younger. These guys were studio session quality musicians who can cut sessions with any band at the drop of a dime, but then after a while on the road they get worn out and tired of the music and get sloppy. That’s what I hear here. They also start changing parts on the fly and improvising and that’s also a sign of fatigue.

Dream Theater sounded just as good live as they did on the album back in the 90's and early 2000's (last time I saw them prior to July 2023). Sadly age has caught up the singer. They've played Pull Me Under so many times I'm fine with them improvising and changing it up a little.

They played this song on their last tour, saw them in July. Labrie just can't sing like he used to, the rest of the band is still amazing.
