I was 8 yrs old in 1965 and saw this on The Andy Williams Show. I still say this is the greatest live performance of a song ever. Microphones were like that back then and are probably better than the mics now. Old microphone's are in high demand from many current artist's. I'm not aware of Elvis recording this in 1961. I know he did it right before his death in 1977. Hey dad, make sure you turn your daughter into the greatest and most influential band in history. Ask her if she knows who that is. It would be The Beatles! That should be a must in her music journey. Very smart daughter you have there. Cool kid! Peace ❤❤

Loads of singers have sung this song but none do it better than Bobby Hatfield. The studio version was used in the movie 'Ghost' and was great but this live version is stupendous. He had a cold, his parents were in the audience watching him perform live for the first time and he was sick before he went on. Look at the end when he hits the high notes he does not contort his face like other singers do when they hit a high note. He just bites his lip and smiles as if to say I nailed it.

"Unchained Melody" has been covered like a zillion times. Several singers had a hit with it in the 1950's...I think the names Al Hibbler and Roy Hamilton come to mind. The Righteous Brothers did do a lot of covers. Bill Medley, the other singer, did a great cover of Old Man River. But it's also amazing at how well they sang together given the complete opposites of their vocals. They are definitely one of my favorite vocal acts from this era and recorded two of the most iconic songs ever in this one and "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'". Both appear in numerous movies.

Live performance on the “Andy Williams Show” in 1965. Andy Williams is the one in the middle. This was the first time he had performed it on TV. His family was in the audience and he was fighting a bit of a cold. This is when you needed to have talent. Bobby Hatfield was a counter tenor. The song is from a movie from 1955 called “Unchained”. It’s been covered by a lot of singers, but I believe this is considered the definitive version.

While there is no denying this is an incredible vocal performance, most don't know the story behind the song. In 1954, Alex North was contracted to compose the score for the prison film Unchained (released in 1955). North had a melody he had written in the 1930s and composed and recorded the score when he was asked to write a song based upon the movie's theme. North asked Hy Zaret to write the lyrics. After first refusing, Zaret and North together wrote "Unchained Melody. Zaret refused the producer's request to include the word "unchained" in his lyrics. The song eventually became known as the "Unchained Melody" even though the song does not actually include the word "unchained". Instead, Zaret chose to focus on someone who pines for a lover he has not seen in a "long, lonely time". "Unchained Melody" comes from the film centered on a man who contemplates either escaping from prison to live life on the run or completing his sentence and returning to his wife and family. Knowing this background, the version of this song by Angelina Jordan, at the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize concert truly fits the occasion. Narges Mohammadi was this years' recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Narges was, at the time of this tribute, on a hunger strike while imprisoned in Iran, for being an activist for women's rights. Her two children spoke on her behalf at this event. Most of the performers were Iranian. We know Angelina's grandmother, Mery Zamani, grew up in Iran and was a prodigy for painting and poetry. We can imagine the conversations Mery had with Angelina about Narges. This performance had to be extremely meaningful to Angelina and her family, and I believe Angelina evoked the tremendous emotion of longing love Narges has for her twin children and for all the women in Iran. Here is the link to the performance. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqnHpnqJn6Z9edEsi=jvy-8yqtMzI5DHHb

Great reaction from an adorable father / daughter team! And speaking of family: Further to Andy's comment, Narges' two 17yo twin children had explained moments before Angelina's performance that they hadn't seen their mother in 10 years; her daughter said she couldn't even remember the sound of her mother's voice. Narges' family has suffered greatly outside of prison and in exile in Paris, while their mother/wife suffered in prison.....all on behalf of others. The twins and their father were in the room when Angelina gave her incredibly delicate and moving performance. You owe it to yourselves to give it a listen.

These father-daughter reaction videos have been so fun to watch! It's nice to see them have such a great time while reacting to different kinds of music. Pretty much everyone knows about this song due to this song being used in the movie called Ghost starring Patrick Swayze, Whoopi Goldberg, and Demi Moore from 1990. Like Andy, I think the performance by Angelina Jordan, a child jazz prodigy who is now 18 years old, was outstanding when she sang this last year where she was asked to perform once again at the Nobel Peace Prize concert. She is the first performer under the age of 18 to be asked back to perform for this prestigious event. Shawn and Zoe, you guys should really check it out!

If you noticed, that tiny Mic had a long cord that was attached to a sound system. All mic's were like that and could be removed from their height adjustable stands, back in the day. Now mic's have batteries inside and that's why they are much larger and don't have cords. The sound is actually better with the old mic's. Its like the difference between listening to music through an electronic device or playing a record on a stereo record player hooked up to speakers. Once you hear the difference you realize the old way was better. The modern way is much more convenient but not better sound wise. Bobby covered this song that was first done in a 1955 prison movie called "Unchained". It was more of a sad and longing for his wife song, sung by a prisoner. After 3 other recordings of the song Bobby turned it into the beautiful, hopeful love song that it is today.. Bobby Hatfield owns this song, it is his forever. Elvis' version of the song was recorded in 1977, on his last album and sung by him at his last concert a few weeks before he died. His version is very good and sung in his style. Bobby's original recording of " Unchained Melody" was a top song on the charts back in '65. This recording was used in the movie "Ghost" ( in the pottery scene and at the end of the movie). Because of this movie the recording got a second life. New generations heard it and it went back onto the charts. "Unchained Melody" is the most covered song, with well over 650+ covers. Now its getting na third life on reaction channels. ...... Your daughter did s good job with her reaction. 👍

It's funny that you said, "I don't know the dynamics of microphones...", because there are different types of microphones and the most common one is known as a "dynamic microphone". The kind they were using in the video is a "condenser microphone" which operates differently and, though they are often smaller than dynamic mics, they usually have better sound quality. They aren't used much in live performances these days because they are not as rugged as dynamic mics. Condensers are used more in recording studios, along with "ribbon microphones" which are also high sound quality, but more delicate.

Zoe - This version of "Unchained Melody" has melted the hearts of young women for generations! That would include your mother, grandmothers, and great grandmothers. There are more than 500 known cover recordings, including one by Elvis (very close to the end of his short life), but this performance by Bobby Hatfield is widely regarded as the definitive version. The song was written for a 1955 movie called "Unchained," but has been used in other movies -- most notably, the 1990 Oscar-winner "Ghost."

The original song, sung by Todd Duncan was from the 1955 movie 'Unchained.' Three other singers had hits with it before Bobby Hatfield chose it for a solo starting right back in his high school days. When he recorded it as an album track in 1965, Bill Medley (the other brother) produced it, played piano on it and sang backup. Bobby embellished it with runs and added the octave jump at the end which set his version apart...and is something other singers often try to emulate...not always successfully. The microphone was small because there were no electronics in it... it's simply wired to the amps.

I remember watching this on the Andy Williams Show in the studio. It was the 2nd song they sang that evening. They finished the 1st while I was eating dinner and, having heard it, wandered into the room just as they assembled for the little joke fest. Bobby was a little out of breath during the routine, and I was struck how quickly he picked up the mike and started singing with no sign of strain or looking breathless. I was too young (13) to fully appreciate the beauty, skill and talent of the song and singer, but I did recognize the song from the actual movie having watched it on either Saturday at the movies or Sunday matinee type shows during the afternoons. The movie version was very very slowly sung by a prisoner with a very bass voice capella The black and white film provided instead a static background between the notes Very somber and the song just ended with no flair. Quite the contrast with the melodic Bobby. I've seen many others react to this song and seeing both your reactions brought back similar times with my daughter making similar memories. May you both look back and recall these times fondly.

According to Wikipedia - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unchained_Melody Origin of song In 1954, Alex North was contracted to compose the score for the prison film Unchained (released in 1955). North had a melody he had written in the 1930s and composed and recorded the score when he was asked to write a song based upon the movie's theme. North asked Hy Zaret to write the lyrics. After first refusing, Zaret and North together wrote "Unchained Melody." Zaret refused the producer's request to include the word "unchained" in his lyrics. The song eventually became known as the "Unchained Melody" even though the song does not actually include the word "unchained". Instead, Zaret chose to focus on someone who pines for a lover he has not seen in a "long, lonely time". The film centered on a man who contemplates either escaping from prison to live life on the run or completing his sentence and returning to his wife and family. The song has an unusual harmonic device as the bridge ends on the tonic chord rather than the more usual dominant chord. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack and performs an abbreviated version in the film. Playing one of the prisoners, he sings it, accompanied by another prisoner on guitar, while other prisoners listen sadly. With Duncan singing the vocals, the song was nominated in 1956 for 1955's Oscars, but the Best Song award went to the hit song "Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing". William Stirrat, an electrical engineer, claimed to have written the lyrics as a teenager in 1936 under the pen name "Hy Zaret" only to have North use the uncredited words in the 1955 original. The case went to court and the dispute was resolved completely in favor of the real Zaret (the one born Hyman Zaritsky) who continued to receive all royalties.

I enjoyed your reaction. This song was written in 1955 for a prison film called "Unchained". Many artist covered this song after the film up to even now but in 1965 when The Righteous Brothers sang it Bobby Hatfield changed it up and made it his song and all artist that has covered it since has used his version. In 1990 third song was in The movie "Ghost" and this song hit the billboard so The Righteous Brothers re-recorded it and both versions 1965 & 1990 were both in the top 20 on the billboard. This made music history. Also they were very good friends with Elvis and Elvis did several of their songs. I agree that GOD gifted Bobby mightily because he could make you feel every word he sang.
