Glad you had a great trip and thanks for thinking of us by planning ahead for that. It made me smile to hear that you found yourself wanting to listen to LZ while you were away. ;) Yep, "Heartbreaker" is excellent! In addition to Page's remarkable riff, there's that fabulous solo, which was completely improvised. During some concerts, he would stretch it out by incorporating parts of other songs that he liked, even including bits from one of Bach's compositions. Page is just incredible. LZ performed "Heartbreaker" quite a bit during their concert tours. "Living Loving Maid" is about a groupie who used to follow them around and bother the band. Page didn't care much for the song so they never performed it in concert. Although it immediately followed "Heartbreaker" on the album, that was sort of a "blip", but DJs played them together so people got used to hearing them that way. Thanks for another great reaction, Silas. Glad you're digging LZ so much. Rock on! :) Edit: Picking an LZ favorite is nearly impossible. I gave it up. On my list of favorite LZ songs, about 52 crowd the number one spot, their other 52 crowd number two. lol

I was 14 in October of 1969 when I first listened to LZ II. Heartbreaker blew my mind. I had never heard Hard Rock before. I listened to it with headphones on, using a Garrard turntable, and a RL copy of LZ II.... It was AMAZING!!! PS: When I recorded Zep songs onto cassette to play in my car, I never included LLM. Lazy FM radio DJ's didn't want to try and time the ending of HB into LLM, so they just let it play, and people heard both songs, as a tradition. But LZ never played LLM in concert...

My older bro (2 years) also pretty much turned me on to Zeppelin! (And Sabbath, Floyd, many others!) He floored me with presence blowing out his boombox one day in 1976. I knew Stairway, Black Dog, Ramble On, but was not yet a connoisseur, nor had I kept up with their album releases, me being in like 8th grade at the time. But I was lioke, "THIS is Zeppelin??" Achilles Last Stand, Hots On For Nowhere, and all the rest. I had graduated to true fanhood.

That guitar solo in Heartbreaker - where is pauses just before Jimmy unleashes his flurry - is almost literally the birth of Heavy Metal. Eddie Van Halen said the fingerpicking style of that solo is what inspired him to create his fingerpicking style.

you are correct to be blown away by that solo! It is iconic, timeless. the song's riff (alos iconic) is one of the few things i ever bothered to pick out on my acoustic guitar i never played enough of when i was about your age, lol! my borther was a drummer (and became a professional one) and some friends were in bands, and we all loved Zeppelin and other "classic rock" groups. after the solo, HB takes off with increasing velocity until that heart-STOPPING moment just before the end. Brilliant!

I know this is an older reaction, so you might not see this, but 2 things: First, I consider (and I've been playing the guitar for 40 years) the solos in Heartbreaker to be arguably the best ever in rock and roll. The combination of the buildup, the structure, and the sheer speed are unmatched by any other. Second, after seeing a few of your reactions, I think sometimes you miss the work of JPJ on bass; in Heartbreaker, the lows he gets are really impressive, and his speed backing the second solo is incredible! This is common in Zep songs...you may hear a song several times, and then suddenly notice the wonderful things he's doing in the background. Anyways, I'm liking your reactions, keep it up and have fun!

Glad you enjoyed your vacation and glad you're back. The only part of Michigan I've seen is the UP - absolutely gorgeous and I even saw the Northern Lights up there once. The Heartbreaker solo is killer. That solo was an afterthought by Jimmy; the finished song didn't have a solo, but Jimmy decided he wanted one so recorded it and slotted it into the song. If you notice, the guitar tone sounds a little different from the rest of the song. Don't forget about John Paul Jones on bass. He follows Jimmy's guitar and adds weight. Normally the rhythm section of drums and bass work primarily together, however Zeppelin was so talented, the bass or drums could follow the guitar to provide different dimensions. Believe it or not, none of them liked Living Loving Maid; they felt it didn't fit with their musical vision and considered it too pop music sounding. Here's a link for a fantastic live performance of Heartbreaker from Earls Court in 1975 kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3K9mqiQhLd3aZo
