I don't think anyone pointed out that that is the drummer Keith Moon doing the lead vocals on "Tommy's Holiday Camp"...Heh...You really get a sense of his personality there...

Tommy is a Rock Opera. Therefore some songs are written to just move the story along. BUT their next album LIVE AT LEEDS will show you where Led Zeppelin got their inspiration. And then the next studio album WHO’S NEXT is one of the greatest rock albums ever done.

After the mirror was smashed, Tommy got his sight, hearing and voice back again. So by I'm Free, he had his senses back again. He was feeling free and enlightened. The ending wasn't about his uncle- it had to do with Tommy's followers revolting against him, and not wanting to give up their physical comforts or lose their senses, on Tommy's path to enlightenment, much as the followers of Jesus had. So Tommy went on to climb even further towards enlightenment, while his followers abandoned him.

I think you’ll also really enjoy Who’s Next and Quadrophenia, a lot more rooted in hard rock

Good on you for playing the entire thing. The Who were a very important group, contributing much to the advancement of the music scene.

Who's Next should be next. Bangers a plenty. A mental break from the concept album. You will enjoy EVERY song. Then do quadrrophenia.

Tommy's Holiday Camp is based on British Holiday Camps that were for working class and middle class families. They usually had group activities, contests, dances, a swimming area and all kinds of entertainment. They were also very controlled and kind of stuffy. " We're Not Gonna Take It " is Tommy's followers rejecting him and abandoning his camp and the final song is Tommy moving on to learn about himself and more spiritual things.

Rock music as the new religion is one idea proffered here, and Uncle Ernie becomes the exploitative relative in a different way towards the end. Ernie is trying to make money off of the grown and cured Tommy, through a holiday camp dedicated to Tommy. This rock opera/musical has many multiple layers of meaning. One can set the album aside for many years sometimes, return to it, and discover something new.

Big compliment for your dedicated reaction and enthusiasm until the end. The Who as pioneers already knew why they had to release this «rock-pop» version in the opera format in the late 60's. It’s the original backbones of Tommy, interesting for everyone who follows the creative process. A big thank you to LAWRENCE SMITH and others for suggesting Live At The Isle of Wight 1970, DVD released 1996 (totally pass me by; was in grunge/Pearl Jam rock fever). It’s a absolutely fantastic rock version with 18 of the 24 songs - The Who in the orignal cast with Keith Moon full energy and passion without unnecessary ballast. I’m not a fan of ranking (British or US feature); but this live rock album is so good as Made in Japan and shows again how important The Who were/are(?) specially for rock of the 70ies incl. punk rock (lyrics with this social component). Silas I’m excited to see how you continue; i’m open to everything: a musical journey through time with bright spots!!!

Great job, Silas! This is a difficult album because the storytelling is kinda fragmented. As others have said on KZbin, it might work better had "I'm Free" been placed between "Miracle Cure" and "Sally Simpson", but I still don't think Pete did the best job of presenting his "vision" of the story here. Remember, though, that at the time vinyl imposed serious restrictions on how the songs could flow...putting more than 22 minutes or so on one side wasn't done as the sound quality would suffer greatly. Despite its flaws, I've always loved Tommy and do agree with you that it ends magnificently. For your next Who, either go back to some of their late '60s singles, check out how they did Tommy live (Tanglewood concert), or move up to Who's Next, which is one of the greatest rock albums of all time! And then Quadrophenia to see how Pete improved upon the rock opera format.

Your next Who album should be Who`s Next followed by Quadrophenia studio wise for their live sound Live at Leeds 1970. Visually watch A Quick One at the rock n roll circus 1968 and Young Man Blues Isle of Wight Festival 1970.

It was so great to go through the whole album with you Silas. I'm not sure how old you are, but I was probably around your age when it first came out. It's never gotten old for me. One suggestion… You seem to really love the drums, so, if you haven't already, take a look at the Who video a 'A Quick One While He's Away'. You can watch Keith Moon play drums in all his glory.

Seems tame by today's rock/metal standards. Pete Townsend was pretty young when he composed this and the record company (big bosses and money men at the time) was not too thrilled with it. So glad you enjoyed this groundbreaking album. Would suggest you read a synopsis of the story so you will have a better idea of what is going on during your next listens 😁Then add the album "Quadophenia" to your listening queue.

As a kid Tommy's Holiday Camp was my favorite cause of how wacky it sounded but so many good ones on this album like Sally Simpson We're Not Gonna Take It (not the Twisted Sister song which was written and titled the same as The Who's song but The Who's song came out first). I could be wrong but I think Tommy's Holiday Camp also features Keith Moon singing though he may be singing with Pete Townshend cause i hear his voice too.

Not exactly their hardest rocking album (for me, that would be Who's Next) but a great story and a landmark album for being the first Rock Opera.

The only other band I felt did anything similar to this that I enjoyed listening all the way through (and they may have had been influenced by The Who) was Green Day's American Idiot album. They had a character named St Jimmy who had a tragic end to him just the same as the character in Quadrophenia (also named Jimmy or at least i think his ending was just as tragic) either way both Green Day's American Idiot and The Who's Quadrophenia are great albums to listen to.

Interesting to see such a young person hear such an old record. As good as Tommy is, IMO this band's real masterpiece is Quadrophenia. More gritty and real than Tommy.

Great reviews, Silas. Read up on the story line and the songs will make more sense in tone and lyrics. Just like The Wall, a few band members were singing as different characters in the story so at the very list, follow a list of characters. I am a bit jealous of you getting to experience all these songs/albums as new but I know, like many of us, you will remember these first steps for decades to come. FYI, it was Tommy's security team that threw Sally off the stage.

Risk Melting your brain, watch the movie where they demonstrate as a parent you can love your children and still mess them up in the head. Then do a commentary of your thoughts and show pictures of actors that did your favorite songs in the movie. I don't think it is possible to show edited footage of the film.

Tommys Followers abandon him after it all gets too Commercial with the Holiday Camps and all. We're not Gonna take it. Nothing to do with the Uncle. Tommy is like the Jesus in the story. Imagine if Jesus built Camps and started charging his Followers to come for the whole Jesus experience. Look at in real life how people Follow famous people all the time and buy merchandise. It kinda represents Consumerism as well. Also fame, and how to Handle being famous. Tommy starts out becoming famous when he beats the Champ in Pinball and starts out small with a few fans, But eventually his Fame grows into the mIllions and that is when he goes down the wrong path and starts getting greedy and his Followers forsake him and rape him. (rape is used here not in the sexual sense but in the sense of stripping Tommy of the power that he holds over them like most Famous people do.)
