As a lifeguard myself: It is sometimes unrealistic to see someone drowning until they are unconscious. Lifeguards are expected to see everything and anything that happens in a pool and that can’t always happen. We should always try our damned best because people lives depend on it but it’s not always realistic. You can never be too safe while swimming. Take extra precautions and don’t rely on your guard on their own. There are often many people splashing around in a pool causing a lot of commotion which can make it difficult to see anyone who might actually be in distress or drowning. Sure it’s our job to see everyone but we are only human too. I wouldn’t necessarily call him a hero but when you see someone drowning and that adrenaline kicks in, you may not always take the right steps. He did take the right steps and that child is alive because of that. That’s the important thing.

Did you see the size of that pool? Is minuscule, is a pond, as a lifeguard for 15 years I see he was not paying much attention to the water, at least he did something about it...

Bollocks I worked in the busiest pool in the north of England and you are talking shite .Professional lifeguards spot casualties in any situation and prevent incidents .You should be ashamed of yourself.

Used my lifeguard skills at a waterslide park in CA many years ago. I was thankful that I had learned them, as were the parents of the girl that I had saved. On a side note, I have saved three people, including myself, using the Heimlich maneuver.

Like I stated below in a comment alot of people take the job for granite and play around. Not properly scanning or just doing something else. Your suppose to keep a good 10/20 if you can not with the current set up there should be a change with the management maybe more guards or maybe better ones but something has to change. Just recently had a drowning at a life guarded pool not to far from my house. The little boy died 4years old. Where were the lifeguards, or even the parents. The child had not been watched by parents and not spotted by the guards it's sad but should of Been prevented.

Should've have spotted the kid go active way before rescue breathing I agree Joey Ross. Vigilance is key and this could've been prevented all together.

Everyone's complaining that the kid was spotted too late but why has no one brought up that a five or six year old was allowed in a pool without their parents. Maybe it's allowed at some pools but where I work children under twelve aren't allowed unless they're accompanied by a guardian over eighteen and must be in sight of each other at all times.

Thats what im saying. Hes being praised as a hero but any lifeguard knows you have to fuck up horribly to let a kid drown until they are unconscious in a pool YOU are watching.
@lexibaldwin347 жыл бұрын
I'm a lifeguard myself and have had to do CPR earlier in the job. It really isn't heroic because if the person reaches the point that they are unconscious, we have already failed. Lifeguards receive training on how to realize someone needs help and they should ALWAYS be reached before losing consciousness. If you have to do CPR then you are not being a hero, but simply trying to fix YOUR lethal mistake
@Matt_K23 жыл бұрын
I'm gonna have to say he failed, he didn't recognize the child was drowning till he was unconscious and flipped over, especially at such a small pool with little to no hindrance for depth perception.

As a lifeguard for 2 years, he failed his job miserably. That kid shouldn’t have been unconscious at first. He should have spotted the child BEFORE he/she was unconscious. I’m not trying to be rude or start any arguments, I’m just saying my opinion on the lifeguard.

Honestly, I don’t think it’s heroic. It’s good that he pulled him out yes, but it shouldn’t have gotten to that point. Lifeguards should notice signs of drowning before it gets to unconscious.

I hate it when a lifeguard rescues someone and gets called a "hero" it's there job and that's why they do it
@XXL3G1TC4NXX7 жыл бұрын
Ugur Temel That doesn't make what they do any less heroic. They did what no one else is willing to do, save a life. They kept their composure while everyone else panicked or didn't even know what was going on. It's just as amazing even though it's only "their job".
@lexibaldwin347 жыл бұрын
+XXL3G1TC4NXX As a lifeguard myself I have had to do CPR several times. In my opinion, it is never heroic if you have to save an unconscious person because we are trained to notice before that happens. I myself have failed in that aspect earlier on in the job, and it isn't heroic because it shouldn't ever get to that point... but that's just my perspective

Sorry, I don't feel like he should be praised at all. The kid was unconscious floating face down. Right there you failed at your job. I know this video is old news now but I actually feel like he should have been fired. What good use is a person as a lifeguard if a kid has to be floating face down for you to notice they're drowning? I hope he's never the only lifeguard on duty again. Could have been prevented.

You're right I don't know the pool lay out but the facilities lifeguard should, I also had to preform CPR before, it was not for a drowning but for a cardiac arrest. I have worked at my fair share of places where lifeguards took their job for granite and played around while on duty I have no sympathy for slackers.
