Hero Turtles?
Back in the 80s, USA had a ninja craze. We had ninjas in comics, in videogames, in movies, ninjas everywhere!
In the UK, they have an organization called BBFC that rates every video that are released commercially, like cinemas, home videos, etc.
Home videos were pretty new in the 80s and BBFC had no legal requirement to classify them yet, which means that any underage kids could rent or buy movies like Driller Killer and I Spit On Your Grave.
It didn't take long until the public whined that their kids should not have access to these "video nasties", which resulted in some rushed out laws that allowed BBFC to ban or censor whatever they wanted.
Popular ninja weapons like nunchucks and throwing stars appeared in violent ninja movies, so BBFC decided to censor them to prevent young kids from emulating such behavior and hurt themselves or others. Guns and swords were left alone for some reason.
The Turtles cartoon cut away every scene where Michelangelo is shown using his nunchucks, every time somebody says the word "Ninja" it is either changed to "Hero" or the whole scene is cut, and they added sound effects in the fights to make them sound funnier.
...because fighting is fun, right?
This of course resulted in some strange scenes if Michelangelo unarm some thugs with his nunchucks or destroys something.
And since ninja was such a bad word, they had to rename it to Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles.
And of course the rest of Europe had to keep the same name. At least the nunchucks were uncensored in the rest of Europe.
And they were untouched in the game.
Other games, like Ninja Gaiden, got name changes as well. Ninja Gaiden got delayed one year and was renamed into Shadow Warriors.
As for the gameplay...
I pick different routes compared to my Teename Mutant Ninja Turtles run, and I'm kill... letting the enemies capture Raphael so I can show where to rescue captured turtles.
...the last one is almost not worth it, it cost too much health and you can easily die if you are unlucky.
Oh, and I show the "correct" way to complete the last corridor before Shredder, much easier than tanking it.

I'm glad that this upload exists, as the PAL version of this game is what I grew up playing. Watching the original with the sped up music just sounds weird to me.

This game was released in the Italian market (and I believe the Australian market as well) under the "Ninja" title. So, it wasn't quite all of Europe.

Playing this game in my childhood... what a memories. The most similar thing that we got to play with our heroes, the Ninja Turtles. And that water level... the most similar thing to the hell...

here in the netherlands it was the pack-in title for the nes every member of the family had this game. some during 1992 the arcade game as well.. this game is haaaard! i tell ya, its super haaard!!! aaarggg game genie material hahahahahahaha but it is playable

@@jaxxh6529 In Spain we didnt had that pack as far i remember but everyone had the game and yes, it was HARD, i never passed from the third stage, the one with the many buildings.

Unfortunately, that means the swimming level's physics are even worse here than in our NTSC release, since it was not optimized for PAL.

wooow. the soundtrack plays mutch slower just as i remember when i have this game. yeah sometimes thats more fitting with pal (european nes versions) but smb 1 the american soundtrack is slow, while the pal version of that game is super fast hahaha but hey we know already everything and now there is the cowabunga collection on current platforms

PAL runs at 50hz or 25fps compared to NTSC’s 60hz or 30fps

As to this game, because of this adaptation being slower, the already broken collision detection code present in the NTSC (60 hz) release is even worse here (especially in the dam level where you have to swim past the dangerous seaweed in one area).

Bad PAL port. The European consoles were running at a slower speed because the European TV refresh rate was slower (60 Hz NTSC vs 50 Hz PAL) which resulted in slower games and/or music if they didn't compensate for it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6eZZpqhfadqeqM is the NA version that got the soundtrack at normal speed. Some games did compensate for it, like the Batman Nes game.

@@jpnihil5868 I was aware of all this Pal 50hz bullshit when I purchased the dreamcast in 2000 and played Shenmue, Sonic Adventure and Dead or Alive 2, it was shocking thinking all these years I was fooled.

No this is how it's supposed to go. Ntsc is too sped up as they developed it to the PAL standard. It offers superior image quality compared to that washed out NTSC pallette.
