The second is toned down compared to the first movie, but for me the major flaw is how they used Razar and Tokka: they totally wasted the chance to make them a serious treath. I remember this as my major complain when the second movie came out. The third one is as bad as the penicillin pizza.

The 2 movie reference/impressions: "Adrian!" is from the movie "Rocky" (such a great movie and so are the sequels). "You dirty rat, you killed my brother" is an often-used misquote of the actor James Cagney. The closest Cagney ever came to saying that was in "Taxi" (1932): "Come out and take it you dirty yellow bellied rat or I'll give it to ya through the door".

This was great! Tons of nostalgia for me to see this again after so many years. You mentioned that the turtles looked good. 17:46 The only advantage these guys have is in numbers. That's why Raph held his own so well up on the roof before the reinforcements showed up. The Turtles have had fifteen years of Ninjitsu training while they've probably had only six to eight months. That's the Foot Clan's style; they attack in waves to crush their enemies.

My brother and I saw this as kids together in theaters when it came out. When we left we were literally looking down the sewers on a rainy night to maybe see them. Then went together to see it again for the special 30 year anniversary re-release in 2020. It was a nostalgia overdose in the best way... We still do the pork rind joke to this day randomly 🍕🐢🐢🐢🐢 Some fun facts: The original TMNT VHS has a Pizza Hut Little League baseball commercial in the beginning, yet Domino's ended up with the greatest pizza product placement in movie history. AND the delivery guy was actually one of the turtles, out of costume. Also the guy in the cab was one of the turtles out of costume as well. Also there are cut scenes and altered ones of Michelangelo. He was the one shouting from the top of the farm house yet they used Raph's voice. He was also the only Turtle to not have his drawing shown done by April

In Britain in the 1980s & 90s, it was obscene to say or show the word 'ninja' on television. When the cartoon version of this was imported there, the opening titles were altered to say "Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles." I forget whether it was the same for Australia or not.

A small note for the next movie if you decided to watch it : people were rather shocked of the violence in the first movie. Mikey chooses not to engage with serious, heavy subjects, until it gets VERY serious. He doesn't want to think about a time when Splinter won't be with them, so he consciously tunes it out. Until Splinter is taken. Then he has to face it. There were actually a few scenes cut/altered, particularly at the farmhouse, because I think the producers wanted to keep Michelangelo as a fun character for the kids. Originally, after they fled to the farmhouse, Mike lost his sense of humor entirely, was largely silent, and trained relentlessly (only a brief snippet of this remains, in a montage). The 'Turtle Wax' scene was originally a bigger deal, because it highlighted how hard he was training, but more significantly, it was the first joke he cracked since they had to leave their home. If you look closely, it's actually Mikey who throws his fists into the air and yells Splinter's name into the night sky. They dubbed Raph's voice over him. I think the final cut (the producers fired the director during editing so they could cut several scenes) sells Mikey short, and I'd love to see a director's cut released. All that notwithstanding, this is still one of the best comic book movies ever made. All the key story beats and many specific scenes are taken straight from the early comics. 33 years later, this is still THE Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.

I have so many nostalgic memories with this movie I first saw it when I was in preschool a kid in my class had a copy of it on VHS and he really wasn’t a big turtles and surprisingly he wanted to sell it. And I asked how much he wanted $20 for it and so I begged my parents I did chores and did whatever I could to earn the money. And then my mom gave me $20 and I gave it to the kid at my school and then I had it about a week later and I remember I had a TV in my room that had a built-in VCR. And the day I got it I cannot wait to get out of school and go home and go in my room and just sit down and pop it in and watch it and I turned it into a special occasion I made popcorn and I even made some melted butter and just poured it all over the popcorn and I also munched on some goldfish which was my favorite snack at the time still is LOL. And I remember I sat down and I watched it and it blew me the fuck away and that’s what started my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles phase for a while I became obsessed with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. And this was right around the time when Halloween was coming up and I wanted to dress up like one of the turtles I wanted to be Raphael because at the time he was like my favorite Turtle because he kind of reminded me a lot of myself when I was a kid. When I was a kid I used to act like a tough guy, and I used to be a bit hotheaded, stubborn, impatient, Full of anger, and very Angsty. And that year I actually did end up dressing up like Raphael for Halloween and my mom bought me this really cool Raphael costume and one night on Halloween while I was trick-or-treating I decided to reenact that scene where Raphael yells Damn. And I remember running down the sidewalk after getting candy from one of the houses in my neighborhood but it was also because I ended up getting a particular type of candy that I didn’t like and I remember running down the sidewalk and yelling damn like Raphael did in the movie.

There was a line the whole way down the street about a block before you even got to the theater. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers would steal most of that heat a few years later. Regarding the impressions you didn't recognize, one is important, and the other isn't. The important one ("Adriaaaaan!") is from Sylvester Stallone's (sort of) first movie, Rocky, from 1978. He wrote the script himself and was trying to get interest from studios, but they wanted to take it over with their own directors and actors, but he wanted it made a certain way, so he did it cheap and independently. So he also directed and starred in it. It is well worth watching, as well as at least a couple of the sequels.

A friend of mine as a kid had a golden retriever who I called Master Splinter due to the resemblance. A very wise old dog. Technically this is a 90s movie, but the happy synth music and hair styles scream late 80s. Splinter's backstory was different on the cartoon series, Splinter used to be a human named Hamato Yoshi, and was part of an earlier incarnation of the Foot Clan in Japan, but was betrayed and framed by his former student, Oroku Saki - the guy who would become Shredder. No love interest was mentioned. Instead, it was Saki/Shredder's ambition to rule. So, Yoshi/Splinter ended up living in exile and eventually in the New York sewers (eww). The radioactive goo finds him and merging with the dna of the sewar rats, mutates him into a ratman. That same goo changes the dna of his baby turtles, merging with his dna (I don't wanna know how they got his dna) and mutates them into turtle-people. Also, on the cartoon, each turtle had more distinct personalities: Leonardo was the leader, often serious but not in an angry way, Donatello was the brainy, science nerd, always working on new inventions, Raphael was the wise-cracker (even moreso than the others) and not quite the grump he was in this movie, and Michaelangelo was the gnarly surfer dude persona. He was usually the only one who said "cowabunga". Yes, there are 3 of these movies, but they're not a "trilogy" per se. I mean, there is no continuing story arc other than them being ninja turtles. Part 2 is fun but if you accidentally "forget" to watch the 3rd one, no harm done. Your call, of course.

Cool!! Thanks for the intel!! I have heard, since posting this reaction, that the cartoon back story was a bit different for splinter, but I didn’t know how, so this was really interesting! Not sure which one I like better, but it’s cool to know that his character has evolved and changed! I kind of love that each turtle has a very different personality!! It’s just more fun that way! But I am glad to hear that Raphael does have a fun side, he is definitely pretty serious and uptight in this movie! I look forward to the second one! You’re not the only one who has made a comment like that about the third, but I imagine I’ll eventually finish up the set of three movies for good measure!! Thanks for the comment! :):)

@@TaraTunesIn The backstory from the film here, leans more to the original comics. there splinter was the pet of yoshi and after oroku saki killed yoshi, splinter found the turtles in the sewer. The hwole film is a summoning of ideas of the original comic and the 80s cartoon. In the best way possible ^^

The awesome thing about this is it's one of the last of the pre-CGI era style movies. Where studios relied on what one could see in camera with costumes, puppetry, and props instead of shitty computer generated stuff. If this had been done with CGI, it would have been a totally different vibe, and I'm betting nowhere near as popular as it was (and is).

This was one of my favorite childhood movies i even had a huge Laminated Frame of The Turtles in my Room & everything lol forever love my city. Fun Fact; Corey Feldman did the Voice Over of my favorite Turtle lol "Donatello" & Ernie Reyes Jr did the Stunts for Donatello he was also on "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: The Secret of the Ooze" & "The Rundown"(2003) there's a scene where he fights Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and he still has it lol Loved your Reaction😁

Alot of people watch TMNT 90 as a kids film but when you look deeper at it, its got alot more substance than you first see... If you look at scenes like the camp fire and their reactions to Splinter appearing to them, Donney and Mikeys conversation waiting on the pizza with Mikey blatantly ignoring the idea of Splinter eventually dying but being brought to tears and finally accepting the eventuality (and how Donney is always there to comfort Mikey), Leo being contemplative and Raph being almost in awe... In the bit with Raph on the barn yelling out splinter that was actually Mikey if you look closely but they changed the voice to Raphs which kinda dulled the impact of Mikeys trauma for the watcher. If you listen you can also hear in the boss fight, Mikey is the Turtle that lasts the longest against the Shredder, even though you dont see his fight. The fact Raph is so caught up in loosing his Sai, but in the end to save Leonardo he's the first one to throw his weapons away, and how Raph reacts to Casey calling him a freak showing Raph is the turtle most at odds at being what he is (and Mikey being the one most at peace with being a turtle), and Leo loosing his cool at the thought of Splinter being dead were elsewhere hes always calm and collective... Lots of little things you dont see or notice first time around... that makes it more than just a kids movie to me.

Wow I really loved this analysis actually, those are the types of things I really look for in a movie… layers… ones that you might not notice the first time hit after you sit and think on it a few days, or watch it a few times over, stick out and make everything more meaningful! Thanks for this comment!!

It's not a cool thing to Raph and it's also not a dagger, is actually a Japanese weapon called a Sai. And their weapons mean everything is somewhere too if a Jedi loses a lightsaber

These guys were originally conceived to be Marvel characters, whose origin was linked to that of Daredevil. That canister goop they craweld around in was meant to be the same canister that spashed Matt Murdoch's eyes, and his blind sensei "Stick" was imagined to have been Splinter's owner/teacher. And Stick's enemies were a clan of ninja called "The Hand." Alas, Marvel refused the property, so Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird had to publish independently. Who at Marvel do you think is kicking themselves over that?

Not exactly. The concept parodied several elements popular in superhero comics of the time: the mutants of Uncanny X-Men, the teenagers of New Teen Titans and the ninjas of Daredevil, combined with the comic tradition of funny animals such as Howard the Duck.

Believe ir Not, but the Turtles' have kind-of been adopted into the Realm of DC Comics instead. I know that there have been several issues printed, and (a few years ago) there was even an Animated DTV called "Batman Vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!" If you can find it, I'd highly recommend watching it...it is hilariously funny!

Its difficult to describe just how much of a miracle film this is. It shouldn't have worked... it shouldn't have been possible. I think the decision to base it more on the darker comics, that Golden Harvest (Hong Kong film company) produced it ensured the action world be excellent, and Jim Henson's company is the ONLY one that could have pulled off those suits or puppeteering work.

Good Evening Tara, and have I got something for You..! Ever since E.T., I've been trying to find some more Positive movies about Space Aliens (to help with your fear of them). Just last night, I finally dusted off 2 "precious memories" from My Childhood, that would be just Perfect for You: "Explorers" ('85) and "Flight of the Navigator" ('86)! Both movies are Pure Fun with Adventure, Imagination and some of the Most Beautifully Composed Music that I have ever heard! Also, if no one else has recommended "The Last Starfighter" or "Galaxy Quest" to You yet, then those certainly belong on Your List as well!

3 main movies followed by some PSAs and a rock band and a power rangers crossover then a bit of a break then we get a fully CGI film and a CGI/live action for two more films and a couple of fully animated TV ,movies and a batman crossover animated film. Turtles has multiple different canons so each time you see them they may have a different cast or back story or some small change. the three you talked about are all connected however.

Tara, the creators based the comic book off of Marvels' comic book Daredevil , a vigilante that fights in New York City and fights the Ninja Hand Clan . i think they might have based Casey Jones after Jason from the Friday the 13th movies, who wears a hockey mask also, but i think the name Casey Jones might be a sports reference? i don't know. in the cartoon, you might know, April always wore a tight zipper down yellow jumpsuit , so i was a little disappointed that they weren't able to hire a woman that wore such an outfit
