As a Brazilian in 2020, I can say that nothing has improved. Actually, it has only gotten worse, public transport remains expensive and terrible, in addition to being just one of several problems in this country. Our current President is an incompetent and racist who lives in an eternal election. Of the last 4 heads of state, 2 were arrested, one was revoked and the current one interfered with the Federal Police in order to protect his son, a Senator, from an investigation into a corruption scheme involving ghost workers and money laundering. We're screwed!!

Just what happens when young people find a reason to get pissed off. They _could_ address the public transport issue in more constructive ways...maybe contact their elected representatives, or circulate a petition & send it in with media coverage once it has enough signatures? But no. That's too civilized for spoiled brats to get into. Much more exciting to block traffic, make noise, provoke the authorities into reaction & then play martyr when they catch the inevitable beating & arrest. The _polícia_ shouldn't use rubber bullets.
@laralemos1805 жыл бұрын
Schechter Arts In rio it’s impossible to start a conversation about this subject, because most of the politicians who were elected were financed by the bus mafia. It’s not only spoiled brats, it’s about the hard working people who have to pay alot for a shitty service!!

Funniest thing is "the locals" as mentioned and shown in the video are the poor people in Sao Paulo - most them are not locals - they are either migrants from poorer regions or descendants - most of them if not all of them did not take part in these protests in 2013 - these were protests the middle class got involved (or the vast majority) - very few poor Brazilians get involved in protests - most of them believe being poor is just par of their fate - very few if not none of the rich took part in these protests - just like the poor the rich in Brazil believe being rich is their fate - one thing most Brazilians have in common - but particularly the poor is littering - boy they litter - mind you I don't believe they do that because they are bad - it's part of being from a country that has always invested very little in education -

@mecloc445310 жыл бұрын
Jeenius IAMa some services like public transportation should be provided free by the government. Education for the most part is free through college in saudi arabia for instance. The government can do more but it loses money to corruption and things of that nature instead

Shouldn't blame some of the security guards or police, they're just trying to do their jobs. They'll only retaliate if they see a threat, so it must be some lone indifferent protester doing something stupid that ended up everyone being caught up with the act. The dilemmas of a vast protest like this, too many agendas also causes conflict.
@psykikninja11 жыл бұрын
shouldn't blame the secret police for the actions in nazi germany. they just do their job.
@Qiqi12312311 жыл бұрын
haha, psy, two completely different things. One's the gestapos whose hunting down jews and the other are just security guards trying to protect the train stations being wrecked by indifferent anarchists. I'm just saying that a protest against raising the fares of public transportation doesn't mean you destroy a perfectly fine public infrastructure, which pretty much also fly in the face of the agendas they're standing for.

Can you imagine that even if the state of sao paulo would drastically improve public transport by offering more lines and more buses there still is a huge traffic problem. Getting from a to b in that city is a nightmare, you can basically get stuck in a street for an hour or even more. I myself am from the The Netherlands and I can tell you exactly what time I will arrive Amsterdam by train/bus/metro/tram if I leave from the other side of the country. The difference amazes me.

This is a reflection of what every other urban centre must face: ease of transport and ready /safe/affordable public transportation is essential to the structure of a city. I have no doubt this will rise as an issue in situations with global attention - FIFA and Olympics. If this really is a city of such affluence, more should be done to maintain and expand infrastructure. Bike lanes, light rail, and shared/carpool lanes - easy additions to city streets.

Maybe I don't understand entirely, thanks Vice... pffff. I agree that public money should pay for public transport. But those rails cost millions of dollars and shouldn't be free. In Portland, OR I think our rail/bus system, for now, is priced fairly and covers a vast network of streets. Brazilians should protest (and stamp out) government corruption instead of rallying for their entitlement to free transit. Treat the problem, not the symptom.

I agree. Over here in Finland the price of public transportation is also ridiculously high. The irony is that the government wants the use of public transportation to increase in order to combat pollution (that is to say; less people using their own cars and whatnot, and using more trams, trains etc), but the prices are so high that many people travel as bums.

They need attention to the issue, it gets it. Protesting is a great way to get it, but when it escalates into a riot, it loses some credibility but definitely is more apparent. What do you think is a more "educated form of protest?

As someone who probably sees things from a conservative economic viewpoint your system has a surprisingly positive view of people. In the absence or drastic reduction of govt you expect the rich not to take advantage of the poor, you expect them not to form mafias and cartels, you expect them not to rig the system, to try to concentrate all the wealth of the nation(s) in their own hands, to restrict opportunities for acquisition of wealth only to their heirs and peers?
