Karen has worked her magic on you as well as millions of others. What blows my mind is besides the fact that she is one of the great voices, she was a brilliant drummer, recognized as such by her peers in the music industry. A truly gifted woman.

For 53 years I've been amazed every time I hear that heavenly voice! My friend, Karen's voice will still amaze you 50 years from now... Please always remember her, and what a gentle soul she was.

Karen's voice is once in a lifetime. Every time you hear it your mind and body respond to it.... Glad you got to this number; it's one of my two favorite Carpenter's songs ([They Long to be] Close to You is the other...that was their first breakthrough hit). Rainy Days and Monday's is about being depressed and looking to the one you love to help you get past it. And she was a terrific drummer though as their fame grew they took her from behind the drums and had her up front.

The first time I saw Karen Carpenter she was as a drummer (Dick Carpenter Jazz Trio) in some jazz clubs around LA (you did NOT see many female drummers) and she was good. She studied drum technique with Bill Douglass, a well-respected jazz drummer with Benny Goodman and Art Tatum. One of her heroes was Joe Morello the drummer in the Dave Brubeck Quartet the alto saxophonist Paul Desmond wrote a song to highlight Morello on the drums called "Take 5" very difficult to play as it is in 5/4-time signature. By age 17 she had mastered "Take 5". While I agree no one has come close to her singing in the past 40 years but I wish they had left her behind her drums to sing. Playing drums did not distract from her voice. While she had her drums to protect her, she only dieted after she started spending more time as the face of the band, she became anorexic.

It came out 13 years ago? Nah, son. It came out over 52 years ago, LOL. It was released in 1971, no matter when the video was posted, buddy. KZbin has only been around for 18 years, so don't pay attention to when things were posted.

Love to see a young person who genuinely has no idea what they're going to react to, it makes it real. The date the video was posted on KZbin is not necesarily the release date tho lol, this is from 1971 and sadly Karen passed away in 1983, but their music is timeless and i'm glad you enjoyed.

Hi Chase! Yes! The lighting is much better. Now maybe place some pictures (like Karen?) up on the wall because we’d see them now. Surround the 100K aspirational message! It would jazz up the space. There’s light! Now on to Karen you got the right video of one of my favorite Carpenters songs. It has everything, unusual instrument choice, harmonica. A Sax solo by the legend; Bob Messenger. Richard on keyboards. Soaring harmonies (on all albums it was only Karen and Richard). And of course Karen just melting us with her voice. I call that montage opening “The Many Moods Of Karen.” Some cool pix in there, my fave is her smiling, leaning on the sticks with drums in front of her ❤. Now to continue the drum thing. I’m going to recommend the Bacharach/David Medley. It is a fully live performance of the Ed Sullivan Show in late 1970. So early in Carpenters career. It was in front of patients and Army veterans on the lawn of a military hospital. The Bacharach songs were all monster hits from the 60’s and their hit opens the performance. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do and I think it may be your first live experience. There’s no backing track, the harmonies are with the band as it is live.
