@@LyricReactsYT When it comes to the album, one shouldn't forget, that about half of it comes from the legendary rooftop concert. Of course, this means that the production doesn't seem as perfect as we were used to with the Beatles up to that point. Some have already recommended it, I can only agree, to watch Peter Jackson's "Get back" documentary with around 8 hours of footage about the making of the record. This makes a lot of things easier to understand. Except for Across the universe, Get back and Let it be, the song material isn't as brilliant, but it's still solid. The little song fragments are simply part of the Beatles' humor. The rooftop concert, on a cold January midday in 1969, on the roof of the Apple studio in London, shows the Beatles live in pretty good form with support from Billy Preston. When you see and hear McCartney presenting I've Got a Feeling, one can tell, that the track is a real banger. There are two versions of Across the universe, the first was given to the WWF for a sampler. There are two girls singing on it in 1968, Lizzie Bravo and Gayleen Pease, who both died in 2021 and Bravo in particular was a kind of administrator of the Beatles legacy in Brazil. By the way, I'm not a fan of the Naked-Version. For me it makes the record not better in any way and The long and winding road is in both versions Schmalz.

@@jadebel7006 Yes there was time pressure. They had a few weeks to get the album written, recorded and performed and the stress of approaching deadlines made things more tense. Watch Get Back.
@marascusbomm Жыл бұрын
Spot on. The entire Get Back documentary makes a huge deal of the fact the Beatles incredibly set themselves only 3 - 4 weeks to write, rehearse & then record a full album of songs, culminating in a TV special where they would play them all live. Only the Beatles would have enough confidence to even attempt such a crazy undertaking. Ringo was committed to filming a movie with Peter Sellers at the end of January after which he would not be available for several months - So the documentary literally counts down the days focusing on the pressure The Beatles were feeling trying to get everything done before this approaching deadline. It's actually a miracle it's as good as it is, even though most people do not rate it highly by Beatles standards.

Ah, agree with entirely about "Naked". The "original" Let It Be Across the Universe is one of my favourite tracks of all time, but yes the rest are so much better on Naked.
@shadshowadradna Жыл бұрын
Trying to explain this project is probably best left to Peter Jackson's Get Back. The most important thing to understand is that just under six weeks after the release of The White Album (six weeks that included the Christmas holiday), they started work on this, and they only worked on it for a month. The intention was for them to be filmed rehearsing songs for a live show - the recording of the live show essentially becoming their next album. That isn't quite how things turned out, but a few of the songs on this album _were_ recorded live on the rooftop (in London, in January). What we end up with is an album that's really the soundtrack to the documentary film, and thus tries to give a feel of the film by including lots of fragments of speech, and some of the stress-relieving throwaway jams, etc. I Me Mine was shown in the film but the band hadn't actually recorded a proper version of it, which is why they had to come back and record it a year later. Across The Universe actually dates from before The White Album - it was remixed for this.

Here are some insights that may help you get into the album a little more and understand why it sounds they way it does. You brought up a great point about it feeling rushed. It definitely was. Something else they tried to do was get back to just playing as a band and not do so much studio production or experimentation. The orginal idea for the project was to do a live TV special of them playing some of the White Album songs. The Rolling Stones had just filmed their own TV special and the Beatles wanted to do it too. The project got changed to being all new songs instead of White Album songs, that they would debut on live TV, and the recording of this live special would be released as an album. So they decided to film themselves working on the new songs and then play them live in a concert that they would film somewhere exotic. But they only had three and a half weeks to work on the new songs because Ringo had a movie he was in that began shooting in February 69. Over the course of the project, the Beatles couldn't agree on a location for the concert and George quit for a few days. So the TV project was dropped and they decided to make it a film instead. They still didn't know if they wanted to do the songs for a concert or just film them recording an album but they continued to rehearse the songs so they could perform each of them in one take. Eventually the idea came up to do a live performance on the rooftop of Apple studios, so that became the ending they needed for the film. Three of the songs on the album are from that rooftop concert. They then came back the next and final day to record music videos for the other songs they had been rehearsing. The whole project was a major sh*tshow and was very rushed. They had a couple songs that were older and had more work done previously but the majority were new songs that needed to be fully developed very quickly. Also, with everything going on in their lives at the time it was difficult to focus on just being a band and making music. The final week is really when you see them focusing as a band, especially after Billy Preston joined the sessions. You'll see all of this in the Get Back doc and I'll definitely be making some comments about things they don't mention in the doc. Anyway, it's good you gave the Naked version a shot. It definitely helps the album feel better, and Don't Let Me Down should have been on Let It Be. The Naked version moves the ranking up for sure. I would disagree with you about Across the Universe, only because I've heard the Past Masters version. If I had to make my own mix if the song, I would use the Naked version (I don't care for Spector's choir and orchestra arrangement) but add Paul and George's harmonies and delete the apple scuffs vocals from the Past Masters version. That would be the perfect version for me, but thats just my own preference. Oh also, I never did mention that your idea about Hey Jude instead of Revolution 9 on the White Album is a good one. Many fans have the same opinion. Keep up the good work man!

From Wikipedia: Moondogs *A member of the halo family, moon dogs are caused by the refraction of moonlight by hexagonal-plate-shaped ice crystals in cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. They typically appear as a pair of faint patches of light, at around 22° to the left and right of the Moon, and at the same altitude above the horizon as the Moon. They may also appear alongside 22° halos.[2] Moon dogs are rarer than sun dogs because the Moon must be bright, about quarter moon or more, for the moon dogs to be observed. Moon dogs show little color to the unaided human eye because their light is not bright enough to activate the eye's cone cells.[3*

Here are my thoughts on this album. Most people have this very low on their ranking of Beatles albums (like last place), and I can see why, but I never did. I've always had this as a middle-of-the-pack album for ranking because of the songwriting but personally didn't feel like it grabbed me and didnt really care much for it. I was introduced to it in the early 90s before any of the remixes so I only knew the Spector mix, which is cold and distant. Also, most of the songs on the album are the darkest sounding of their career so I need to be in the mood for them. After hearing the Naked version and the Giles Martin remix, I started to enjoy the album mich more because those mixes are a little warmer and not so distant. But then the Get Back doc came out and now I can visualize them playing the songs on the album and the studio banter. The Get Back doc definitely helped me enjoy this album way more than I ever did and now I love the album. I still rank it in the middle, but now I enjoy it as much as Sgt. Pepper, Abbey Road and the White Album.

In 1968 Bob Dylan came out with a "back to the roots" album (John Wesely Harding) that influenced the whole rock world and suddenly the prog rock/psychedilic music the Beatles pioneered seemed passe and both they and the Rolling Stones turned back to simpler songs. You see this in some of The White Album but what became Let It Be is where they really tried to strip their music down to the essentials. That's why the songs seem under produced. It didn't help that half way through they gave up, leaving a mess of tapes, one great single (Get Back/I've Got a Feeling) and the roof top concert. A year later Lennon handed the project over to Phil Spector to make an album out of it and you are not alone in saying he blew it (although Lennon was pleased.) McCartney especially was enraged at the gloppy version of Long and Winding Road smothered in strings and using an inferior take of the song. 23 years later McCartney (with George and Ringo's permission) had the album re-mixed as Let It Be Naked making it the stripped down "you are there" version the Beatles originally intended. I'm so glad you heard the Naked version and agree this made a terrific album. I also love your dedication and enthusiasm in nerding out on the Beatles entire discography taken from a Gen Z POV. I'd love to hear you do the same thing with other bands/artists - Led Zep? Steely Dan? Bob Dylan? The Rolling Stones? The Who? Talking Heads? But I'd have to warn you, you won't get as much response (well maybe for Led Zep) with any other artists, the Beatles were and still are in a category all their own. 30 years after they broke up, their #1 album sold something like 25 million copies world wide, the best selling album of the 2000-210 decade. Finally, you might want to check out Love, the Beatles songs many mashed up with drop dead gorgeous sound.

I'd recommend watching the videos about those songs by "You Can't Unhear This", they explain why I those songs are so great (especially Rain) (in my opinion). Also very excited for Abbey Road, it definitely feels much more complete version than Spector's Let It Be, and even found a good way to put those short songs on an album without it feeling weird. Let It Be is definitely the weakest late Beatles album, the naked version is exceptionally better. I personally prefer the Naked version of Across The Universe, though I do think Spector's version is more psychedelic with John's vocal effect and the fact that they slowed the song down. Very excited for the next 2 Beatles reactions!

When you get to watch the documentary, I think you will understand why the album feels that way ("rushed", as you put it). Won't explain much in case you rather find out by yourself. From Rubber Soul onwards, this is my least favorite album, so the good news is, if you are like me, you will like Abbey Road better than this one. About The Long and Winding Road, I didn't like the song until I had the opportunity to listen to it when I went to a Paul McCartney show in 2010. It just hit differently and, in my opinion, it is the biggest example of how the mixing and maybe even the recording process did this album dirty. Paul himself hates what Phil Spector did to this track.

This album didn’t resonate with me at first either. As a fan that gravitates towards the surreal, boundary-pushing second half of the Beatles’ discography, this was my least favorite for the first few listens. It just sounds so basic compared to the psychedelia stuff, at least on first pass. Having said that, it’s one of those albums that has grown on me quite a bit. It’s sprinkled with some weaker tracks, but Don’t Let Me Down, Across the Universe, Get Back, I’ve Got a Feeling, The Long and Winding Road, and Let It Be are all in my personal top 20 and are generally top Beatles tracks for most fans. Let It Be in particular is just timeless and perfect. Everyone is entitled for their own taste of course. If you’re like most Beatles fans, the different albums and tracks will rise and fall as time passes and speak to you differently in different seasons of life.😊

I was a teenager when the Beatles Anthology came out, and even though I knew some of their music and history, watching the three-part documentary was something that simply changed my life forever. Seeing all the stages of their career together and the history of the songs and albums was something magnificent to see for the first time, although I still remember the first times I heard before their songs randomly on radio programs that broadcast everything mixed up, along with their solo material. Seeing you like other young people reacting for the first time, makes me relive my first time too. At the time I bought the CDs in no specific order and when I heard Let It Be compared to other albums, it seemed short of time, I hated at first Spector's honeyed orchestral addition, but over time I grew to like it. The mini fragments of songs and the total content in my opinion is that Spector did an excellent job, rescuing a project that no one really wanted to polish and he achieved it. The group's idea was to make a live album without recording tricks from previous albums, so it all makes sense, I think that with time you will be able to realize what a gem Spector's Let It Be is. By the way, the best version of Across The Universe is included in Anthologhy 2.

This album was definitely rushed and it didn’t help that Paul was the only one who actually had anything vaguely approaching a recording-ready song. A few of them were written on the spot. You’ll see this in the Get Back documentary. And I’m glad you picked up on the awful mix that Spector put together. One song that Paul was most angry about was The Long and Winding Road. He absolutely hated the choral voices and the fact his piano and singing were so low in the mix. He even sent a cease and desist letter requesting it be removed but he was ignored. He had washed his hands of it and even released his first solo album the week before this album was released.

I like your honesty about this album, although I think you were a little too hard on it. But I can understand why - it is not one of their greatest albums, and I think the main reasons are: 1. The feeling of most of the song are not as timeless as most other Beatles songs, they are wery tied to the time period, where they were made. 2. The conditions of making the songs were not great, the Beatles did not have a lot of enthusiasm for the project and most of the songs were really not finished. 3. Like you said, Phil Spector did not do a great job on the production - you can clearly hear the difference of having Phil Spector in stead of George Martin. And luckily, they finished with 'Abbey Road' together with George Martin again, and what a difference, it made their final album an epic finale. By the way: In spite of it's flaws, I still like the 'Let it Be' album, there are some really great tracks in there, a part from the ones you mention, I really like 'One after 909' and 'I me mine'

I do feel like this is their weak link in their last 7 albums. For an average band, this would be their meal ticket that kept them in the music business for 20-30 years. Songs like across the universe, let it be, I've got a feeling, long and winding road and get back are monsters. But because this is the beatles you expect 8 or 9 monster tracks per album. That was the standard they set themselves. Album on a time limit was never going to produce their best ever. But their talent still made it adequate. I agree Let It Be is the worst of the later period Beatles albums. It has some good songs on it, but the album as a whole just doesn't hang together and isn't overall that great. You'll probably like some of the songs better after a few more listens, but it will never be a great album. Personally, I Like Spector's version of The Long and Winding Road better than the Naked Album. He also did a good job on I Me Mine as well. Lennon said Spector took a bunch of half-assed tapes and a made good record out of it. Lennon was surprised when he heard Spector's version, because the originals made him feel puking, and he thought Spector did such a good job of salvaging the recordings. McCartney didn't like Spector's production of the Long and Winding Road, because he thought it was too overproduced and lush. But when he complained to people at the time about it, everyone else was fine with it, so Paul said he shut up about it. Paul plays the Spector version in concert because people like it the most. The Let It Be Naked version would have never been a hit single, and the Spector version was a number one. They were working on I Me Mine in the Get Back the movie. Lennon teased George about it because the main verse was in 3/4, not 4/4 like a rock song should be. John and Yoko then danced a waltz to it. I Me Mine was the last track they did finish up at Abbey Road, but they were working on it long before that, during the Let It Be / Get Back sessions.

By Beatles standards this is a real stinker. Two of Us, Across The Universe (minus the gloopy choir), Let it Be, I’ve Got Feeling and Get Back all ok; the rest is merd.

My thoughts are the same as yours when it comes to the two album versions. But at first I thought: Maybe you should have heard the album without the Phil Spektor background and what an as***e he was. But in the end I agree with your opinion. Paul McCartney didn't like the album's version at all. Lennon, however, said that he (Spektor) basically made gold out of shit (literally). I think a few songs fit well with this ~Phil Spektor - Wall of Sound~ thing. But for the rest it's just too overproduced. Which is probably also due to the live sound plan Paul McCartney wanted for this project.

Ah the 2nd worst beatles album behind the 2nd album..I think they essentially ran out of creativity..ppl can only be so creative in a certain amount of time without taking a break n having more life experiences..most of the better songs were already released 'get back' (which is overrated) 'across the universe' 'hey jude' all already released, which leaves 2 interludes and only 7 new songs..its not a bad album but there's is no outstanding tracks..just 2 great tracks (let it be, across the universe) 4 good tracks (get backing, long and winding road, I've got a feeling, n one after 909 which was written n previously recorded in 1964) and a bunch of fillers..meaning only half a standard length album was good.. no song is bad but just not of beatles standard..I can imagine at the time being released last , it was a huge disappointment for fans
