This is Lennon on Getting Better: "It is a diary form of writing. All that 'I used to be cruel to my woman, I beat her and kept her apart from the things that she loved' was me. I used to be cruel to my woman, and physically... any woman. I was a hitter. I couldn't express myself and I hit. I fought men and I hit women. That is why I am always on about peace, you see. It is the most violent people who go for love and peace. Everything's the opposite. But I sincerely believe in love and peace. I am a violent man who has learned not to be violent and regrets his violence. I will have to be a lot older before I can face in public how I treated women as a youngster." That interview was made a few months before he died. I'll add that personally I think people are so well aware of Lennon's violent past mostly because he was personally so honest about it and vocal about his desire to change. Several stars of that era were abusive to women, very few would talk about it. Later on, Ringo would also admit to beating his wife - and who doesn't love Ringo?

'Within you Without You' featured George writing, singing, and playing sitar. The rest of the instruments are parts of an Indian orchestra...violins, tablas, harmonium, swarmandal, and dilruba.. This is to not discount George in that his ideas and influences and he himself decided what to do with the song. That's more than many of Lennon and McCartney's songs, where they depended on George Martin for ideas and performances and conducting of other musicians/orchestras

Regarding the outro of A Day In The Life, it was put in the runout groove of the vinyl record. When you get to the end of a side of a vinyl record, there's a small space where the needle will move a bit, and then go back to the beginning of that space. Normally, there would be nothing there, but The Beatles put some studio chatter there, so it plays infinitely until you stop it. And before that, there's a high pitched sound that drives dogs crazy. The idea was basically the track ends, your dog freaks out, and theres all this noise that doesn't stop, supposed to freak you out. Also, Paul sings the chorus of Lucy, there are guest musicians on Within You (but George is the only Beatle memmber,) and Paul plays the solo on Good Morning. One last thing, the 2009 version is widely considered the worst possible way to listen to this album. This album has the most differences between stereo and mono (mono being the version that The Beatles wanted you to hear and actually worked on up until [I think] Magical Mystery Tour.) I would seriously recommend checking out the mono version, you can find it toward the end of the (Super) Deluxe version of the album, it's the version of the tracks without any subtitle like "Remastered 2009" or "Remix." All in all, amazing album, looking forward to more!

No side 2 slump here. In fact they kind of kicked up the energy with more electric guitars and up-tempo songs: "Lovely Rita", "Good Morning, Good Morning" and "Sgt. Pepper's Reprise" before the fantastic finish with "A Day In The Life".
@NehemiahRyan Жыл бұрын
A Day in the Life is just about daily life (hence the song title). John and Paul took random stories out of a newspaper and put their own artistic twist on them. The middle section was just a little snippet that Paul had written but didn't know what to do with so they stuck in the middle. The song was more of a songwriting exercise than anything else. It's best to just enjoy the music, John's beautiful voice, Ringo's incredible drumming and think of it as just talking about various day to day things in life. I hope that helps. Magical Mystery Tour was my favorite Beatles album when I was your age so I'm looking forward to your reaction to it!

I'm so excited about that. I love that you loved it. Again, so much too say. Just to keep with the ending tracks: Good Morning is usually dismissed by many, but I really love that song. It's the more rock'nroll song in the album and it's pure fun. With the Sgt. Peppers reprise, it works as a perfect connection with the last track, probably Beatles' masterpiece. The weird animal sounds are a funny reference to Beach Boys' Pet Sounds. Listen to that album (btw, another fantastic album and very influential to the Beatles and anyone who listened at that time) and you'll catch that. I love the fact that it begins with pet animals sounds and finish with wild ones. And at last, the Lennon vocals in A Day in the Life, omg. They are surely his best, not only with the Beatles, but along all his solo carrer. he never sounded so hautingly beautiful as he sounds here. Congratulations with your amazing reaction. You're great!

the last line that sounds like "never goosy any other way" was like an alarm The Beatles put into the final groove of the record in case you fell asleep listening to the album that line would repeat until you woke up and changed the record or the power went out. It also had a dog whistle in the final groove in case you couldn't wake up the dog would. The boys learned from their producer that dogs can hear octaves higher than what a human can hear so they thought it was cool so they put that onto the final groove. Back in the 1960s record players didn't have automatic shut off so if you didn't get up and take the needle off of the record the needle would get stuck in the final groove indefinitely. Now I grew up in the 1970s and by then we had automatic record changers which picked up the needle automatically after the record was over and so I didn't learn about the "never goosy any other way" line until years later. In fact not until I had the CD version of the album which recreated the final groove trick the band played on all their fans. Ha ha.

Hello my dear Lyric. I'm just glad you didn't fall off your chair backwards out of sheer excitement with this masterpiece, and especially when Ringo sings... lol. The question that can legitimately be asked, is there anything else the Beatles can top Revolvers with? More than half a year of recording time speaks for itself and with A Day In The Life contains probably the best song ever. Released at just the right time when the world was in turmoil, in a peaceful way, Sgt. Pepper fits right into the fabric of the Flower Power era. George Martin's work is also extremely remarkable here, alone the work on For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite, which chooses this circus atmosphere with psychedelic sound from thousands of tape snippets. A masterpiece for me! Likewise She's Leaving Home: Perfect arrangement in sound and singing and harmonies. However, Lucy In The sky is based on a drawing by John's son Julian, with Lucy in the sky with diamonds. Only it was portrayed as LSD by the press and banned by the BBC! I'm curious to hear your reaction to Magical Mystery Tour, which was released in November 1967....

Great job. Quick note just for context, the little bit after A Day In The Life wasn't a part of how the album was laid out. It was a hidden track that unless you left your LP on the turntable until about five minutes after the song ended, you would never hear it. It wasn't listed in the tracks and 99% of Beatle fans never heard it when they played the record. Also a head's up, it happens more in later albums. So little weird things that were placed way after the record was over weren't meant to be heard in conjunction with the track listing. So the actual album ends with A Day in the Life, don't try to think of any deeper meaning of what happens after that.
@MaceGill Жыл бұрын
That last bit ... The gibberish. It was an unlisted 'eater egg' that only makes sense on a physical album on a cheap record player. When a vinyl record came to the end, you had to physically lift the needle. But if you weren't fast enough, the needle would settle into a 'runout groove'. It was just a place of rest for the needle so it wouldn't run over the paper label. The Beatles, instead of leaving the runout groove silent, filled it with that sound. And that sound would keep physically looping. Playing continuously until you lifted the needle.

I love your appreciation for She's Leaving Home and Within You Without You. A lot of people really don't recognize just how good both of those are. McCartney based She's Leaving Home on a newspaper story but, weirdly, although he didn't know it, he'd actually met the girl in question in 1963. I don't think anyone could really say exactly what A Day In The Life is about (because it isn't specifically about anything), but you could say it relates to levels of consciousness: dreaming and daydreaming as you experience the real world. The chorus for Good Morning Good Morning was inspired by a cornflakes TV ad, and arguably that song is doing a similar thing, describing the mundanity of life alongside the unreality of TV ads and the wishful thinking of sexual attraction. Lovely Rita is probably a little less wholesome than you're thinking, as the weird ending is surely a jokey representation of the narrator achieving an orgasm - presumably alone, given that he only nearly "made it" with Rita. The real concept of the album (the way McCartney sold it to Lennon) was that the band should forget that they were The Beatles and forget all the baggage and limitations that went with that; they should basically make whatever music they wanted to make, however "out there" it was, and however impossible it would be to perform it live, since they weren't going to tour the album. The framing of the album as a performance by this alter ego band is only a loose nod to the concept, although turning the album into a fantasy concert could be seen as a demonstration of how touring had been limiting their music up to this point.
@papercup2517 Жыл бұрын
Fantastic comments. Your observations on A Day In the Life, Good Morning, Good Morning, Lovely Rita and the overall concept behind the album are all spot on. *"I don't think anyone could really say exactly what A Day In The Life is about (because it isn't specifically about anything), but you could say it relates to levels of consciousness: dreaming and daydreaming as you experience the real world."* That's probably the best attempt I've seen, and better than anything I've ever managed, at explaining or at least framing the lyrical content of this masterpiece. Thank you!

And it's impressive to think that the first two songs written for this extraordinary album were 'Strawberry Fields Forever' and 'Penny Lane', which the Beatles instead had to release as 45s before the album due to the producers' insistence. A good detail you noticed is how many songs were written by McCartney on this album. About 3 months after this album came out their manager Brian Epstein died which really was the beginning of the end for the band. With Brian dead they had no one to lead them so Paul kind of took that role and became the sort of driving force behind the band. This album and their next album Magical Mystery tour was all Paul's idea. Also as a side note John, George, and Ringo have gone on record saying that this is her least favorite Beatles record (probably because it was mainly Paul's idea) 😁

The Good Morning Good Morning guitar solo is by McCartney 😉 She’s Leaving Home is my absolute favourite Beatles song. It’s just beautiful. A Day in the Life was a collaboration between Lennon and McCartney. Lennon wrote the majority of the lyrics but McCartney was largely responsible for the overall production of the song including the cinematic orchestral bits and the lengthy piano chord fade-out. You mentioned yourself that this was essentially a McCartney-led album. The whole concept of as his, he wrote the majority of the songs and (as said) helped to produce it. The next album you’re gonna listen to also came from an idea by McCartney and was the soundtrack to the critically panned TV film of the same name.

You don't have to do that with voice if your afraid of copyright.... Just stop in middle of each song & make a quick comment about it.

This video is edited to be mostly me talking with barley any Beatles music and it gets blocked for copyright worldwide, it's really strict with Beatles music

I know you're a reaction channel, but I think its a bit annoying when you keep pausing the songs all the time, instead of giving your insight at the end. You don't even listen to the song properly the way you keep pausing constantly. Though I do like that you make the video in 0.5 speed so you can post the video without any cuts.

The 30 second piece of gibberish at the end was never on the original album. This is something they stuck on there in the last 10 years or so. I would just ignore that part because it has nothing to do with the song or the album. Excellent reaction by the way.

You're totally wrong. It was on the original UK release, it was a loop on the inner groove. It was a hidden track, just like the end of Abbey Road was. If anything it added to the mystique, while adding a surprise/'wake up' after the fadeout.

Better than Revolver?! Pah!

Revolver isn't even in the top 3 lol
@PFNel Жыл бұрын
@@lukerose384 Try again. I googled "Best Beatles Album" and these are the rankings of Revolver that came up first (not cherry picked by me; this is exactly how they came up): Rolling Stone: first; The Independent: first; Ultimate Classic Rock: first; Far Out Magazine: second; Live 365: fourth; Pipe Dream: second; Best Ever Albums: second; Study Finds: first; The Mary Sue: first. If you go on and poll a hundred authoritative sources, I have no doubt that Revolver would get more votes than any other Beatles album. This is one instance where the crowds are right. If you want to argue against Revolver, you'd better come armed with Abbey Road or you'll be shouted down. But don't worry; i have controversial opinions as well. For me, "A Day in the Life" isn't even in the top ten of their songs and Sergeant Pepper definitely isn't in their top three albums. I guess it's my turn to be shouted down!

Yeah Revolver is my absolute top 1 Beatles album. My top 3 is: 1. Revolver 2. Rubber Soul 3. White Album
@joebloggs396 Жыл бұрын
The fashion generally changed to Revolver by the mid 90s because of the guitar groups then. However it's just fashion and Sgt Pepper can be seen by many as more inventive. Eleanor Rigby, arguably the strongest song on Revolver, could easily have fitted on Sgt Pepper
@PFNel Жыл бұрын
@@joebloggs396 You make a good point. The consensus choice for the best Beatles album definitely changed from Pepper to Revolver, although Carr and Tyler, in their excellent The Beatles: An Illustrated Record, already held that opinion in 1981 (and probably even earlier, in the first edition of the book). Pepper would have had a strong case if "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane" had stayed on the album, as originally intended, but of course they were taken off. I think a great deal turns on what one thinks of "A Day in the Life". 99% of fans and critics think it's the best Beatles song, but I think it's overrated. It's good, all right, even great, but it's really just another assembly of spare parts, the sort of thing they did with legendary success on side two of Abbey Road.
