And, conversely, John Lennon, after being known for largely writing edgy and/or ironic songs, writes an even more schmaltzy song than Paul usually would, as a lullaby for his son Julian, complete with shamelessly corny orchestration, albeit donating vocal duties to Ringo.

I loved your added comments at the end. The longest ever Beatles session was the one John and Paul spent working together sequencing the tracks for The White Album. This album holds a special place in my heart. It was the first Beatles album I listened to that wasn’t a greatest hits/compilation album and was therefore the first time I felt like I was discovering hidden gems and getting to know and love the Beatles more than every other person knows and loves them. It’s still my third favourite Beatles album all these years later (behind Revolver and Abbey Road). What’s fun about The White Album is that every Beatles fan will agree that there are “filler songs” on it but no Beatles fan will agree what the “filler songs” are. One Beatles fan’s filler will be another Beatles fan’s favourite and vice versa (with a few exceptions). While I don’t think it’s the Beatles’ best album, I do think it’s their most interesting and the best at starting conversations and debates amongst Beatles fans. Enjoy!

On regards of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, the lead weeping guitar was played by the one and only Eric Clapton (although he was originally uncredited for it). George and Eric were best friends for the most part of the former’s life, and collaborated numerous times over the years. There are two versions of this song that I encourage you to check out: one sung by Eric Clapton at the Concert For George in 2002, accompanied by a superstar band including Paul, Ringo, and George’s son Dhani; and other at George’s induction into Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2004 sung by Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne (from ELO), also featuring Dhani Harrison, Steve Winwood and fellow inductee Prince playing a stellar ending solo.

Being a boomer, and one of "those who were there", I can tell you that haters were all over paul because he got really bossy and egotistical around or before this period. The White Album was very difficult. The engineer quit on them for the abuses they threw at each other, they often recorded by themselves...Paul especially was by himself much of the time..playing drums instead of ringo...playing guitar instead of george..on his own songs. The other three were mad at him all the time. This is where their breakup really began. They got sick of paul while recording 'Obla-di" because he kept on and on and on doing take after take. Even Ringo hated it. So, it really gained a bad reputation. Fans and basically the industry tagged the song to paul's ego and passive/aggressive bullying (which was a blend of that, but also he had been the one holding the beatles together, and he then resented their hate of his control, yet he did start to think his shit didn't stink. It's a mixed bag of truths and half/truths. Lennon had his own egotistical faults. Then McCartney sneaked and bought a bunch of their publishing company shares, or whatever that was, behind Lennon's back. It was a mess). But even through that, as Ringo and really the other two have admitted spottily later...there were some good moments recording the album. In the end, they all sooner or later admitted they like the album. When it comes to wanting to do a good job on putting an album out, and saving the brand, they all come together and make it happen. [note: I am a huge fan of 'revolution 9'. I felt Lennon, and felt why he did it. It was a perfect "song" to put on the album. It was one of the leftover psychedelic moments, and a huge one...worthy of Magical Mystery Tour album. I also am a huge fan of McCartney's 'Wild Honeypie". You need to give "Savoy Truffle" another listen.

I think you should do more research on what really happened during the Northern Songs shares situation. Paul had a negligible 1,000 shares more than the 750,000 he started with, which is 0.133%. They both started at 750,000 shares and John lost 100,000 (14%) in his divorce. So the 1,000 shares Paul bought was nothing compared to the 100,000 John had already lost. Paul was just investing in himself and the extra shares didn’t gain him any extra power. I think you’re completely off about who Paul was at the time and what he did. He was not any more egotistical than someone like John. He was just a perfectionist and cared the most. That doesn’t make him an egotistical tyrant.

One of the most fun parts of the White Album is constructing your own single album out of the 30 songs either by your own preference or, if you're a studious and silly Beatle-maniac like many of us are, based on how you think the band might have done it (example: you might not include "Don't Pass Me By," but maybe the Beatles would have given Ringo a spotlight anyway for one of their 12-14 tracks).

As concerns 'revolution 9', I don't know if it is because you are young, or unexposed to various abstract art forms of many kinds, or if you simply are narrow in your scope of enjoyment, or you simply don't know, out of lack of experience, how to listen to something without thinking and talking. Number 9 is to be listened to without examination. It is a sound journey. You cannot...simply cannot find anything in it unless you listen with virgin ears. In the 60s it was all about letting go and letting your mind expand. A lot of "head stuff".was popular, or became popular at this time. Listen to early Pink Floyd albums. The Beatles, paid attention to all the abstract "out there" "underground" stuff, and they in turn influenced other people to DO their 'out there' stuff. It was a "thing", and has value. You just haven't discovered that yet, or maybe won't. Anyone who has done hallucinogenic drugs understands, but you don't have to have done that to see the value. Open your head, or "feed your head", as the Jefferson Airplane said.. AND...perhaps you will find your meaning in the art form you have opened up to and let flow through you without judgement or conventional thought (if you can. No insults here. Just stating sojmething about certain Avant Garde stuff. Conventional thinking only hears and sees "trash" in most such art, whether it's visual or audial}. A musician doesn't have to record or write a traditional conventional "song" in order to have interesting sounds to hear. Again...Pink Floyd.

Your day-after video is an excellent analysis of the White Album as art. As people re-listen to Beatles albums, the tracks they initially dismiss (Dear Prudence, Rocky Raccoon, I Will, etc.) often become favorites, so do yourself a favor and don't skip too many. As for Hey Jude, try updating the side four playlist to include all 3 White Album tracks that were omitted and instead released as singles (Revolution, Hey Jude & Lady Madonna). Its amazing.

This is my short comment about the White Album album. I'll post a longer one separately. The thing I love about this album is that this is the most Beatley album. Most of the songs on it came from them being isolated in India and away from the influence of other music. These truly are their own songs. "The Beatles" is a perfect name for the album. No, you don't have to listen to all 4 sides at once. In order to understand 'Honey Pie', you have to go back to the 30s for what was called Music Hall. Paul's father played Ukelele, and this type of fun tune is very old fashioned indeed. John called it 'granny music'. Personally, I love it. Revolution 9 is a gas in a dark room, and eyes closed. It is actually quite scary and powerful. Yes, such a wonderful diversity in these tracks.

I have zero patience for people who don't get instantly fascinated by Revolution 9 when they hear it - instantly determined to unravel its mysteries: not just the obvious (where do all those samples come from?, what were John & George "really" saying throughout the track?) but the eternal question of what was John's intent at the time, as opposed to how he tried to rationalize it years after the fact. In a way it's the most important thing the Beatles ever did, merely on a technical/meta level.

@anthonyromagnole2807 maybe, but it wasn't widely known til the DJ started the publicity is all I'm saying. Certainly, the Beatles had nothing to do with the clues that fans imagined.
@anthonyromagnole2807 Жыл бұрын
@garylee3685 All I am saying is that my oldest sister and her friends were talking about it in 1967. It may not have been known to the casual fans, but the hard core ones knew about it long before a DJ talked about it. Buying, sharing and discussing albums were major activities in that period.
@garylee3685 Жыл бұрын
@anthonyromagnole2807 since McCartney supposedly died in Nov. 66, I find it hard to believe your sister was talking about it in '67. There were very few "clues" out at that time.

I've heard them talk about it in interviews before 1970..they were very much aware of it and I've heard John say himself that was part of what glass onion was about

Now everyone can play the old parlor game, make the White Album a single not a double album. Choose seven songs a side, fourteen total. Make the White Album a 14 song masterpiece !
@moviemaestro800 Жыл бұрын
And what's amusing about this game is that if you get 30 different people to make a tracklist for a single disc White Album, you'll get 30 different White Albums.

And now...Comment #3: The title of "Ob-la-di-ob-la-da" is a garbled Yoruba phrase that Mac had picked up from percussionist Jimmy Scott. "Martha My Dear" in its finished form is no more about the dog than "Hey Jude" was about Julian by the time he'd finished that. "Helter Skelter" isn't about a slide either: if it means anything at all it has to be a sex song. (Instead of guitar feedback, the jam-out section has Lennon and Mal Evans aimlessly honking around on brass instruments). The "what is this?" in Yer Blues - it's George showing off his new Leslie cabinet. George claimed "Me and My Monkey" was inspired by the Maharishi's bizarre sayings. The coda to "Long Long Long" (preceded in the religious stakes by "Within You..." and arguably "The Inner Light") has a vibrating wine bottle (perched on an amplifier) as percussion. The album version of "Revolution (1) " predates the single version but was released second. One final comment - If he finds R9 so perplexing, I just hope this guy never listens to an early Nurse With Wound album.

I disagree with you on sides 3 and 4- my favorite sides, especially 4. I'm surprised you liked Strawberry Fields and I am the Walrus, but didn't get the eccentric British vibe of Sexy Sadie, Honey Pie, Savoy Truffle, and Cry Baby Cry. I like Dear Prudence, Glass Onion, While my guitar, and Julia, but even they don't capture the surreal nature of the last side. Plus, Helter Skelter isn't my thing. Maybe you'll have a different take on it the more you listen. Ok, now that I just caught your last few minutes, I see that I may have been right. Anything that's as strange as this album can be an acquired taste.

Make sure you listen to Let It Be before Abbey Road, Let It Be was released after Abbey Road, but Abbey Road is their actual last album made and makes for a much better ending anyway.

The album definitely has some filler. It’s a fun game among Beatles fans to make their own single albums, keeping only their favorite songs. Here’s mine: Side One 1. Back in the USSR 2. Dear Prudence 3. Glass Onion 4. Ob-la-di Ob-la-da 5. Wild Honey Pie 6. Yer Blues 7. Mother Nature’s Son 8. Long Long Long 9. Happiness is a Warm Gun Side Two 10. Helter Skelter 11. Im So Tired 12. Blackbird 13. Julia 14. Rocky Raccoon 15. Everybody’s Got Something to Hide Except me and my Monkey 16. While My Guitar Gently Weeps And then I run out of room for the album. Maybe release Martha My Dear and Piggies as a single.

@@LyricReactsYT Well it’s only ~50 seconds, and I like the way it transitions from Ob-la-di. I guess I understand why it gets hate, its pretty silly. It also transitions into Don’t Pass Me By really nicely, but I don’t like that song too much.

Here's the long comment that's unnecessary now since you've already got your schedule posted, haha. Let It Be should be next, Abbey Road should be last. Here's why. [This may be more than you care to know, lol] The White Album was released in November 1968. The Beatles went into the studio in January 1969 and recorded all the songs that ended up on Let It Be, except for one - I, Me, Mine - although they rehearsed the song 40+ times during the same time as the other songs. The Beatles filmed the sessions for a TV special that was dropped and eventually evolved into a feature length film. At the end of January, the band took a break while Ringo filmed a movie for a couple months. During these months, the Beatles gave the recordings of the January sessions to producer Glynn Johns to make an album/soundtrack for the upcoming film. After Ringo finished filming his movie the band returned to the studio to work on a new album, which would become Abbey Road. During the Abbey Road sessions, Get Back/Don't Let Me Down was released as a single in April 1969, intending to accompany the Get Back film and soundtrack to be released shortly after. In May 1969 the Beatles did a photoshoot for the Get Back album cover, and George Martin and Glynn Johns finished a final mix of the album. The release date for Get Back was announced to be in June 1969. But the Get Back film was taking longer than expected to be finished so the album release kept getting pushed back, even though the songs were all recorded and the album was produced and ready for release. Over the months that followed, a couple bootlegged copies of the Get Back album were taken and it became the most bootlegged album ever. It was even played on a few radio stations in Canada and the US before Abbey Road came out. By the end of 1969, the film was almost ready for release but the director wanted to have I, Me, Mine on the soundtrack since there was a scene that had the song. So Paul, George and Ringo recorded the song for him. John was on holiday and had already privately left the band. By the time I Me Mine was recorded the Beatles weren't a band anymore but just three solo artists who were working on their solo careers getting together to record a song. The Get Back album of the January 1969 sessions was retitled "Let It Be" to correspond to the Let It Be single that was just released, and the album tapes were handed over to producer Phil Spector to reproduce a soundtrack. Because the Get Back album couldn't be released until the film was ready, the Beatles decided to release the album they had just finished, Abbey Road. Just one month after the Beatles finished recording Abbey Road, and a few days before it was released, John told the guys he was leaving the band, which ended the Beatles career together as a band. Abbey was indeed the final album The Beatles recorded, which is why it should be last.

No successful band ever put as much *variety* on their albums as the Beatles. It's why you really can't place them in any particular genre, because they could do anything they wanted, and they did, better than just about anyone else.

I am no fan of Revolution #9. After repeated listening one knows the cues by heart. I still feel it was a wasted filler. On the White album you do get some of their best works. some light hearted works. kids songs. music hall songs. Variety. I do not see the Religious tie in to Long, long, long. Not like in Let it Be.

It's still and intriguing album with lots a variety and great moments, lookin forward to the next album reaction/review.

Revolution 9 is awful. Paul McCartney absolutely hated it and was completely against it being on the album. It’s meant to be a sound collage and it’s meant to be a sound representation of what a revolution would be like. It’s still fecking awful, though. It’s funny that you don’t like I Will. It’s one of my absolute favourites! This was the album where each Beatle did their own thing and there are a lot of tracks that only had 2 or 3 of them playing on it. 5 are effectively completely solo; Wild Honey Pie, Julia, Blackbird, Mother Nature’s Son & Good Night (though the final two do have unnamed instrumentalists. You’re right that this is the “we’ll do every genre there is” album (and in the case of Helter Skelter, almost invent a brand new one; heavy metal). Fun fact about Why Don’t We Do It in the Road. John was really upset that Paul didn’t include him in the recording process as it’s his kind of vibe. Anyway, it’s also the album where they fought the most. Recording Let It Be has always been believed to be a terrible experience, but the recent Get Back documentary series has really challenged that view. They actually had a lot of fun being a proper band again for the majority of the time. There were moments of tension but that’s the same for any band. Sadly the contributions to the album by John and George aren’t up to their usual standard. Paul was prolific as hell, though, with two of his songs arguably being in the top 10 he wrote during his time as a Beatle.

McCartney eventually revealed he didn't hate it - he just resented the fact that Lennon froze him out of the creative process, and agitated for its release despite having a year earlier rejected McCartney's own experimental piece (Carnival Of Light)

Interesting that Ob-La-Di-Ob-La-Da was voted one of worst ever songs. Tastes change and it was popular at the time. The Beatles didn’t release it as a single, thank god, but it was covered by Scottish band Marmalade in 1969 and their one-hit-wonder version topped the UK singles chart, the first Scottish band ever to do, before they sank without trace.
