Your obsession with George is echoed by many. He is one reason the Beatles were so iconic. Not only did you have one of, if not the most popular song writing duos of all time in Lennon/McCartney, you had George who's voice, character and song writing ability added greatly to their popularity. Great reaction. I’m 16 and just listened to all the Beatles albums and let me tell you if you once you get to their 6th album Rubber Soul there’s no going back…such mind blowing songs.

I wonder what has happened in your life following listening to all of the Beatles albums? I started listening to the Beatles when was 16 (not at the time they were around). They were my favorites! I never could decide if loved John or Paul more. But I realized I can appreciate them both equally . I went off to college and listened to other music and my love fell by the wayside. Now many years later, I have revisited their music on youtube and they have again brought so much happiness to my life. I love them more than ever if that is possible! Maybe because I can watch all the original footage of their performances, their movies and all the interviews. Wow. They were special guys and so is their music. 🥲

To try to put some things in context… It was uncommon at the time for pop artists to write their own material. It was notable at the time that The Beatles wrote so many of their own songs on these first albums. After this album, there would be only one more album where they did some covers. They actually inspired other bands and artists to start writing their own material, which changed a lot about how things were done in the music business going forward. Before they started recording music and releasing albums, they had spent most of their career doing covers at their live performances. So, they had plenty of experience playing these covers before they recorded them on these albums. In many cases, they did them as good or better than the originals. They only had started to write songs that could try to stand up to the level of their own heroes when they first started recording these albums, and they released some of their biggest hits as singles, not always on their albums. They were attempting to release 2 albums and 4 singles every year. They also had a radio show on the BBC, toured almost non-stop, made television and radio appearances, made movies, did interviews for everyone who was able to get a piece of them, and so on and on and on. They rarely had a moment to themselves. So, when you consider that they were just learning their songwriting craft as they were taking off, that they were picking songs that they thought were highlights of artists they respected to cover, that they had been performing these cover songs often in their live shows, that it was common for artists to perform songs written by others at the time, and that they were expected to turn out so much material at such a fast pace with very little time to spend on writing songs, it shouldn’t be surprising at all that they had covers on their albums that they performed well. Considering this album knocked out their first album from the top of the charts, and that the two albums combined to hold the #1 spot for 51 weeks on the British charts, they did pretty well. This is the last Beatles album released in 1963. They hadn't hit the US yet. By 1964 they had. And "A Hard Day's Night" was released later that year, after their first movie. Also, regarding George… George was the youngest member of the band. At first, he wasn’t interested in writing his own songs, and then he struggled to write songs that came up to the level of the Lennon/McCartney hits that were rocking the world. It wasn’t like they were holding him back, it was more like he took longer to develop. Part of it was because he was younger and started later, and another part of it was because he didn’t have a songwriting partner like Lennon/McCartney were to each other. That was how it was in the beginning, but he got better as time went on. He kind of drifted away from trying to write more popular songs in their middle period when he got so much into the music from India, but he helped open up some doors in that direction for The Beatles. You will hear some of that influence later. In the last couple of years they were all together (in what I consider their 3rd and last period), he had matured as an artist well enough to match some of the best of Lennon/McCartney songs. The 3 big standouts of his IMO during that time were: “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” “Here Comes The Sun,” and “Something.” And he was starting to feel he was being held back about the time they were breaking up. This is part of the reason why his first solo release after The Beatles broke up was a 3 album set (although, the 3rd album in that set consisted of jams). In general, Ringo got one song to sing per album, George got 2 (or 1 per side), and Lennon/McCartney got the rest between them. There are some exceptions, but that’s was how it played out most of the time. In one of their last meetings, after they had finished recording their last album Abbey Road, they discussed the possibility of giving John 4 songs on their next album, Paul 4 songs, George 4 songs, and Ringo 2 songs, if he wanted them. But they broke up soon afterwards, and that never came to pass.

I’m 40, and even I never thought of music in such dichotomous terms. I mean, I suppose during the grunge days in the 90s, my mates and I were aware that Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, etc., lyrics fit our worldview, and the music captured our general energy. However, back then, I felt as though that must’ve how it was with the Beatles, too-because when I got very deeply into the Beatles in my teens, I felt as though I could relate to many of their tunes, as well. I was particularly fond of ‘All My Loving’ during my first year at University, when I was trying to hold a long-distance relationship together. Also, as a guitarist, I love John’s mad rhythm guitar part.

This is my least favorite Beatles album because of all the covers but it's still good to hear how great of a cover band they were. They were excellent musicians. The next album 'A Hard Days Night' is 100% Lennon-McCartney songs, and it's a big step forward in their sound.

Exceptional reaction ! Thank you ! I like your taste, since I vacillate between John and George having the music I enjoy the most, too. You really can pick up upon things that are quite clever and insightful, that I haven’t considered as much if at all. Like the covers being the best and John making upbeat sad songs and George having deeper lyrics. Since I was 15, I’ve considered The Beatles the greatest band and really enjoy the opinions of new listeners that I come across, particularly yours, now.

Those three covers in the middle really are great, as is Money at the end. I do think It Won’t Be Long easily equals them for me though, and All My Loving is my personal favorite Beatles song, I think mostly because of its relevance to my current long-distance relationship. I’m really enjoying your reactions so far! I’m also a pretty recent Beatles fan, only listening to their full discography in the last year.

You need to realize that they never put singles on albums... They released 5 singles all self penned...including.. SHE LOVES YOU..I WANNA HOLD YOUR HAND...FROM ME TO YOU.. IN 1963 !! CHECK OUT PAST MASTERS VOLUME ONE AND TWO...it's all their singles from 1962- 1970 very important to listen to these too...Fin/ London

You're right, their originals do get better. George's voice only gets better. He doesnt have too many Beatles songs, but he does have a solo career. Paul actually *can* do loud, aggressive vocals, but he doesnt do anything like that for quite a long time. A Hard Day's night is their first album that has no covers, all originals. It features the new (at the time) sound of an electric 12-string guitar played by George, and John's first guitar solo.

Most think this is their worst or second worst album. I'd go with my least favorite, but 'It Won't Be Long', 'All My Loving' and 'Not A Second Time' are my favorites from this album. I especially like 'All My Loving' as we made up some naughty changes to the words when we were youngsters about your age. :)

@@thisishere No its immature to rate The Beatles, 1-4. They would not be The Beatles without each other. Do you see what I mean? There is no The Beatles without any one of them. Believe me, girls used to sit around and 'rate' them. This one is my favourite and so on but that was teenage silliness. On their own each one of them contributed so much great music and to prefer George Harrison's Music over John Lennon's is fine. I am saying that rating The Beatles is something I experienced with girls in an immature way back in the old days of the sixties. It was then and is now immature and so were we. Do you see what I am saying? I feel they are now above that.

@@zitabraun1176 When I was a teenage girl sure, I would rate them physically, but that would often change from one week to the next. 😂 As far as the music was concerned, Lennon/McCartney were initially my favorites in terms of songwriting but George slowly began to grow on me.
