TLDR: Ramblings about colors and how I associate them with the characters. This is very stream of consciousness so forgive me if it gets off track at times. It's been a second since I've seen the show in its entirety (am currently re-watching The Untamed so details on WOH are a bit fuzzy) so if I mention some scenes, they may not be in chronological order but I keep seeing a lot of these fanvids and these thoughts have been going through my head since I first saw Wen Kexing so here we are lol. Sorry for the length and if there are any inaccuracies. I’m going off of mostly memory and what I’ve seen from some fanvids so apologies. Please let me know your own thoughts. I'll probably update this once I've re-watched the show. I want to take notes next time so I can have more than just memory to go off of lol so we'll see how that goes. Every time I see clips of this show I just keep getting dragged into my own personal color theory lol ESPECIALLY with WKX's character. It just shows how complex he is as a person. BIG spoilers follow. . . . . Also I want to point out that in Chinese culture, white is considered more of a negative color, being the color predominantly associated with death and is commonly used at funerals. In my interpretations here I use the Western association. However, I do want to make a quick note based on this: Both WKZ and Chengling are first shown in white, and then death happens. So yeah. There's that lol Anyway onto the rambles. With ZZS we only really see him in whites and blues, signifying that he is "pure" despite his deeds and trying to have a clean slate. He is honest about his intentions and purpose despite initially hiding his features. His colors get more pronounced as the show goes on and he becomes closer to WKZ. I find it notable that the only time we see him with ANY red on him is at the end. His coat has red trim on it. Contrast this to WKZ, who we almost exclusively see in vivid colors. He initially appears in white, showing that he is putting on a front and hiding his intentions (a clean slate, if you will) and the more we see him, the more colors bleed in. He seems to mirror ZZS and wears a lot of blues and green early on, especially when he is wooing him. However, the more familiar we get with him, the more his true personality and intentions begin to bleed through. We still see him in predominantly calm colors such as blues and greens however, he almost ALWAYS has some red on him, which is more so associated with Ghost Valley and "evilness". For instance, his green outfit he wears when we first see his ruthless side with the Beggar Gang fight he is wearing a red sash. However the blue outfit he wears when going through the market with ZZS is a bit more telling.. It is blue, but with a LOT of red underneath, hinting at what lies beneath the surface. He is showing ZZS the side of him that he wants him to see, but this is the most red we see on him up until this point and this is also the outfit he wears when his plot with the fake Glazed Armor shards is discovered. The most obvious example of red being used to show his true temperament is when he is in full Chief mode: his outfit is entirely red. And when his identity is revealed to ZZS, he begins to show it a bit more openly, and is even shown wearing a pink garment with red underneath indicating he is being more honest about himself. He is even wearing this pink outfit when him and ZZS fight Ye Baiyi after his identity is discovered. We go back to more blues, however there is also a lot of purple that he wears as well. I think this indicates that it is a merging of his two selves. The one he is when he's with ZZS and his Valley Chief persona. He stays with more blues (I think?) up until the end with the wedding and when he saves ZZS at the Armory where he is wearing blue with a red cloak over it. And the final shot of both of our MCs is ZZS is all white, mirroring the first appearance of WKZ and showing that he now has that clean slate he wanted. Whereas WKZ is wearing white with blue, showing that he too has managed to start over, but this time with more honest and pure intentions. I also want to note that WKZ is the only one we really see utilizing colors in this way. We DO see other characters wearing colors, but not to the degree that WKZ does. The only other character that we really see using colors similarly is Zhao Jing (I've got some thoughts on him as well but that's a whole other ballgame lol) and to a smaller degree, Scorpion King. Everyone else seems to stay in a similar color scheme based off of their positions, wearing mostly variations of whites and blues, such as Cao Weining, etc. Gu Xiang wears predominantly purple (except for some instances where she is in pink), indicating that she has one foot in both the human and ghost worlds. The only real exception to this is her wedding, where she is wearing a green dress with red jewelry. Anyways, thank you for coming to my TED talk lol
