I think I had the same reaction when I first heard the whistling out of the jam.

awww haven’t heard the studio in forever! there’s a big group of phish twitter that’s doing a “reba project” right now, we’re listening to every live version chrono between 93-95 (ending with one of the best live versions, 12/31/95). LOVE this tune. the composition part before the jam (that blissy part in the last 1/4 is the “jam” on this studio) has such a sick fugue within it, it’s fun to hear live. CAN’T WAIT TO SEE YOU AT A SHOW WHEN WE’RE BACK!!! come join us and boogie!

So great that when the " Reba Jam" kicks in you knew immediately , classic Phish rt there. So hapoy I caught a Reba in AC a few weeks ago.!!!

You’re right the guys in Phish were all Zappa fans.. Phish has many different styles in their sound... keep digging there’s a lot there. They’re also considered one of the great live bands of all time

Make sure you check out live versions of Reba. They usually play it twice as fast and their ability to deliver those lyrics at that speed while playing technical parts is mind-blowing. Also, all Reba performances guarantee a jam.

Phish is up there with Widespread Panic and the Grateful Dead. They have extended jam sessions, a devoted fan base, and everyone is baked.

Interesting, man. I haven’t heard this track since the 90s. It’s a damn silly song in the beginning, but you hear how they take it through a lot of different moods along the way. 😂 Your face when the lyrics kicked back in at the end and brought it all full circle. Phish has some intensely cool stuff too. Maybe check out “Stash”, “First Tube”, or “My Friend, My Friend”. “You Enjoy Myself” is a good journey, too. You were quick catching the Frank Zappa influence. Spot on. Trey Anastasio (the lead singer and guitar player here) has a very Zappa-influenced solo style, too. I’ve seen Phish live more times than I’ve seen any other band. They had a catalog of like hundreds of songs, never played the same show twice, so you never knew what you were gonna hear. We’d follow them from city to city. I used to sell beer and cigarettes in the parking lot to pay for food and gas money on tour. And yes, most everybody in the crowd was blazed at the very least. I used to lie on the lawn area at shows tripping on mushrooms and/or rolling on ecstasy and just get lost in it all. Lol, amazing memories from my misspent youth.

Lol! Your reaction at the end when it goes back to the silly chorus after the epic guitar solo. If you want to check out a great live version of Reba (there are many), might I recommend the one from Glen Falls, New York 10/31/94. That same show, they played their version of The Beatles' White Album in its entirety - the first of their "Musical Costumes" shows for Halloween shows.

Idk if you've dipped your toes in the live Phish pond yet but I recommend the Chalkdust Torture from 10/21/95, the video is on youtube. This is a straight ahead rock song. Honestly, anything from 93-97 is peak phish. This show has a great version of Reba as well may I add.

I've found with fusion, and jam bands you have to enjoy the ride. The transitions can be a bit uncomfortable at times, but it's almost always more rewarding in the end.

You hit the mail on the head. They have a great sense of humor. Silly lyrics, practical jokes.. This song I’m sending you is very funny. It’s one of their oldest called YOU ENJOY MYSELF, from their first album, but they throw in a cover of a Loud Armstrong song called Manteca about 2/3 of the way in. You see a Trey the lead diarist laughing during it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qGPVcpiEhcaXmZo
