The Con is without a doubt my favorite era for Tegan and Sara. But I'm coming to terms with the realization that it's so very selfish of me to wish that they'd write/record/perform with this much passion again, because that means also wishing they'd inhabit a similarly intense emotional space. Compare this performance of The Con to the one at Amoeba 10 years later in 2017. The song is the same, and yet it is not the same song. But it is cruel of me to wish Tegan into some state in which she could sing it like she means it. She seems to be in a much better place now and I should be happy for her. This conflicted feeling reminded me of passage: "What is a poet? An unhappy person who conceals profound anguish in his heart but whose lips are so formed that as sighs and cries pass over them they sound like beautiful music. I was there for this one - got there way too early and spent a good amount of time watching traffic on Sunset Boulevard while waiting for them to let people in the store. The only bad part was that I ended up having to watch the show from way in the back by the stairs.
