Hm I wouldn't say their songs are better now, but also not significantly worse. Heartthrob was a superb album, right up there, and that was still quite recent. Their latest album Love You To Death was definitely not up to their standards though... I think they just got a bit lost in the simplistic synth pop for a bit but I think even by the time the album came out they got fairly bored with that again, so I'm thinking the next album may go back to less overblown synth-poppy stuff.

Love their synth pop stylings on Heartthrob, but like you I'd say I'm... confused about how I feel about their most recent album, too. I've given it a few chances and it just hasn't grabbed me like most of their other albums. Also, just want to say that their songs aren't fundamentally dissimilar from the rest of their catalogue, they've just adopted the dressings of electronic and synth orchestration. They've grown as songwriters, but they're still unmistakably Tegan and Sara songs.. And by no means are their synth pop songs more simplistic, in fact it's fairly easier to argue that it's much more complex.
