Good review, Streaky. Thanks! I've had my eye on this one for a while. Thought I might mention, in case it helps someone, that using a HPF on a sidechain to the detector of a compressor does not stop the bass being compressed. Rather, it reduces the amount of bass triggering the unit to compress, but the compression (i.e. gain reduction) is still affecting the full-range signal.

Six minutes, and I've gotten lucky to glimpse for a couple seconds the rack ear of some blue thing, Amazing review, don't you think,Streaky?

There is a sidechain switch on the vtc that lets the bass through uncompressed at either 60 or 120hz.

The "Schwerkraftmaschine" by Tegeler Audio can be set to only compress the bass.

Whats their website? I can't seem to find them anywhere.

Was hoping this was going to be a review on the Schwerkraftmaschine - Der Kompressor aka SKM from Tegeler Audio. Although the Vari Tube looks great, keen to hear what streaky thinks about the SKM! Thanks as always Streaky for the great reviews. Vari Tube looks like a quality build for the money.

When you say 'not using for compression' more for colour, would you add something like a dbx compressor before/after in the chain for drum compression for example? Thanks

Hi streaky. Bought this four years later through your recommendation. Everytime I engage the compressor there is a massive build up of low end from nowhere . Is this a characteristic of this units ?

So in the end which compressor do you prefer for its sound Vari or creme? i´m thinking of getting my first hardware unit for mastering, which one would you recommend?

How does this compare to the Manley Vari MU?

Yes, please do a demo with audio if at all possible on how you use the Creme! Other tutorials would be hugely appreciated! Love your content.

I'm with you on the need for a bass compressor, sure you can get at it with a multiband, I do it sometimes using Blue Cat's multiband mixer MB-7 where I can insert any plugin compressor over whatever band I want (great for flanging bass guitars, you can confine the flanging to just the top end where you can hear it more and leave the bottom intact) but a dedicated bass compressor in hard or software would be amazing.

How does this compare to the UAD style plugins like the SSL G bus?
@FrancisJoa3 жыл бұрын
I do have this compressor and I call it the beauty maker. This compressor gives you a shiny highend (it literally pulls away the blanket) and cleans up the lowend plus you get more depth and width (it really opens up your mix). This is not a compressor to beat the shit out of a signal. Best place for this comp is the mix bus.Btw. you can´t compare this to the SSl G bus compressor because the VTC is a Vari-Mu compressor while the SSl is a VCA compressor.

Hi Streaky, this is the newer revision units ? looking at the inside , it runs only 4 tubes? on their product page ,they were stating it pass by 3 transformers and 4 tubes per channel, since its a dual channel unit i was expecting 8 tubes. am i getting something wrong ? i have contact tegeler and yet to get a reply :(

So if you're not really using these as a compressor, would you rather just have a collection of small boxes with just the input and output stages to get color?
@Streaky_com6 жыл бұрын
Gerhard Westphalen yeah as long as the signal isn’t degraded
@medwaystudios6 жыл бұрын
@@Streaky_com It would be less degraded probably if they are done as simple passive boxes. Lot less circuitry.

Thanks Streaky, are the lil compressors inside this unit the same as, say Eleven guitar rack interface? If so Eleven just alot cheaper. I'm new to this still but very interested. Thanks for your time, great video.

no sure what you mean by Lil compressors...explain

Streaky I'm sorry man I mean, I have an old selection of tubes and I was thinking of recycling them into a new unit. I am just trying to understand your ideas of a good tube sound. Sorry for my blatant ignorance of compression and tubes and mastering.
Looks a nice Compressor! I love hardware gear but its too expensive for just a hobbiest. Could you please review the Leapwing DyneOne? Its a software multi/singleband parallel compressor and in my opinion the best sounding out there. I think you might love it to as its so clean and clear and give you some clean extra DB’s. I use other comps for coloring like the la2a, tube tech etc etc but DyneOne is so different to me. Cheers!
