I have wanted to adopt a tegu for years. I finally got the chance as of around three months ago when my boy Azazel came into my life. About a month into caring for him he stopped eating and started spending most of his time in his hide. Which I assumed meant that he was just starting to brumate ( I am in Northern Wisconsin and we are going into Fall currently). But instead of going down indefinitely he still seems to come out and bask and drink water etc. very early in the morning daily, which I find strange since it has been two or so months since he started "brumating". I was just starting to bond with him since he is skittish and I think still close to a year old, but now I never get to see him to bond or interact with him at all so I just want to find out if he is sick or if this is somewhat normal and I can start bonding with him again when he resumes his normal routine thereafter. His substrate is coco fiber, I give him fresh water daily, his humidity is at 70% consistently, and the temperature gradient goes from around 70-110 degrees in his enclosure. When he hisses it sounds normal so as of right now I am at least sure he doesn't have pneumonia, but I am so new to this I just want to cover all of my bases! I have one baby hibernating and one that is not. Is there a way to safely get the second one down. He keeps coming out and wanting food. He is only a month and a half old.

Will insects feed off of a brumating tegu? I have checked the enclosure but I worry about a rogue cricket or roach taking advantage of him while he's asleep.

Does age effort how they brumate or if they do at all? Just a example with my friends and I have bearded dragons didn't go into brumation until they were all about a year old or older. Then do you take your tegus to get checked for parasites before they go down? I heard it good to get them checked before they do, or does feeding them thawed out food help lower or take out the chance to have parasites? Have you have had a tegu who didn't wanna go down or stayed up much longer then Normal? How was your first time dealing with brumation, and what is the biggest worry or pet peeve about brumation? Compared to your other reptiles are tegus easier or more difficult to deal with brumation? How are they different from others? Final questions it isn't about brumation but what got you into reptiles and made you want to start an business for them? How have reptiles change your life? Is this where you saw yourself as kid and did family or friends support you on this business or did they think this would have been a phase or a flop.

She 65-70 is ok? I was aiming on trying to keep them closer to 55-60 but I recently re-insulated my house snd it’s raised the temps some. I kept them outside till the night time temps got to the low to mid 30s a bf their own temps was high 40s to low 50s. I live kentucky and we have crazy bounces in temps here. Aldo, what’s the lowest temps you’ve seen them handle or kept them at? How do reds and blues compare to black and whites?

What are your temps day/night during the cold season? One thing I'm worrying about is if they don't brumate they don't breed. But I have read somewhere that they still breed even without brumation. I live in a legit tropical country we do have a cold season during december to feb but it's not really that cold.

Lights on or off? Give water in tub or not? If you have bio/bugs can you brumation in the enclosure or are you worried the bugs will eat on the tegu?

Thank you for all of your educational videos! It looks like there are a few questions about brumation for tegus a 2 to 3 months old, our baby isn’t really slowing down with their eating yet. Would this be something to be concerned about?

the hay bedding u use, would u recommend this for hides all year round? i am uk, so mine is housed inside and not bio-active currently. Great vid as usual, gonna share on tegu keepers uk :)

Its summer here in Florida. Its been day 2 and my Tegu has been burrowed for most of the time. What could this mean? Its not cold here.

Make sure he has plenty of places to get in the shade. They burrow to cool down.

Is ok to mist her from time to time while she is brumating she has moss and eco coconut substrate and a fogger which she loves I know she is brumating because she won't accept food and she loves food lol I just wanted to make sure that it was ok to mist her because my room gets warm

I'm watching your videos and I can't find an answer so I'm hoping you can. I have a very odd situation, probably a 1 off but here it goes. I got a red tegu from somebody in Fl (because of the new law), I am in Ga. She is about 2' long. I've had her for 3 weeks now and I've determined that she is brumating. I'm guessing the barometric pressure difference, between Fl and Ga, triggered it However, it is the middle of summer. As I understand it, I can't "wake" her up so Im just going with it. Is it harmful for her to brumate in the summer? Mind you, I keep my house at 70°F, I have the lights and basking lamps, temp gun, solarmeter, ect to maintain proper levels. She is in a 7x2x2 vivarium. I've already shut off the heater and lights. I think I am going to put her in a big tote and in my closet with a bunch of hay and wait till she wakes up. She hasn't burrowed (granted the soil in only a 6"-7" deep. Could this be a minor brumation? Should I turn the heaters and lights back on? Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Hey I have a few questions. First is should you not mist them down so they stay hydrated. Also how often should you check on them? Second is do they tend to "wake up" around the same time each year And lastly I’ve heard that young tegus don’t always go down or people would rather them stay awake instead so what age will they start brumation? I'm super late but question: I've been hearing from everyone online that has (Colombian tegus) that after brumation they forget who you are and they hate you...is this true? I don't have Colombian/gold ...I have a red...just wondering if this is true

Our adult Tegu is going through treatment for pin worm eggs diagnosed by the vet through fecal. Panacur every 2 weeks. But he has definitely shown signs of brumation. Eating and activity has decreased a lot. Rarely leaves the hide. Is it ok to try and keep him up and eating to complete the initial treatment of dosages in a 6 week span?

Soak them in sugar water, helps make the swelling go down.

@@RoseCityReptilesTX Awesome, thanks for the reply! Yeah my male juvenile chacoans cloaca looks a little swollen and bulged, nothing extreme. Just trying to alleviate it before a vet becomes necessary. Removed all cypress bedding and have been trying to up the fiber and water intake in the mean time.

I have a 2or3 month old & 3 yearlings so how would I go about it & only one is slowing down he comes out like every 3 or 4 days so should I stop feeding him or wait till he rejects the food? (When I feed him he didn't eat as much as he normally does) & other 3 are still active & up everyday

If you have a tegu that NEVER turns down a meal and then out of nowhere goes down for burmation early its first or second year what would you do? could you wake it up and try to keep it awake until it poops or just trust the tegu and pray?

Have a 3 month old b&w Chacoan . He comes out around 12-2 then goes back in his hide @ 4-6. Could this be a sign of him getting ready to go down? He's still eating though... any info would help. By the way we live in the Rose city also

When we keep ours inside in an enclosure do we turn off the lights on their enclosure during the brumation period if they show they have buried themselves. Will they go into brumation if kept inside in an enclosure, will it hurt them if the heat does not go below 60 degrees for them to go onto brumation.

My Tegu digs herself in to the bedding but comes out everyday and stay out all day and eats how can or when can you tell when brumation starts for sure is it when they go down for more then a day or two
