I remember hopping an SP freight as a young kid and going on the Tehachapi line. It was an amazing experience I never forgot. Years later as a teen I hung out here a few times watching trains. Thanks for sharing these memories.

At 5:36, the Gentlemen walking into the scene wearing the yellow cap is me. I don't proclaim to be an expert, only going by what I have observed over the years but I believe the oil cans that stopped on the Loop were empty. Thank you Retro Railroading for the GREAT video and for bringing back some good memories.

And the winner of the best railroad to model is... Southern Pacific, because not only do you get to model diesels from the 60's to the 90s's all at the same time you also have the fun of modeling every single other railroad since they leased units from everyone. I sure do miss the SP!

Love these trains! A great era for sure. You dont see these so much anymore, especially SPs. I actually have seen a number of warbonnets and a few bluebonnets lately.

I miss the SP cans! Use to sit inside the Newhall tunnel when they came through, scary, fun, smokey at that time, those days are gone.

@alladinmoua The downhill trains are shorter because they don't have mid-train helpers. The loop itself is 4,000 feet in circumference. However eyeballing the map at fifteen seconds into the video shows the length of the siding leading up to the loop is about as long, for a total of about 8,000 feet.

@BNSFME Those are train orders. Occasionally an engineer will notice railfans and throw expired orders from the previous crew out the window. Search Wikipedia for an article on train order operation to learn more.

@geomodelrailroader The Interstate Commerce Commission will allow a merger as long as two independent railroads end up serving the area. Thus there has been a lot of consolidation over the past few years. It's nationwide networks competing with the same. There are very few regional railroads today.
@geomodelrailroader13 жыл бұрын
a lot of fallow flags SP is now part of Union Pacific Railroads Conrail is now part of Norfolk Southern and all of its northern lines are part of CSX Transport and Santa Fe is now BNSF.

Nice catch of the meet of the "oil cans" on Walong. The ConRail power was not that unusual at the time, they had leased a number of units out. I chased the "oilcans" from Tunnel 2 up to the loop back in 1991.

1:05 Why are the oil tanker cars connected at the top? Vapour collection?
@RetroRailroading7 жыл бұрын
Actually loading the entire system with a single connection. Here are more details: www.alaskarails.org/fp/TankTrain.html www.gatx.com/wps/wcm/connect/GATX/GATX_SITE/Home/Rail+North+America/Products/Equipment+Types/Tank/Acid+and+Specialty/Tank+Train/ Hope this helps answer your question. Someone had the idea to add pipes at the top to load the entire train at once. If there was a derailment depending on how it derailed, you could empty the entire train into a river. Though, I don't think that's very likely.
@alladinmoua13 жыл бұрын
Whoa, that was such an awesome meet! But I have a question: on that day, was there something different about the first (downhill) oil can train? I didn't know they were short enough to fit inside Walong. I've always thought those unit trains were longer, what with all those tankers and big six-axle units.

That noise the cars make at exactly 6:07, howcome you dont hear that these days anymore?
@mr.boomer87946 жыл бұрын
Slack action... quite common really, especially with "blended" braking with too much dynamic...
@RetroRailroading13 жыл бұрын
@grapeape16 Well, you would if a train of that length and weight stopped at the same place on the line.

At 9:30 ....is that an FP45, or am I seeing things???
@geomodelrailroader13 жыл бұрын
@jpkazarian LOL that's what happens in railroading if a railroad is to survive they need to merge with another line or land up getting liquidated. that's what happened to Conrail they got liquidated and CSX and NS carved Conrail up like a turkey. SP almost got bought by BNSF but ICC desolved the merger and gave it and Rio Grande to UP resulting in Soldier Summit and Tehachapi being given to both UP and BNSF
