In this short film we hear the story of how Taiwanese performance artist Tehching Hsieh's life as an illegal immigrant informed his piece One Year Performance 1980-1981.
Hsieh moved from Taiwan to the United States as a stowaway in 1974, living as an illegal immigrant until he was granted amnesty in 1988.
For One Year Performance 1980-1981, Hsieh rigorously punched a time clock every hour for 366 days from 11 April 1980 to 11 April 1981. The resulting installation consists of letters, statements, uniforms, photographs, punch clock and a time card.
Between 1978 and 1986 Hsieh made five year-long performances, followed by a thirteen-year performance of making art but not publicly showing it.

I don't know if someone else has had this experience, but I saw one of his pieces of art, and I just started to cry. I'm not sure if it is because my perception of his work was to not fear the absence of time, or if it was just the stillness of it, but it affected me deeply. Just throwing this out there.

I found his work very comforting. When and if you stop being afraid of death and accept it as natural and destined, you stop being worried of "wasting" time or not doing enough. You just live and pass time

Greatest artist of all time in my opinion. Literally sacrificed everything he had for his work, for years. He is the ultimate testament to what humans are capable of.

during one of his perfomances he lived on the street 100% of time, not going under any roof for one year. i think people like him have a different view on money and time. also I think he made enough cash to sustain himself til rest of his days by selling some of his works, I read some of his works were sold for 90+k $, now imagine how much is that for a guy who can literally live for nothing.

This was my curiosity as well... Maybe he saved up enough over the six years to do the one year project or maybe he got help from other artists in the scene.

He survived on minimum wage doing dishes and cleaning floor in new York and saved up enough for him to live a few years. He is not materialistic at all while his family is very wealthy in Taiwan.

I can't believe that people believe he did this, think about how long a year is. With no sleep. The record is 11 days. This guy says he did that 36 times in a row. Humans can't survive in without PROPER sleep, REM sleep, you can't get that in 1 hour sessions.

Silly comment tbh. It was an incredibly well documented piece. He had witnesses to sign off on his punch cards, he had open days where the public could watch him clock in, there's some 8600 photos of him physically disintegrating, his bedroom was set up so his alarm was hooked up to an amp. To say you don't believe this happened is just embarrassing. There is a genuinely staggering amount of proof he did it.

Nope, they can't. Normals can live a life doing nothing, funny thing is, they think that they are doing something. Working in a shop is doing something? Maybe if you can't remember couple of numbers. But artist, who want to LIVE FROM ART ONLY FROM ART, need to be very active. And your opinions take for yourself, we don't want to be ignorant right?
