this became my mantra when battling yet another depression relapse. while at the bottom of a very dark and lonely place i was literally forcing myself to whisper quietly "still there" and "i'm smiling". so much meaning hidden, and most of all, a different meaning for everyone.

I heard this for the first time this morning at the gym, and nearly had to get off equipment because of the heavy lump in my throat and nearly crying. Absolutely phenomenal song. This is possibly one of the saddest songs I've ever heard, and I listen to melancholic music near exclusively.

still there? still there. I re-count the black days recollect some circumstances even though it takes my sleep I recall the black days the mismatches and the end of some affairs I recall the black days between zenith and nadir is there a pattern anywhere? I recall the black days the blackest one it"s not the last one but it"s there and somewhere down there I"m smiling still smiling I"m smiling from the bottom of my shapeless soul I"m smiling anyway I recount the black days wade through all the shadows even so it takes my sleep I recall the black days the cuts and the recovery from unnecessary growth I recall the black days as maybe grim and melanized but also colourful and somewhere down there I"m smiling still smiling I"m smiling from the bottom of my fairtrade soul I"m smiling ... still there?

I can't imagine you any other way but "still smiling" . Smiling is sometimes a choice that will positively affect you and those that you see. A smile can make the difference in some ones day, even life. Thank you for this piece. It makes me smile. Donna R.

It's unlikely that we'll meet in person but we can have a deep intellectual discussion. "Still smiling" may allude to the world's most famous still smiler, the Mona Lisa. Da Vinci obscurely painted a perfect Euro symbol in one of her eyes which is only detectable with high-tech equipment, hence the singer's "fair trade soul". The Euro symbol was created centuries after the Mona Lisa was painted but nevertheless there's undeniably a distinct Euro symbol in her eye. Another anachronism: the Mona Lisa is a composite portrait of seven people, one of whom is Otto von Bismarck. Bismarck, ND lies smack between the zenith and nadir of the central North American continent. Bismarck was also the epitome of world leadership in his day. There's a laundry list but I'll only add one more. The term "malinized" refers to the Mona Lisa's identity as the image of a seven-headed beast whose corresponding number is 666, the number of a man.
