Aesthetically this game is flawless. Still to this day some of the best character designs and artwork I've even seen in a Tekken. The overall theme of the game was excellent. "A New Century of Fighting". Tekken 4 almost felt like a soft reboot.

TK4 was basically the worst since you couldn't even backdash properly, except Nina who could cover the whole stage in seconds, which made her broken. Besides backdash, movement in general was the same up until TK7, though some were better than others, but it feels the same

I loved this game.l, but I don't understand why people hate it. The haters say that the roster was small, but it was similar to T3's roster. What I really loved about T4 was Hwoarang's moveset. It was so simple back then.

For competitive scene, it was and is pretty much the worst Tekken what I've read. Stages got tons of unnecessary clutter and some of them were uneven, character balance was wonky (especially Jin's God tier status affected the game negatively) and community wasn't pleased with the new mechanics like Position change. Personally, while I never "hated" Tekken 4, it just felt meh in pretty much every single area compared to TTT or Tekken 3 (or later, Tekken 5). Roster could've been a bit bigger and interesting since some known and liked characters got cut like Anna and Jack, newcomers were mostly forgettable or just barely new at all (Combot and Christine) and there was some goofs and errors from Namco, like letting Heihachi be the last boss while wearing a diaper. The biggest disappointment for though was the soundtrack. While Tekken 2 and Tekken 3 ones were both godlikeTekken 4 tracks were mostly like annoying elevator music (like the ones playing in Beach, Mall and Shinjuku).

To be honest, I think Tekken 4 was the last game that felt fresh to me after Tekken 3 (which was amazing). Yes, there are factual claims that highlight that as a game, Tekken 4 was bad in the competitive scene. However, in spite of these issues, my biggest take from the game was the level of presentation which was incredible for its time. The atmosphere, the music (which I loved due to the ambient chill feel), the story-line (which personally was by far the best), the new costume designs and the graphics at the time was quite exceptional. Although, I liked Tekken 5 and 5 DR, I felt that the later games (post Tekken DR) were disappointing to me. Currently, I am not excited for the release of Tekken 7 as it looks like the game went too crazy down the 'anime look' road with certain characters (Lucky Chloe, Gigas, Josie). Also, personally, I believe that the soundtrack in that game is the worst (hate the edm/dubstep influence) in the whole series. My biggest disappointment in the series (post Tekken 5) so far is that Harada and his team are slowly stripping away at everything that is unique to Tekken in the pursuit to simplify the game mechanics (so as to appease to new fans). To me, what is missing in the latest games are combination of great design characters, music and presentation. Those are the very things (along with a good marketing strategy) that were very important in the success of earlier games like Tekken 3 and 5.

This game may have not been as good as the others but I still think it has the best aesthetics of the entire series, the level design, music, and character design all felt so new and modern back then, in fact it still kind of does since Tekken 5 decided to go old school and give us the old designs from T1-T3, with the exception of some characters of course. Seeing old fan favorites like Paul and Lei in new gear was pretty cool since they had similar outfits since they debuted, even new characters like Jin and King II had different designs. It felt like Namco was trying to give Tekken a new look with the new age of gaming, I wish they would have stuck with this tbh.

The tekken with most attention to detail not the best for competitive scene but wow the music, the character design, and the fighting was the best. Doing an electric God fist than slamming your opponent into a bus stop was the best. The game had realistic fighting with tekken moves in between. The arenas where top notch unlike today's horrible wall breaks this game had a real life breathing setting. It felt like the fighters started in a public place like a mall lol

Counterstrikefansz2 For one, never said Tekken 5 sucks. It was "good", but nothing beyond that. It was massively pirated, because people wanted to at least play it, but didn't want to pay money for it. Second, Brown Can said more than just that, and I have no idea why his comments don't show here since I got some pretty clear notifications on my gmail, but whatever, I'm not much for taking trolls seriously anyway. I can provide screenshots from the emails if you don't believe me though. Though I do admit, Brown Can acting like a jackass did piss me off and all, so I might have went a little overboard there, sorry for that. Moving on. Third, while sales aren't the ultimate factor to determine a game's quality, in this particular case it actually shows the difference... PSX had a far bigger problem with piracy than PS2, mostly because the games were horrendously expensive at launch, and it took forever for their price to drop, as opposed to PS2, where the games were cheaper at launch, and their price went down faster. So now, T3 was more expensive and was released on a console with far more piracy, and yet sold incomparably better than T5, a cheaper game released for a console with less piracy. T3 is the second best selling fighting game, second only to SSB Brawl (and Brawl's sales were boosted cause it was added to Wii console purchases), while T5 was the worst selling Tekken game. I think the difference is clear. Fourth, MK Armageddon had the biggest number of playable character yet is one of the worst MK games not to mention one of the worst fighting games possible. As in, the number of playable charas does not mean the game is better, cause if that were so, that would make DBZ or Naruto games superior to any Tekken, hell, that would make MUGEN the ultimate fighting game. As for the graphics... that's the most sad thing a player can say, seriously... if that were the case, why would people be making games with 8-bit graphics even today? Or for a better example, SquareEnix offcially stated that every PSX Final Fantasy available on PSN and iphones has outselled the FFXIII trilogy altogether (and we're talking about these releases alone, NOT the original PSX sales, just the digital PS3/iphone releases). That leaves combos... and here's where things get hilarious... yeah, T5 has more combos available... and 90% of players wont notice the difference cause they're gonna use 5-6 of 'em for the whole damn game |D that, and most of the moves are either heavily disbalanced and/or lack proper coding (I dare you to tweak the game to erase the special effects and not facepalm at the nonexistant hit-detection). T3 and TTT2 are actually the only two Tekken games that were properly balanced (with the sole exception of Eddy, Disco-Eddy and Fem-Eddy, these are always masher-friendly cheap...), or in other words, it's a simple case of quality over quantity.

My favorite stage in this game was the Forest stage. The water graphics looked so damn "realistic" for its time. Also that Beach stage was such a soothing and feel good setting with a chill soundtrack. Kazuya, Law, and Hwoarang were beast in this game and those 3 characters were the ones I used to main.

Might be my favourite Tekken. Minimalist but impactful. The game is beautiful, from the music, the designs, the stages. I hope that one day Namco decides to release a HD version of it

As a non fighting fan I'm quite floored by the atmosphere of Tekken 4 it was unlike anything before or since. Everything screams next gen in this game and Namco was so proud of the game they tells you straight to your face frequently. The presentation was as slick as it gets the UI the smooth transition the graphics the music and dark gripping at times horror like story. Gameplay may not have the same flow as Tekken Tag or Tekken 3 but it was not at all bad just different and I love it feels a bit more weighty than past games and leaves a bit more space to breathe. Game Over in this one is intense though feel like you let the world down.

This Tekken is my entire childhood! Oh the memories. So nostalgic. It's the most Japanese of them all that's why I love it so much. Even character models look so much cooler here despite being a bit weird. Ahead of its time in 2001 for sure! PS2 is the best.
