Thank you PhiDX for a sidestep guide that does not end in "you develop a habit for it when you play long enough". Your videos helped me from stuck in warrior to finally grinding in purple rank. I'll try to include sidesteps into my gameplay that are not just random so hopefully there is a way to develop that habit.

I stumbled upon this channel not long ago and the quality of the content and guides have been so helpful that I become conflicted when I consider pursuing a coaching session from individuals capable of doing so- as they truly value their time. It's made the learning process more approachable (I consider myself intermediate) when you make it so easy to digest and palatable. I have a hard time with the discipline of doing drills and just genuinely entering practice mode at all unless unironically I'm queued for matches and that's just where the game makes you sit before you find opponents. The replay feature also has sort of come in clutch for someone lazy like myself because I can just take control of the character's and squander the benefit I'd receive from learning how to set up the situations that get me cooked or if I want to optimize a conversion that propagated from an opportunistic response, it's a paradoxical godsend. That said, I'm very grateful for you and other content creators who drop gems like these and willfully distribute such valuable insight. It is truly appreciated as I navigate the amalgams of concepts and skills that embody tekken, my beloved hobby. TL;DR Thank you PhiDX, & Algorithm- do ya thang!

this really cleared things up. ss evasion window ending when youre too plus wasnt something I even considered. I had also heard to increase your odds is to input your ss as close to their attack button input as possible since attacks apparently stop their assigned tracking once you press attack and not directional inputs. great video

It’s all relative. Use frame data wasn’t a thing until SF4 on PC. Before then, you would have to take notes on characters, controlling the 2p side with a friend or sibling and experiment. Either that or you would simply rely on feel and technique as you mentioned. But as initially stated, it’s relative. So if you didn’t have frame data, then your opponent didn’t either, so any deep knowledge on the game wasn’t available.

I’ve been playing tekken for a long time now, and sidestepping has for the majority of my life been fully left up to my intuition. It’s always good to go back and listen to the actual science behind it, and get a refresher course on the RPS game that you are forcing. I also never knew about the -5 rule either. Good shit

This is what I've been looking forward to learning about. Most of my scraps are very linear back and forth exchanges and it would be nice to deviate from that more. I never really know when it's safe to step so the bit about what frame advantage/disadvantage works was nice to see.

i recently watched a video on small tekken and it basically had this whole thing has the basis for an offensive game. small pokes into sidesteps, to try and open your opponent. i feel this is coming at a good time in my development. ive reached purple with victor, but am facing blues that know how to punish everything that got me to where i am 😆. i knew i needed to play safer, i just didnt know what that was. now i do. thanks as always phi.

This came at the perfect time for me, I spent a few hours last night testing sidestepping basic jabs and df1s at different frame situations and it took me at least 40 minutes just to get a feel for that against 2 characters. Hopefully the knowledge from this video will speed up that process in the future, what would we do without Phi.

One thing to remember is that many pokes have different length recovery animations. Sidestep can be buffered, but for some moves, you need to input the step later as their stun animation is so long. Go to practice mode, set bot to block and set bot to punish with jab. Now you can test all your pokes and step after it was blocked to find optimal step timing. Same practice helps with your pushback moves and backdash. Backdash can’t be fully buffered so it needs even more timing practice to be perfect. In both cases block and confirm and then whiff punish. It’s a good way to learn whiff punish on reaction. And keep grinding to get better when waiting for games. T8 has full lab mode when waiting.
