Microsoft has to understand that once we power users start going to linux, and get confortable there, we are not coming back.

I expect it won't just be the power users. On Linux (lets use Mint as an example), I can have a copy of firefox to watch all all the cat videos I want and there is a solitaire game. That covers 99.9% of what a computer is really used for and it doesn't need a TPM chip.

Imo Microsoft is on a power trip where they think "we can do whatever we want and you'll use our product anyway because you're dependent on our software". The coercion they put their users through is insane, forcing them to sign into a Microsoft account, making it difficult to add local accounts, locking the UI withoutgiving any option to change it & frequently breaking 3rd party apps that try to let power users customize stuff, excessive telemetry, and syncing all your data into their overprices cloud services, that on top of years of legacy code baggage, inconsistent UI design with like 2 context menus and 3 half-baked settings menus. Ignoring how evil it is, they don't realize that more and more apps are cross platform or have decent open source alternatives. In the short term this stuff works but in the long term they'll lose their audience once everyone finds out it's cheaper and better to just use linux.

@@s1nistr433 The inconvenient truth. They can virtually "behind-hop" millions of users because they - can. Been observing this behaviour since Windows XP and they're not going to stop. Thankfully the process has been very slow, giving Linux developers enough time to make Linux better and more user friendly, which it is for about a decade now, but constantly getting better. One of the things I had to get used to with Linux is updating. Always hated updates on Windows, or changing the OS. Linux Debian, I installed it in 2013 and it's still running perfectly. The one that gets me is that Microsoft, with the Windows 11 24H2 update, will be automatically applying Bitlocker encryption for all volumes on your device. Happens during the Windows install process but supposedly when you update an existing 23H2 system to 24H2. I DO NOT want my devices to have Bitlocker encryption on them, I have no need for that to occur and really, really hate that MS is making that an automatic/mandatory thing.
@KangMinseok

People often buy big, expensive high-resolution monitors *because they want more usable screen space*. Not usually due to having the visual cognition of a two-year-old. Then we have MS and the majority of current website creators tabletifying everything, scrolling down umpteen times to see content which should fit on an old 640x480 VGA display. … It's somewhat akin to fitting a sports car with the same engine as a 49cc scooter. Even with "printer-friendly" stuff e.g. statements, now it's triple line spacing with tiny fonts and acres of white-space. Requires FOUR sheets of paper? It could easily fit on ONE.

Desktop OSes are trying to figure out where they fit in and who their target market it as the landscape has changed. People who are not creating content, which is the majority, are rapidly moving to mostly using their phone or tablet when not at work. I've seen this with those in my own family who are not power users or PC gamers, they spend way more time on small screens devices than desktops. This is huge shift over the last ten years. Windows should be focusing more on the power users, business users, and PC gamers. Windows home as it stands is becoming irrelevant.

That's right. Desktop computers aren't nearly as popular as they were during the noughts and early 10s. A modern household can absolutely do away with WIndows if they have a smart TV (Android), Playstation console(s), several smart phones and pads that run iOS and/or Android. Unless you're using the computer for content creation - music, pictures, and videos, you don't need it.

As an IT admin who manages a Windows environment for around 250 end users I can honestly say: Windows 11 CONSTANTLY gets in the way of me doing actual work. Edge takes over PAID FOR copies of Adobe reader pro CONSTANTLY. It always tries to take away prefered browsers and put Edge in their place. It installs 3 different versions of Teams (with out my permission) even though we need Teams (work or school) to do parts of our job. When MS office fails, it takes down the entire OS with it causing me to have to re-image the PC which is hours of work for me, and hours of lost work for the end user. Win 7 let us choose what updates we needed, Win 11 forces them on us no matter what. When I set up a new Win 11 install for a new employee, I have to: Uninstall about 10-12 apps that are not needed in a business world Disable UEFI Encapsule Updates from the BIOS Jump through hoops to get local user accounts to work deny MS account control about a half dozen times so MS doesn't take full control of the PC be completely mercilessly attacked by unwanted windows updates.

I jumped off the Windows Wagon when the first foreshocks of ads being experimented with in the file browser hit us. I switched to Linux then, and it's been interesting to say the least. (Using a newbie distro, Mint, for reference.) Certain things are ridiculously easy in Linux where I had some resistance in Windows. Things like recognizing printers is done seemlessly on Linux where if it sees the device on your network it will just add it to usable devices when you go to print. I've never had an easy time setting up printers on Windows. Another odd thing was I decided to install Microsoft Office 07 under Wine, and it gave me no hassle at all over my key. I've used this software cd/key since around 2008, and when I upgraded to Windows 10 it REALLY did not want me to be able to activate it. I ended up just having to leave the key in the software, keep using it while the activation timer kept giving me warnings, and eventually it gave in and just gave me my software activation. No such fuss on Linux. Gaming on Linux really brings me back to my early days of computers for me (early 2000's in my case) where you can get most stuff to work, but you're going to have to work a little bit for it. If you stick to Steam it's really easy, but it gets more complicated when you want to run older games or mods. Thankfully the tricks you learn to get one game working will probably apply to many others. That sense of discovery really takes me back to when computers were new and exciting to me, as I didn't have everything quite figured out, and the possibilities of what the machine in front of me could do seemed endless. The biggest downside of Linux for me is definitely the hard incompatibilities. There have been certain pieces of hardware that I initially thought I wasn't going to be able to run, like my GOXLR or my PCIe capture card, but with some headache I was eventually able to get running in some capacity. The biggest hurdle being, like you said, some of the creative apps not working fully or at all on Linux. One example for me being Vegas Pro. It's not supported on Linux, and only some older versions can run under Wine, and they come with big compromises. My options then are either to go without it, keep a windows install, or learn a new editing suite. The third option is probably what Ill end up doing, but I know thats a huge timesink and ball of frustration that I have to get through right off the start. I do hope more people come to Linux. I don't think it will ever be the dominant OS, but I could see it being the one gamers use if it were to ridiculously easy to setup in 99% of games (right now it's probably 70% thanks to steam), and if the performance gap on Windows it has for games grew too big for gamers to ignore.

I have been using Linux since Microsoft broke OS/2 Warp because I did not want to go to Windows 95. I have worked as a Linux Operations Admin with a DevOps team in the past so I am pretty expert with it. Have you tried setting up a VM in VirtualBox for those apps that absolutely need Windows to work? I use a VM to run Quicken because what Linux is really missing is a good personal finance manager. And I also have to use the VM to watch English Premier League Football (Soccer) on Peacock because they do an OS check and Peacock refuses to run on Linux because of "support issues". Never mind that ever other freaking streaming service runs great on Linux. But I have to admit that I keep a Win 10 PC around for gaming and resource-intensive stuff like video editing. However, once W10 goes EOL I will probably get rid of Windows on the PC and just use VMs for those rare times I need to use Windows for something.

People don't realize that Microsoft has to remove features and rewrite the code in a more modern format before it gets put back into the operating system. Windows is a work in progress as they rid itself of ancient code and incorporate features back into the operating system. Before they add the feature back in they will question it's inclusion according to Telemetry data, beta testers and other in-house decision. Too bad the people who stop the Telemetry data are basically not voting for the features that they want.

I pin my apps to the start menu and only have the running ones on the taskbar with their titles and everything - like I said - uncombined. That's a true desktop experience. Dating back to Windows 7 I thought it was a terrible idea to combine them in terms of efficiency. You can't tell what the tile is, and if there are multiple instances there is an extra click you have to do. Never been a fan of docks and these kinds of things. But yeah - totally agree 50px (or however big) taskbar is such a waste for a desktop.

It's a big problem that they are just removing stuff that they don't want the home user messing around with. The Power users use those "old school" tools and even old console commands because it's faster than clicking loads of boxes on/off. Ask any professional how do I do this the easiest way and you get the story about loading the console and do it manually or install putty. EVEN that stuff is 20+ years old its still faster than using a graphical interface. If they want to keep the power users interested, they have to actually UPDATE that old NT code and still allow power users to access these tools. I don't have a problem with this being hidden on my normal user profile, but I still want to have a power user account when I need to use these tools to help people fix a botched up windows install or get access to all their stuff hidden by some malware and getting it backed up before you erase the system and do a clean install. P.S I'd be happy to see some updated Power toys. Those were so great tools in old days when we were just getting used to work with a graphical environment

Man, taking away features/options, especially when it comes to customisation, has been SO MUCH W11's MO since day one. Combining and labeling taskbar shortcuts? Options that have been around since- 95, unless I'm mistaken? Yeah, that was gone day 1 if you remember. I'd argue many of the apps like Start11 are where they are now because of this exact type of idiocy of MS. Taskbar menu also completely gone, along with drag-and-drop into running programs. Same goes for pinning things to Start. They made a separate "smart" recommendation section, but right clicking on pinned shortcuts there? No more accessing that app's MRU list to directly open a file from there (even though the same thing works from the all apps list - which, btw, who had the bright idea to move THAT button all the way to the top right of that ginormous Start window?!)... I used to have Windows Update pinned to there, but in 11, that can't be done - hey, at least Network is a pinnable "folder", apparently (lol). Or the Downloads folder (er, the Downloads folder template, defined and appearing in ten billion separate places) being forcibly grouped by date - who the hell thought THAT was a good idea?! And this is where I'd argue telemetry ain't worth jack. They claimed all these changes were made based on telemetry data, and yet they were forced to spend YEARS (imagine that, a giant like MS needs years to do this) to put stuff like uncombine+label shortcuts back in, because the hate for the change they made was that bad. Discontinuing the snappy, lightweight Calendar+Mail apps to replace it with the "new" Outlook, which is basically just a window with the webpage, and you can't even directly launch Calendar anymore? Nobody asked for that, it's only so that they push more ads. In the OS we paid for, like you said. Hell, they force people to use a Microsoft account - but then it can't even keep you logged in, I notice the login warning in Edge all the time, Xbox and MS websites want me to log in all the time (account management, Office, OneDrive, etc), yes, despite the setting to actually have that done automagically.... and hell, in so many places, it fails to even display my profile picture, even though it's safely saved in my account. They claim all these changes are for security, but that goes right out the window (pun not intended) if you read up on how many security issues W11 has had in its few years so far. They claim it's for "ease of use" or whatever stupid PR spin they put on that, but then it's exactly the basic everyday usage that drives me up the wall due to how illogical it is and how many extra mousing around I need to do. (Let's not even mention setting default apps....) It's like the entire dev team was replaced with a bunch of newborns who've never even seen, much less used, any version of Windows at all in the past, what, four decades now? Absolutely incredible - that part the most where they already committed most of this same crap with W8 just a few years ago and had to backtrack all of it because it was such a hot mess. It's like they learned absolutely nothing at all. Identity crisis? Maybe, but I'd say it's just the symptom of a lack of direction. How widespread touchscreen devices with Windows are at all? I've no idea, from where I am it's more a niche than anything else. But MS wants that too. And who knows what else. The fact that they once again fail to realise that the "one size fits all" mentality doesn't work is just bloody unbelievable... especially considering the vast amount of telemetry they supposedly have! Sorry for the long rant, I guess you could say I was triggered by all the perfect points you brought up. 🙇🏻‍♂

I use preview builds to check whether our apps still run and to see what we have to update in case there is something we have to. It's why it's a preview. This usually doesn't work without any bugs and other issues. But yes, I agree that Microsoft should be way more customizable and I can see that Linux is getting much better there. But still, Linux lacks so many things for certain users, it's still not a choice and won't be for many years to come. My last reinstall, an issue appeared the day after i installed a fresh windows, it was nothing serious, the images / musics /document shortcuts were broken and i could'nt find a way to fix that really simple issue, it was the straw that broke the camel back. I spent lots of effort to improve my knowlege on linux (that i already had on an older portable computer before ) and progressively spent more time on my linux partition until i heard about virtual machine and GPU passthrough. Then i could just use a VM to keep a small windows to use the windows-only work software and i can just back up and restore the image everytime an update break something without spending hours of backup. I've been the happyest on my computer since then, and seeing everyting that microsoft does with telemetry, changing ui , pushing useless crap and ads, I never looked back . The main thing that still tethers me to Windows (-whichever) is two-way radio programming software; the oldest of which still requires real mode DOS and physical serial ports. Some of this has been handled (slowwwley); some slightly newer radios require me to run 32 bit Windows in a VM. I expect I'll end up putting 64 bit Windows (air-gapped) in a VM on Debian here eventually for the newest stuff. Some of the newer Kenwood radios MUST phone home to authenticate the software so those are likely on the chopping block (unless someone hacks the license to not need to phone home). The point I'm making is that I'll be bailing Windows at the first opportunity.

Windows 10 LTSC IoT has support until 2032 . . . I stay on that version for the time being! I don't want or have any need for windows 11, i think 11 is the new ME, Mistake Edition!

I've been having a pretty good time on Ubuntu Linux so far with Steam's Proton (just trying out Linux for the first time). Most Windows games seem to "just work" with no tinkering required. Windows is such an annoying, intrusive, and privacy-invading OS. Steam did a great job turning Linux into a gaming OS.

Eeech, thank you for convincing me that staying away from Windows 11 was the best decision I have ever made. Does it even have *any* feature or advantage over Windows 10? Hopefully I can keep using Windows 10 until they come out with Windows 12, that continues the pattern of good Windows -> bad Windows -> good Windows releases

The only 2 things stopping Linux from taking over is the crappy closed source GPU drivers and the major design apps like from Adobe, Autodesk, etc. It is 100% possible to create a powerful ARM based workstation running professional apps on Unix as Apple already does

Thank you for the video. You are so right. No taskbar on the top anymore... WHY? Why is it not possible to move a program over the taskbar? Windows is getting worse every new version :(

Windows 11 for me was so buggy, got so bad it wasn’t detecting my drives so I decided to go back to windows 10 and now I just get a bunch of errors with windows update and I can ignore them, but all my drives show up 😅

Quicklaunch. I still pin tasks, but only the apps that are ALWAYS opened. Quicklaunch toolbar is for those apps I open often, but they don't stay open. Microsoft has buried it, and I'm guessing it's gone in 24H2 :(

24:29 True that! The mobile UI designers ruined the desktop OS!
@SpaceCadet4Jesus
@SpaceCadet4Jesus 4 ай бұрын
Microsoft had the bright idea that they were going to share UI between the desktop and a mobile device. So they would develop hardware like the Windows tablet which was an abysmal failure. On the mobile front, Microsoft will never upset Google's and Apple's hold. Microsoft should just continue to focus on desktop, cloud and server operating system. Thankfully enough people screamed bloody murder about the tile interface that it was finally removed. Whoever sold them on the idea of a tile interface that could be shared between the mobile and the desktop environment probably made a quick million but I think Microsoft should sue them and get that million back.

I would love to see Windows with the KDE Plasma UI. And add the file manager that we want like Dolphin or Nemo. Won’t ever happen, but it would be cool.

No offense, but you might want to brush up on the difference between window managers and desktop environments - saying Linux has Windows Managers and then listing Budgie, XFCE etc. is misleading and might get new users confused... Also, as others pointed out, NT is the kernel, not the 'graphical user interface'.

Your comment on FL Studio made my heart sink; I'm seriously considering switching to Linux but doing some research shows that FL Studio doesn't have a native Linux installation, and software plugins for FL Studio wouldn't work either. As a hobbyist musician this is terrible news for me, since I really love FL Studio and Linux. Very sad that we can't get them together

45 seconds into the video, and the point about the managers is great. And I will have to agree about Windows 7, at least Pro SP1 was pretty usable. But, XP Pro SP3 was more stable, especially in the networking area. Windows 10 was an improvement over 8, but never came up to the level of 7 SP1. I used Windows 7 Pro for a bit, mostly for repairing other Windows systems, but I switched mainly to Linux and OS X back in 2006. OS X went to crap with Lion. As to my comment about Windows 7 Pro and networking, we had a beast of a machine at the ISP I worked for, it monitored all of our switches, backbone, APs and some customer premise equipment, and when you would reboot the machine, it would scramble the net masks on the network interfaces, and you had to go back into each one and correct it, so updating and rebooting that machine was something that was a chore. Before it was upgraded to 7 from XP Pro SP3, we never had that problem.

The change from 8 to 8.1 and to 10 showed that MS understand their users and returned or made better features the "power users" wanted. It feels like different people are in charge now and don't care about supporting these workflows.

Windows NT isn't the graphical interface. It's THE operating system. Windows GUI is called Windows Shell and it's been rewritten multiple times before The identity crisis of Windows is caused by constant changes in Windows leadership. What you see now isn't that though. It's them getting serious about modernising the OS and the do that in the scorch earth style. However, after recent changes some Microsoft people said that they don't like how Windows 11 UI ended up and want some changes. Microsoft is removing legacy GUI components hence they block Explorer Patcher which works by enabling these components. Even now if you reenable Windows 10 legacy taskbar in 24H2 then it won't display correctly anymore because it will lack the system tray Start11 is basically its own GUI shell like Cairo A lot of lacking features like in File Explorer are results of them being rewriting these apps in newer APIs. They didn't remove those features on purpose

Fun fact: there used to be many window managers for Windows! Like Litestep! or 3Dc! There was even a project to bring KDE natively to Windows at some point. It's all gone now. I do so many things on Linux, I use Windows for games that can't run under Linux because of anticheats. But I do most things in text terminal... :( Also unpopular opinion: Windows 8.1 was WAY better than Windows 7, except start menu. Why? Responsiveness. Windows 8 has been written with system and UI responsiveness in mind, specifically because it was meant to run on ultra-low end devices.

1:02 I love that analogy! Mind you, I find Windows 7 and Windows 10 more in the “bad manager” side of the spectrum, intervening too much. The biggest example that comes to mind right now is stealing focus. Except for alerts that I need to respond to, like security warnings or needing a password [as opposed to notifications that I can choose to ignore], the OS should _never_ move my focus to a different window or control, or put another window in front of where I’m working. Windows 10 does it all the time. Probably the one that bugs me the most is when I launch an application and then switch back to whatever I was working on while the new one opens. And that new one opens a window in front of what I’m trying to do. So I switch back to my current task, and when the launching application spawns another new window, it opens in front of what I’m working on. I switch back to my current task, and a few seconds later the launching application spawns yet another window that opens in front of what I’m doing. The OS should know that I backgrounded the launching application, and therefore keep any other windows it spawns or subprocesses it launches also in the background. macOS understands this. At least some Linux shells/DEs understand this.
