Tektronix set up a plant on the Isle of Guernsey in 1958 because the residents spoke English and Guernsey had a trade agreement with the European Economic Community (predecessor of the European Union) that allowed sales of instruments to countries in Europe with reduced tariffs and shipping costs, compared to shipping from the U.S. A vintageTEK Museum visitor who had worked at Tek Guernsey said that, at the time, the island's entire economy was the Three T's: Tourism, Tomatoes and Tektronix.
