The Dan Stream rises in the Tel Dan nature reserve and is the largest and most important of the sources of the Jordan River. Following the War of Independence, a large military post was set up on the tel in order to protect Kibbutz Dan and the Dan Springs. We walk past the remains of communication trenches, active until 1976. Tel Dan is one of the largest ancient tells in Israel, with the remains of a 5000 year old city, prominent during the Canaanite and Israelite periods called Laish, which is mentioned in the Bible. The Biblical tribe of Dan migrated to this most northerly site in Israel from the Judaean plains near Joppa. Joel Kramer, SourceFlix walked us through this beautiful reserve in the springtime, we see Jeroboam’s Altar and platform for the idolatrous Golden Calf worship. We visit the mud brick Abraham Gate, an extraordinary, well preserved Canaanite entrance into the city. Further along we walk through the Israelite Gate from the days of King Ahab and Joel introduces us to the Bama/Bema Judgement Seat, just like the one used by Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem during the trials of Jesus Christ, prior to His crucifixion.
