I have an early generation CGS 2009 model. I bought it several years ago without knowing these were somewhat desirable. It’s a great and resonate pine body. Heavy for a tele at 8 pounds. Fit and finish are really nice. It came with compensated brass saddles and worn frets from being played by a studio guy in LA. I’ve completely overhauled the insides with new pots/ caps/ cloth wiring/ shielding/ input and output jacks. Put a pair of hand wound Cavalier pups in it, refret and plek. Spent way too much money on it, but it’s a GREAT guitar. Original tuners work fine. Used a scotch brite pad to de poly the neck so it’s a nice satin finish and slick. My only complaint is the neck is slimmer than I prefer. I looked at changing it out for something beefier, but decided to leave the original neck on and just replace the smaller factory frets with 6109s. A little taller. Frets feel great and help offset some of the feeling of the slimmer neck. I maybe should have just bought an American Tele for the money I spent, but i guess I am attached to this one. A fool and his money…

I have a 2015 MIM Standard Tele (predates the Player) and I replaced the 6-saddle plate with 3 brass compensated saddles on a Fender USA ashtray plate, and put on a 5-hole guard with a wood mounted neck pickup. It's sorta like a '50s Tele with a '70s neck. My other Tele is a 2019 Vintera '50s Tele and all I did to that one was put on a black guard. I have a set of compensated barrel saddles in the case. I like having a Tele with all of the '50s features without paying for a reissue. I wonder if I got two good ones LOL All I want now is one more MIM, a Road Worn Vintera '50s Tele. As far as today's presentation goes, I can barely tell that the Squier has a rougher "vibe". When I looked at a CV years ago, I was surprised how heavy a pine body can be. I don't have a preference; I could make any of them work.

Considering how simple the original Telecaster was, there must be more variations on it now than any other model! Neck profiles and radius, woods, pickup types, bridges, controls, string guides, pickguards - we’re spoilt for choice and you can always put one together that’s different again :) MIM my pick of the 3

I'm lucky in that i bought my classic vibe squier when they were built in China. After i had owned it a year or so, and reading so many things about professional set ups, i decided to have a go at doing my own set up on it. I purchased a book on how to do it, a bit risky i know, but what the hell, how hard can it be ? The result was truly amazing, it is so so easy to play now. It was great before, but out of this world now. I also fitted it with some brass adjustable compensating saddles, then more recently a pair of seymour duncan quarter pounders. As i play more blues/rock they did it for me. I've now ended up with a fabulous guitar that suits me to the ground. Recently purchased a Harley Benton DC-DLX that is much better than expected, this is going to be receiving the same treatment.

Really spot on commentary! I've got six teles,: 3 Squiers (50's,60's and 40th), two MIM (player plus and 72 classic series thinline reissue) and a China made modern player (which was originally meant to be a Squier, but they stuck the Fender logo on it). I think you really nailed the comparison on the wood, necks, pickups and hardware. All are amazing, all have shortcomings and all are definitely upgradeable.

My kids gave me a Sweetwater gift certificate for my birthday in August 2022. I used it on a CV Squier thinline tele. It was before Fender ,and others, did a price increase. Got it for $400 with a good Gator gigbag. I've got about another $400 in mods so it's around MIM money.I love how it's turned out. Not worried about any resale value. My son loves it. He will be the next owner after I'm called home.

I originally had a CV Butterscotch Blonde Tele but returned it because the string-through holes in the body didn’t align with the bridge. I then replaced it with a MIM Butterscotch Blonde Tele. Out of the box, the MIM had a faulty output jack and three high frets along the neck. Despite these issues, I believe the MIM was the better option for me, though it still wasn't perfect.

got one of each.....CV50 has Lollars....MIM has McNelly....USA Pro II has J.Shaw...all GREAT guitars. Second CV50 has Fralins...actually my favorite Tele of 7 total. Take CV50's neck pup and disconnect from the tone pot...no need of it...improves clarity and output quite nicely. Review on target! My HB TE52 has among the BEST built neck/fret boards of all of them...amazing for sub $200. Comparison: Brightier/Spankier neck pup with increased priced...all sounded nice!

Wood selection, amount of time for finishing and detailing necks and frets , quality of hardware & pick ups are the price difference justifications. A cnc router works the same way in any country.

When I watch these videos I generally turn the screen away and listen through Bose speakers. Knowing that you are rotating through the three guitars as yo play it is nearly impossible to detect a difference. That is enough to tell me that I can’t go wrong with any of them.

Your videos are awesome. Very clear comparisons and much appreciated. The Squier Classic Vibe is an amazing line. There was a big drop off in quality between the China made ones and the Indonesian ones. Not even close. The frets on my Chinese one were custom shop level. That’s not an exaggeration. I’ve had both and the Indonesian made ones were sold off quickly.

@@manonbassguitar I owned 2 Indonesian jazzmasters. Both had electrical issues and needed soldering and fretwork. Also had a Tele that needed fretwork and paint issues. The grain of the multi piece wood was always mismatched poorly. All 4 of my Chinese Classic Vibe 50s Teles were FLAWLESS and the pickups were better but that is more a preference thing. My Chinese Jazzmaster was also flawless. The one advantage the Indonesian ones have over the Chinese ones is that the Indonesian ones were always lighter. Chinese ones were heavy.

For the neck & neck/middle I liked the Squier. It had a thicker woodier sound. The other two had a lot more treble and scooped mids and not as bassy as the Squier either, I'm sure they're better in a band, but I prefer the fuller sound for sitting in the living room. On the bridge, it was the same clean, but overdriven, the Squier sounded a tad muddy, where the others sounded livelier. Don't know that I had a preference between the MIM or the American though. They both sounded good.

Love my Fender 50s Vintera Telecater which I put Brad Paisley La Brea pickups in the neck and bridge and I play that through my Hot Rod Deluxe IV that has a Weber 12F150 speaker! IM LOVING THAT COMBO

It's those Alnico steel guitar pickups. They're gonna twang no matter what variation. Video proves that point pretty well. As Nashville session guitarist Grady Martin put it "The telecaster has a tone that kills Johnson grass for 50 feet around it." Yes, all the rest depends on what the player feels good playing and cost of course.

It’s pretty amazing how bright the MIM and US neck pups sound. I actually prefer some mud on my Tele neck… the bridge is for my clean tones. But that’s because I play super high gain punk rock. It’s always interesting to see everyone’s preferences re tone. Thanks for the comparison video!

Favorite guitar I own is my 1998 vintage reissue ‘52 black guard. Best bridge pickup I’ve ever heard. Most comfortable neck I’ve ever played. Makes me wish all my guitars have vintage fret wire. I will also say, everyone knocks the 90s vintage reissues for not having accurate 50s era necks. From what I can find on the internet, ‘52 teles had inconsistent neck profiles and even the thinner 90s reissues could be vintage accurate based on the specific neck profile they spec’d it after.

I like the tint of the squire neck? I get what you are saying about the weight. I had one and it was over 10 lbs and I wasn’t working for me at that weight. Mim is always the best value! Great playing buddy!!!!

Great demos Jack. I've owned a USA tele for around 20 years, it's great, it feels like the real thing, I'm extremely happy with it. Meanwhile, last year I bought a 70s thinline tele classic vibe based on a hunch it could be OK. It's fantastic! The build quality is amazing and the sound is spot on. Now I'm confused about guitar origins! 🤣

I have a MIM standard Telecaster, it's fit and finish easily match my USA FSR Stratocaster. The only mod I did to the Tele was to change the pickups. The ceramics seemed too loud and lacked the articulation I was looking for. I replaced them with Fender 64' vintage.

Im not done w the video so he may cover this but in my experience the sounds on the lower end are often good. Over time, the lower quality hardware and workmanship are what can create a challenge when you go low end. Squire is a student guitar. If you want to play it 20-40 hours a week and tour w it, you are doing to be making adjustments.

The discontinued Squier Affinity was my first Tele. Not a bad entry. I have a CV Thinline 70s now. I have two Strats, MIM Deluxe Player's and a MIJ Squier from the mid '00s. Both great guitars. I feel no need to spend any money on a USA model. The DP has USA hardware as the Mexican and US factories are always swapping parts with each other depending on their needs!

I've got one of them earlier old-schoolChinese Cv50's. It's great. The fretwork even is better than a lot of the Mexican or sometimes even US ones I laid my hands on. HOWEVER: the frets are soft. They wear down way earlier. Still great guitars, but frets would seem to me the last thing you skimp out on. Because they're pretty costly to replace. Anyway, great guitar (great pickups as well) but you know.. you get what you pay for. Fret material is where they cut costs. (Kinda silly: they really put attention to how the frets are finished, but they won't last long)

I think they're really good. I had an American Performer Stratocaster for a while which was an awesome guitar. I have a modified American Special Telecaster which is the model that preceded the Performer series, and I love it.

You can pick up American made Teles for around a grand, not much more than a new Mexi. What I always look for is a lighter guitar, American made seems to have more of them.

love the tele, dont like the pickups in some models. Texas specials or fender stacked noiseless are great options. Also Duncan hot rails and Dimarzio tone zone T with a strat pro track in the neck for heavy stuff. (requires a new pick guard with a strat neck pickup route). The Mexican Tele is the best bang for the buck, just replace the ping tuners. But great guitars.

I know for sure I am older than you 😂 I have been playing guitar and piano since I was 6-7 and I am 44 going to be 45 soon been playing since I was 6 years old and I have and played many and have many tele’s and you did amazing.. besides the Jimmy Page Dragon & Mirror custom models I have because he is my guitar hero.. I have 4 Teles’s & you did an amazing job showcasing each and making each sound good with cost and tone and build quality 🤘🏻🎸🤘🏻 I am blues/Rock background and you nailed it and glad I subscribed to you and found you by accident on recommendation honestly.. I recently switched my tele to 10s and while thru body sounded amazing except for bends which would always be harder than normal, top loaded made it have less tension, easier to bend, and have a general bouncyness that I usually associate with telecaster sound. Just my two cents hoping this helps someone out there in that eternal search for that "sweet" tone.

I have 3 Telecasters, an AO 50's,a MIM (payer or something, honestly not fussed) HH and a old "beater" CIJ that ive upgraded pretty well every removable part on including fitting EMG's. I love them all, the MIM (newest) is the only stock guitar, the bridge pick-up on the USA was changed ASAP as it was yeah nah, not acceptable. The JDM one is what i play the most, i do prefer the neck profile on the US one.

The Squier was warmer and seemed to have more output. Tone wise, I liked it. The issue I have with them is the amount of work it takes to make them really playable. That's why like you, I'd go for the Mexican. The tone was similar to the squier, but I'd imagine it was much more playable out of the box.

Absolutely. The Squier actually frustrates me in that regard because the tone is so on par, but the playability is so lacking.

My 2021 CV Strat was supposed to be replaced with my MIM. But the Squier is just too good and Better in some ways than the Fender. You’ll be shocked to hear that I didn’t need my arm twisted, to keep both. 😅

Keep in mind, the Squire CV’s went from China production to Indonesia so it seems that’s where the said changes came into play. Here’s where it may get confusing, traditionally, Indonesian guitars are a step up from China ones. But with the CV’s it’s kind of the reverse of that. Granted, these are high/fast production guitars so it may depend more on the exact guitar you get your hands on, but the consensus seems to be that the early Chinese Tele CV’s were better. 🤷‍♂️ I snagged a used China CV Tele and had to fix the bridge alignment…but otherwise I’m extremely impressed with it. It’s a bit heavy (8.1lbs)but not crazy for the level and a quite beautiful pine body. I think I’ll keep it. It’s not far from my MIM Baja Tele in all honesty. But my American Special is still my #1.

Mexican Standard just prior to the player series is the Holy Grail for me ! Reason being that series had run for about 7 years and Fender kept upgrading them until they became terrific ! Mind you I like ceramic p/ups thought I would confess that.

First off, I’m not a Tele’ guy, I have 4 Strats but have ventured into Tele territory a few times. I think Leo got it right, it’s so basic you can’t screw it up. No matter what level of Tele you get it sounds good. In your comparison I actually noticed the US one sounds better at clean tones to my ears than the others, but as soon as you stick any overdrive in that becomes hardly noticeable. Ive had Mex Teles in the past, I have a 2020 CV 50’s right now, but I never fancied the cost of spending the extra for a US one just for the clean tone. That said, I’ve always WANTED to like the Tele, it’s just that when I get one it sits on a wall.

I'm surprised that nobody is talking about the Squier classic vibe 70s thinline limited edition Tele. It's a Fender product with block inlays and neck binding. Not that those things make the guitar better to play, but it looks pretty cool and it's a huge departure from the norm for fender. There's 3 regular videos and two shorts on all of KZbin and none of those mentions anything about the binding or inlays. Why is nobody talking about this? The only other bound fender neck I've seen are the ~$700 channel bound necks on Sweetwater. I'm thinking of buying one but I currently don't have a Tele and I'm torn between the classic yellow mim and the thinline....but the thinline is an HH configuration. Maybe both! But I think the thinlines are almost sold out, and they're $449 with $45 off so $404 which isn't bad. Decisions decisions....

My first decent guitar was a Mexico 60s style Telecaster that my mom got for me a long time ago and maybe one of the American made 1950s reissues would be slightly better but I would never buy one unless I was primarily a Fender player or if I had an insane amount of money to burn because the difference in quality is almost negligible from what I've heard and the difference in price is massive

Great comparison! And sweet playing. What’s your opinion of the current players Tele. I was interested in the Vintera 50s modified with the twisted neck pickup . Until I realized it had a 7.25 radius and baseball bat neck.

I found t really hard to choose a tele in this price range (talking mid hundreds, the original II is too rich for my blood). The Squiers were all too heavy and one on demo in a shop (!) had a too deep cut nut slot on the a string, causing fret buzz even though the action was set much too high on the low end and a. Put me right off. I loved the vintara but could not get on with the rounded fretboard. I am not a great player with a tendency to tug the strings down and it was too easy for me to pull the high e right off the edge. In the end I went for a FGN Iliad j-standard. Not a true tele but close enough, that fitted my hand and my budget and is a sweet player.

Cheaper guitars are less quality on purpose. Everything about it is cheaper. My opinion is that a MIM Fender should be exactly the same as a USA model. Same hardware and electronics. It should only be more affordable because of lower labor costs and more affordable wood. Otherwise, why even compare models.

This has been an age old question on youtube. It's nice to get simple comparisons with clean tones. Seems almost impossible to hear any difference. Seems like the American is brighter than the CV, and notes sustain more, but I like my CV Tele a lot. I'm fairly sure that American Original 50s Telecasters are generally unchambered. And don't have gold hardware. That one you are playing is a limited edition with gold hardware and chambering.

As a life-long Gibson player (when it comes to electrics), I am considering getting some kind of a Tele just for fun, but I don't want a project. I have gone through the project-guitar thing a few times when I was younger. I am old now. So what do I have to pay for a T type guitar that does not immediately need fret work, and that has decent controls that at least work and don't fall apart?.

I just ordered a American vintage ii 72 telecaster thinline. Now you have me worried about quality. Is there anything I should look out for quality wise. Just getting back into playing. Haven't had a electric guitar for 20 years or so. Love the looks and sound of the American tel in the vid.

No, not at all - I'm simply comparing them and bringing up a critique about modern corporate practices. I personally think Fender has cut corners with newer models, but as I mentioned in the video, it's still Fender, and Fender still make a high quality instrument.

Best value for a tele??? Okay first get a Time Machine, go back to 2019 and buy a used AM standard for like 900ish bucks…. Ah these new prices are killing me. I feel like I’m priced out of buying new guitars. I get inflation and all, at some point it just feels hard to stomach.

The Classic Vibe series are the BEST thing Squier has ever came up with! In the 90s you couldnt give a damn Squier away! They were absolute GARBAGE! Not so much anymore!

all modern Fender and Squier guitars are trash. I’ve tried to buy everything from the classic vibe to the American pro ii in the last year and they were all returned as defective. Instead, I’ve had to buy second hand older guitars to get decent quality. Fender has the worst quality control in the industry right now.

That's right, you're now paying more for less, and that's definitely true for the amps as well...extra features just don't compensate for inferior build quality
