She was raped for 10 years and he only got 20 years in prison? And the other only 3 years? Serious?
@ruthgiles8926Күн бұрын
20 years is the maximum the court can impose for rape in France. It's part of the problem that this case has highlighted. The onus is always on the women to 'prove' that they didn't ask to be raped, to prove that they were raped, and to face being called a liar in court. Even in the highly unlikely event that they get as far as a conviction, the rapist gets a wrist slap. It's the same the world over. Gisèle hopes that this case will let the shame change sides.

Gisèle Pelicot should be named Person of the Year by Time and other national/international publications. She is setting a new course -- bringing attention to horrific behaviour and shortfalls in French legislation, and turning the shame back on the abusers by standing up for herself and all women who have been sexually assaulted.

How is the maximum sentence only 20 years! It's not only the UK that has pathetic sentencing. Every single one of them should have got the maximum sentence available irrespective of the gravity of the individual crime. To think that some of them can walk away without any more time to serve is shocking. What an incredibly brave woman.

Of course it affects men. Who's doing the raping?
@ruthgiles8926Күн бұрын
It doesn't just affect men, it's men's problem. Women cannot fix this, it's not women who are raping women and turning a blind eye to rapists. Men have to fix each other. This guy knew he could get away with this - he went online advertising for rapists in the area, knowing no-one would stop him, report him, interfere in any way. He knew that he had a market for rapists and could get away with it by drugging her. He was right. For ten years. He was only discovered by accident when he was caught filming up women's skirts in the local supermarket and the police went through his phone.

It's unrealistic to expect much to change in patriarchal cultures. Even these sympathetic and anti-rape people are talking in very careful language about this. I'm a U.S. citizen, born and lived here most of my life. That kind of deep change is complex & each generation teaches the next. The word "uncomfortable" doesn't belong in this discussion.

"Shame swapping sides" has to happen BUT it HAS to start with MEN - yes not "all" men however it only has to be ONE man who does this to create fear in women so it MUST be men - perhaps it starts with just one - to do the most work in changing men's attitudes.
