I work in the Information Technology field and it is always a privilege to have the opportunity to see how parts of my job, today (Voice Over IP & Internet Telephony, etc) were performed, in the past.

It really is amazing how far communication has come along since this film in the 1940's. Even from the 1980's to today, the leap is incredible!

4:52--Those keypulsing sounds are the forerunners of the later touch-tones. 5:35--So "312" was the Chicago area code before there was such a thing as dialing direct by long distance.

DTMF. Isn't it?

DTMF wasn't officially implemented until 1963. However, it is obviously based on the same concept. The only real difference being that instead of an Operator sending Dual-Tone Instructions to the Circuit Switch the Caller's Phone itself is able to Output those Dual Tone Instructions, as the Caller Dials.
