Plutarch writes that the women of Argos managed to push back two separate attacks of the Spartans and inflicted heavy casualties on them. "The result was that they repulsed Cleomenes with great loss, and the other king, Demaratus, who managed to get inside ... and gained possession of the Pamphyliacum, they drove out." I think the version of the story where Spartans supposedly didn't want to fight women and left without battle was just an attempt of Spartans to save face for having been defeated by enemy women. More likely the overconfident sexist Spartan men underestimated women and attacked with no tactical plan then got overwhelmed once they entered the city with angry women throwing rocks at them and attacking them from all sides. In such situation their phalanx would be useless and they would be out of their comfort zone, so it's perfectly plausible Argive women could rout them. Of course you can imagine this must have been devastating for the patriarchal men of Greek society, so they had to bring up some excuse haha
