@@roidetesreves2298 nobody said oppressed, she clearly just said struggles. and the struggles are most definetly real because most black women go through the same things collectively. and look into that crowd. most of the actors there are white people. in the us acting scene it is a white dominated field and many black people dont get lead roles. to put it into perspective for your small, adolescent brain, halle berry is the only women of colour to be awarded a best actress award at the oscars. and that is from 100 years of those award ceremonies. poc are not seen as regularly as white people and thats just facts . representation is such a big deal an many young girls dont see people like them on the screen that often because they are poc.dont try to silence others because you ont understand what they go through.

Just saw a comment angrily asking why she had to bring race into it... the reply function doesn't seem to be working but here is my response. Why not bring her race into it? Yes, she won it based on her ability, not her race. But as a black actress she feels like she has been deprived of the opportunities white actors/actresses have. So she's speaking about something that matters to her. So it is certainly not 'some stupid colour thing' (actual quote from said comment I was unable to reply to). Not to her anyway and not to anyone that's been given unequal treatment.

If you never give a person a chance to prove themselves because of the color of their skin, you will never see their full potential. Even if she hadn't gotten that Emmy, there are plenty of award shows for people of color to award their own.

I loved Viola since I watched "How to get away with murder". Recently, I did research about Viola Davis and of course, she is pure talent. Started her career from 1996 , and won many awards. But why is this her first nomination after almost 20 years of acting career at this point(2015) ? This drives me to research more and I was extremely surprised that Viola is first woman that won an Emmy for the category: "Lead Actress in a Drama Series". The Emmy Academy rarely nominate black women but I can't blame them, as Viola say it, "You can not win an Emmy for roles that simply not there". Redefine the standart of beautiness, sexiness and leading women is most acerted thing she said in her speech. Only redefine those preconceptions, the true talent will shine. Great speech!

I have been watching "How to Get Away With Murder", and have been so deeply impressed with Ms. Davis's incredible talent. Any scene she is in is positively riveting due to her depth and presence, as well as her ability to make us love a "messy" character. And, I hear this speech and feel the truth in every word Ms. Davis spoke. I am so glad she won -- well deserved. Of course, we still need more equality and inclusion in this society. I hope that the runaway success of HTGAWM will show the people in charge that if you write a good enough story and have powerhouse performances like Ms. Davis's, there is an audience ready and delighted to eat up shows starring POC, mature women, LGBTQ characters, etc. I also believe that such shows have a positive effect on society at large, so I bless the creators of this show, especially Shonda Rimes, who has done so much to present us a world that is richer and more inclusive and just flat out BETTER. Life can and does imitate art, and in the case of shows like those Ms. Rimes bring to us, it should. I happen to be white, if anyone cares, and fully understand and support Ms. Davis making this speech "about race".

Damn, maaaan!!!!!!!!!! I´m sooo utterly touched and moved by her brilliant and excellent speech!!!!!!!!!! Let me tell you something that comes straight from my heart and soul:For me it really doesn´t matter what color or race a human being has. I can totally feel you, "black people", because as you I´m a so called outsider in this world and - big surprise right here - I´m a white woman from a typical village in a rural region in Germany. I can totally relate to your issues in this society, because "they out there" treated and abused me like "they" did the same to you. So, basically it doesn´t matter from which ethnical and cultural background you come from and where you are in this world. As long as "they" won´t tolerate, accept and respect us the way we are, my dear soul sisters and brothers, we belong to the same kin. We will always be connected through our undergoing difficulties, trials and tribulations.

Taraji's so mature and wondeful. The opposite of Taylor Bitch who was so bitter when Adele won some award over her in 2013. Love it when people in the same industry support eachother!

gotta love her! and as for Ms. Taraji all that love/respect! Taraji jumped up as if she won (which in some ways she did every time a black womyn celebrates each other everyone wins!) she was right there w/ her w/ every word/emotion ...true class esp cuz she was also up for the award, nothing but love!

I don't get why people say Tatiana Maslany was robbed. Viola was just breathtaking in HTGAWM. She totally deserved that.

Speaking as a white woman, I don't get why the whole audience didn't get up and do a standing ovation, or at least looked more like they gave a damn. Viola Davis tackled the racial divide of our time in this industry with such grace and truth. She's a great orator.
