So very happy I am that I listened to the rendering of Sri Thyagaraja’s superb kriti, Telisi Rama chintanato namamu, in Poornachandrika raga, by the great vocalist Sri Nedunuri, sung at an appropriate Kaalapramana (in Madhyama kaala). Also, Sri Nedunuri sings with bhakti, so bhaava has automatically come through. There is sowkhya bhaava here, which is very important. Just a few days ago, I listened to another Sangeethakalaanidhi, Sri T N Sheshagopalan, singing the same kriti at excessive speed, here on KZbin (v= 0oVoRtg5aOI0). And I still remember feeling so frustrated listening to that because singing the kriti at that speed - it sounded like Sri Sheshagopalan was singing it at 300 miles per hour! - did not sound appropriate because it just did not correspond with the meaning of the song: O mind, by ceasing all thoughts for at least a minute (nimisha) , think the name of Sri Rama, and understand the meaning (telisi) and significance of the lord : taaraka roopuni nijatatva mulanu.” Now, why would anyone sing this kriti at 300 or even four hundred miles an hour? : because the vocalist decides to ignore deliberately the meaning of the krit, that’s why. This kriti, even though it addresses the mind, is also a prayer to lord Rama. So the question is: Is there such a thing as saying a prayer very fast? I think not, because there is no such thing as a fast prayer. A fast prayer is no prayer at all. I hope vocalists will pay attention to the saahityam of a kriti and sing at proper kaalapramaana to comply with the meaning of the song. I have heard this kriti sung at an even slower kaalapramana, in vilamba kaala, and I must say that it sounded even better because that complied with the meaning of this song: Pleading with the mind to think of Sri Rama for at least one minute. Yesh Prabhu If you like this, you really ought to listen to Dr. BMK. His rendition too is apt for the lyrics as you have pointed out for Nedunuri.

@@rahulanilkumar9562 Thank you for your comment, Sri Rahul Kumar. I took your suggestion and listened to Sangeetha Kalanidhi Sri Balamuralikrishna. You are right. He sang this kriti at appropriate kaala pramaana, and in such a way that the meaning of the kriti came though. I must say that he has never been one of my favorite vocalists; but this kriti he sang very well indeed, perhaps because he knows Telugu and paid attention to what Sri Thyagaraja said. I respect him a lot, however, because of the abundant knowledge he had regarding Carnatic music. Thank you very much for your suggestion. Yesh Prabhu, Bushkill, Pennsylvania
