My first love: I was 21, she was 20. I was in my penultimate year in college. She was in her first year of seven in college. I saw this tall brunette in a crowd exiting a building. My heart missed a beat as I stared. I was not in her line of sight, yet she sensed my presence and briefly turned and glanced at me with a concealed smile. I knew instantly that somehow I would spend my life with her. (This is a long story, so if you're easily bored, leave now). Some weeks later, I saw her walking on a path parallel to mine near the college campus. I crossed over so that we had to pass each other. I smiled, she smiled back. This happened several times as her accommodation was close to mine. In the evenings I would search the floors of the college library. Then one evening I found her. I sat in a nearby cubicle, not having the courage to approach her. I saw her several times subsequently in the library. Each time she was totally focused on her study materials, but she would nod and acknowledge my presence as I pretended to casually whizz by. One evening, close to the end of the college year, I decided to overcome my shyness and seize the moment. The library was nearly empty, and she was alone at a large table for four. I pretended to be on my way out, then suddenly see her and swing by. I sat at the empty space at her table, my heart pounding. Her face turned multiple colours. I introduced myself. She did the same. We talked for 30 minutes or so about our families and college. We had much in common. Then, the college year ended. The next college year was my last. I saw her again in the library from time to time and we talked. Our total focus was our studies. We were both from humble backgrounds and a lot of sacrifices were being made to put us through college. Exam failure was not an option. We did not have the money, time or indeed the energy to date. As that year ended, I was finished college but she had five more years to do. A relationship was out of the question for her. I started work. Over the next five years, I had several girls in what we would now call the friend zone, but none who were special to me. I dated a few other girls, but my heart did not seem to be in it. It is only now, many years later, that I realise I was subconsciously running down the five year clock until her college was finished. I was never in contact with her. This was the '80s. There were no cell phones, there was no Internet. At the end of her final college year, I drove to the college in my newly acquired car and searched for her. No luck. I knew the tiny town of a few hundred she was from so I drove there, made some inquiries and also drew a blank. Finally, as she had an unusual surname, I decided to search the local telephone directry. There were five entries with that name. I called the one I thought was the best match. It was her cousins who gave me her family address. Heart racing and hands shaking, I called her number. Her late mother answered; she saw through my cover story and could tell I was a suitor. She giggled as she uncovered my true objective, told me her daughter was now working as an intern in the nearby city, and she promised to pass on my telephone number. A few days later, I got a call at work. It was my tall brunette from college asking how I was. I knew from the tone of her voice that my life was about to change forever. We talked for three hours straight. I asked her for a date for the following weekend. That weekend, I drove to her city, a little nervous and very excited; it was the best journey of my life. When I picked her up, she was wearing a floral patterned dress in turquoise green and maroon. She looked and acted exactly as I remembered her five years earlier. I noticed she was tense in our car ride to the restaurant I had booked. She was very nervous at dinner and hardly ate. Before I returned home, she asked me in for coffee. There, she stood over me in her little kitchen, as I sat and drank her coffee. She relaxed, standing and talking for four hours until I had to plead to drive home. As I left, I reached out to shake her hand. She pulled me in and kissed me. She had taken control of our relationship and has not relinquished it since. We married two years later and will be 30 years married next summer. We have two adult children. She told me years later the reason she was so nervous on our first date. She was shocked at how much I had matured physically and in self confidence from when she knew me in college. She feared I had outgrown her. She still has the turquoise green and maroon dress in her wardrobe and occasionally wears it. I love her more than ever and more than she will ever know. She went to bed two hours ago and will be wondering what the hell is keeping me awake.

Don't want to push any labels on you, but I just wanted to let you know that there is type of romantic orientation that's literally called being "aromantic", as in just not being interested in people romantically (it's independent from one's sexual orientation, someone might be aromantic or "aro", which means the same, and being able to feel sexual attraction or aromantic and also asexual, which means not feeling sexual attraction). Just wanted to leave it here because using and knowing specific terms like these can allow you to look for and find people with similar experience to yours, in my experience it can really help feeling seen and validated and better about one's self! My first love was when I was 18 and he was 20. He died of a fentanyl overdose almost 3 years ago on October 21st 2018 when he just turned 23. I held his hand and kissed him goodbye in his casket. She wasn't my first love, but she was the deepest love I ever felt. Now I understand why people call it "falling" in love; I couldn't help it, all I knew was that I was crazy about her and wanted to be with her. Over the years, she became home to me. Whenever we were apart, it felt like I was missing part of myself, and when we could finally see each other, I felt whole again. I never thought I would get to experience such a pure, unconditional, selfless love as the love I felt (and still feel) for her. I'll always be grateful for that experience.

My first love was someone I met in middle school. (Roughly six years ago now, and I still love her.) she was so kind and hard working and talented, and thought no one saw her. She’s like finding an old castle and realizing it’s filled with magic and wanting to stay there in the sun the rest of your life. Looking at her and hearing her be happy is like waking up to clouds and rain and knowing you can stay inside with your favorite song or show and just love life. She’s amazing, but she’s moved on. It’s a long story. She lived in Switzerland and I lived in Germany, we both spoke German and generally had a lot in common. We met first time in our early teens at a Christian summer camp in the US and she was in my cabin. I only realized I liked her at the end of the week. A year went by and I forgot about her. One year later we met by coincidence again at said camp. I fell in love all over. We came out to each other that week. After spending the whole week together I finally admitted that I had feelings for her and she felt the same way. I’ve never cried so hard in her arms that last night of camp, I realized how much she meant to me and was afraid we’d never see each other again. Later that night she snuck me out of my cabin and I had my first kiss with her on a forest trail. It was a movie scene really. We ended up dating long distance for about a year. When we broke up and she moved on, I knew that she wouldn’t be leaving my mind for a long time. A day hasn’t gone by since without thinking of her and wishing her the best.

I had my first love at age 16. It lasted for two long years. I'm 24 now. We were on good terms, friends even. We went to parties together, spent nights dancing, talking. It could have been magical. But I never told him how i felt. He had no clue because I have never even gave him the slightest hint. Months passed and I just suffered quietly in the inside. Still haven't told him. As I got older, I realised that I had to move on, so I did, but it killed me. I got into a relationship, that lasted for 4 years and I slowly forgot abut him. Never even saw him. It no longer had any affect on me. At least I thought. A few months ago we accidentally met at an event and he approached to me immediately. Asked me out for a date and I said yes. We went out and as the hours passed, somewhere deep down i felt like that feeling never really went away. We talked until the morning, laughed, told each other stories. Now we are together. It strange how it all happened I still can't really belive it. He had no idea how i felt back than, maybe it would all happened differently if I would stand up for myself. Maybe not. Who knows. The only thing that is important is to always live for the moment and don't think that your happiness depends on an other person. It is all in you! :)

Thank you for these beautiful stories. This video brought back some memories that were about my first love. 1984. Yes, I've lived a while! Him from France. Me from Australia. We were in Bali in the early 1980s. We were both in our mid 20s. The intensity of what I was feeling was breathtaking. When he told me he loved me, I was able to tell him immediately that I loved him. 3 days in. When you feel it, you know. We were both shocked but so so happy that we had found each other. The long distance thing didn't last. But our connection was never lost, even when we both went on to have relationships. Our respective kids are now similar ages to when he and I first met.
