As an American living in the UK I think it’s funny that when I ask for the time I never get an exact time. It’s always quarter past, half past, ten to, etc. Americans usually give you the exact time whereas brits always seem to round it and don’t mention what hour it is. I know it sounds funny but sometimes I’m busy for hours and don’t know the hour so when my wife says half past I’m like, “half past what?” 😂

so you americans use quarter oils instead a gallon of oil for your v8 engine but cant use quarters on a hour?
@outmywritemind17395 күн бұрын
Americans generally do say its half past 8 or a quarter until 7.

Englishmen say: What´s the time? Americans say: What time is it? There´s too much influence of american english throughout the media nowadays! Englishmen say: it is a quarter to ten. Americans say: It´s 10, 45. Englishmen say: it´s half past four. Americans say: it´s four thirty!!!

So, if it 4 : 55 am i should say fifty five to four and if it's 4 : 12 am i should say quarter past four? I'm so confused please someone correct me, thank you ❤️
@wilfhook29554 жыл бұрын
4.55 is said 5 to 5. Generally you round to the nearest five if you don’t need a precise time so would normally be said as just after ten past four. If you need a precise time you would say it as written so either four twelve am or oh four twelve if using 24 hour clock which is common.

So Americans don’t say half past, etc…? Just the exact time? I had no idea about it until now! Also, 8.34 in UK would be 8.34, not 26 to 9, right? I don’t recall it being so fancy with ‘broken’ minutes.
