I do enjoy this I also remember after the discontinuation of commercial passenger trains on May 1st 1971 The Rio Grande Zephyr remained in business for 12 more years I would like to have taken a ride on The Rio Grande Zephyr I never had the money I m curious on the of the final run of the Rio Grande Zephyr if any tears were shed

I think Union Pacific should sell the Rio Grande. Maybe BNSF may be ideal as a successor or maybe Utah Railway.

I think the Rio Grande was a great railroad though not big like Union Pacific I liked the P3 horn on the GP 35 locomotives

I dont know why even they purchase SP they choose SP over their own DRGW presence.... small but big railroads RIP Rio Grande...

Erwin Sabilala The SP was going through serious financial troubles at the time of the merger, which was part of the reason for why they merged.

It has to do with an attempted merger by the AT&SF and SP from 1984. This was shot down on two occasions - first by the ICC (forerunner to today's STB) in 1986, again on appeal in 1987. The combined company was to be SFSP (Santa Fe Southern Pacific) and the railroad was to be SPSF (Southern Pacific Santa Fe) in a merger of equals. The SFSP company was forced to divest one of the properties and sold SP to Rio Grande Industries in 1988. The company then became SFP for Santa Fe Pacific. SPSF came to stand for 'Shouldn't Paint So Fast'. SP was sold in a blowout sale to RGI, which combined the two roads and renamed to SP for the larger railroad's name value as the D&RGW - a Class 1 - was still pretty much only a regional road while SP was a transcon.

Nah, the Rio Grande Industries company (parent of the DRGW) bought the SP, and later went in with the C&NW in the biggest flim-flam of modern railroad history when they snookered the UP into paying WAY too much for all three railroads. Why? They made it look like SP might merge with the C&NW and cut UP off from Chicago. The man who was the RGI legal council for this action is the new Chief Justice of the United States. Why the SP name instead of DRGW? UP would never be afraid of D&RGW.
