Each evening at dusk, birds fly over Sungai Perak in flocks, heading home to roost on Pulau Bangau Bird Sanctuary. Bangau Island is located in River Perak off Teluk Intan town in the state of Perak, Malaysia. Watching hundreds or thousands of them flying home at dusk is certainly an amazing moment.
The river cruise journey starts at the jetty at the river bank in town. It is said that the island is home to more than 20,000 birds, including 10 species of herons and egrets. Due to their large numbers, sightings of Grey Heron, Purple Heron, Little Egret, Cattle Egret and Swiftlet are guaranteed.
The best time to visit Pulau Bangau is at high tide, just as the sun sets. This typically happens 2 days before and after the full or new moon. The deeper water allows boats to navigate around the island for a more complete experience.
