I made temp blankets for both my daughters this year doing their birth years 2002 & 2004. I made them pretty big with single crochet and size H and I hooks. I wish I had used better colors (I used Caron One Pounder skeins for affordability). I printed out yearly calendar tracker printouts for free online and wrote down all the temps then color coded with colored pencils. Then I crossed them out as I completed each row. I also wish I had planned my ends better. One blanket is still unfinished because of the nightmare experiment I turned my 2002 blanket into. I put a crocheted ruffle border on the 2004 version. I wish I had either made it fringed or woven in ends as I went…. Carrying yarn up the side a few rows and leaving loose ends were both bad ideas in the end. Eventually I want to do another temperature blanket in vintage colors for my birth year 1977, but probably not this year. I would spend more time figuring out the yarn choice to get a better color palette. I got an XXL rope basket from Amazon to hold all the yarn skeins that were currently in use (9 colors) and held the backup colors in my stash bins. Doing a historic year instead of the current year has the advantage of you knowing in advance how many rows of each color you will need so you can estimate yarn pretty easily. My blankets used about 8-10 pounds of yarn each, I think, with the most prominent colors needing 2+ pounds of yarn. Another thing is to do a gauge swatch so you can accurately plan the right width to coordinate with a 365 row length. I used single crochet because anything taller would have made the blankets far too long.

Hi Shannon!! Thank you so much for this valuable comment. I think a lot of people would get some great tips out of it. I also love that you did the birth years for the blankets, I think that makes it such a nice sentiment blanket ❤️

A very nice video! Temperature blankets are pretty fun things and the idea is so flexible and customisable, too. It doesn't even have to be a blanket, especially if a project that big is a bit daunting. A scarf is a good alternative for example, but one could probably make a loop or even a vest or sweater. My mother made herself a temperature scarf for her last year of work before her pension. That turned out pretty cool (my dad will probably get a blanket from her for his last year). And if one doesn't really want to use the weather it is always possible to track something else instead, like mood or whatever one would like.

Hi Isabel, thank you so much for your comment. I'm happy you enjoyed the video 😄❤ And yes, since posting this video all kinds of other temperature projects have come to my attention. I really love the versatility of the projects a lot. Today someone in my Facebook group posted about making a temperature blanket but instead of tracking the temperature, it would track the book genres she read through the year. Also really love that idea😄

Thank you! The year long/daily blanket project l really fancy is the Sky Scarf which involves looking at the sky at the same time each day (as daily meditation, journalling, grounding - mental health activity) The disadvantage of that one is that you do need to at least record the sky colour each day, you cannot find out months later if you miss a day (temperatures are usually available online) I would definitely do two rows and knot the ends together as a fringe. Otherwise sewing in all the ends would be a pain. The Sky Scarf has about 6 shades and they are held double so you choose two colours each day. There are also mood blankets, mental health blankets, sickness/health/pain blankets.

Wow I have never heard of the sky scrarf, that's sounds so amazing!! Now you're giving me the idea that I might need to make a video about all kinds of projects that are specifically meant for mindfulness or meditation. Thank you for you comment Helen 😁❤️

I am doing a temperature blanket in a solid granny square, three rows. The inside row is the low temperature, the second row is the high temperature and the final row is white for the border and the joining of the squares. The first day of the month is a solid white.

Hi Fem! i had heard about these temperature blankets but never paid much attention, but while I was listening to you, thinking about it as a mindfulness practice, an opportunity to meditate daily while knitting in my case, sounds interesting, I just feel I would have a hard time staying the course and actually knitting every day on the blanket. I also loved the suggestion of attaching a different meaning to the daily rows...will think about this, thanks for the prompt! 🧶

I am excited to start a temperature blanket this year! I actually bought yarn a few years ago to do one but life happened. 🙃 So, I'm finally ready to start this project. Few things I have heard about is people separating each month with a row of a main color (like white and using that as a border when its done) and also adding a metallic yarn to mark special days (birthdays, anniversaries, etc). The possibilities are endless 😊

A 7 row square or hexagon with a row for each day and then you end up with a 52 block blanket which huge but you can break in half and do 2 for each 6 months.

I did this with 10 blocks and my blanket is a little too small, although the math was perfect. Anyhow, I realized that I greatly dislike weaving in ends on a C2C blanket. Not sure why, but my ends are always popping out now years later. So that was the worst part, even after having a few days in a row with the same color, the ends were a pain for this pattern.

Thank you for all the wonderful ideas! In 2017, my sister-in-law gave me two skeins (one eggplant and the other coral colored) of acrylic yarn for Christmas and I didn’t know what to make so I started a temperature blanket but I made two mistakes which resulted in an unfinished blanket: 1) I made the starting chain way too long (sofa length) and 2) I used a stitch dictionary to add variety which made the blanket too big and hot to work on in the Summer, which is why I ended up with an unfinished blanket.

Hello! Great video. I made my first temperature blanket in 2022 and really enjoyed it. It was the high temperature every Wednesday, so less of a commitment. I decided to do the high and low temp. every Wednesday since I really prefer low temps and the cooler colors and I loved the way it turned out. I'm doing two in 2023. One will be a pregnancy weekly high and low temperature for my first grandchild. The second will be a traditional color range with the weekly high and low temperatures. Such fun!
