To be accurate it also needs one coin light to be burnt out, and the other to be flickering. Also one of the coin return buttons needs to be permanently halfway in.

Actually, to be truly authentic, many of the Tempest games had problem with the CRT failing, and the game will be appear to be experiencing an never ending earth quake.

Tempest was my favorite game growing up. I'm getting one of these machines. I wish they would do Phoenix which is an obscure shooter but was always one of my favs in the arcades. Game on!

Tempest was one of my favorite arcade games back in the day, but I never found a home version I liked because of the spinner control could never quite be duplicated.

Yes, without a spinner the game is 95% impossible to play. IMO, Tempest is, by far, the best designed arcade game of all time.

I have both their Centipede and Tempest cabs, with the SF2 cab on pre-order. Been really happy with them. They're also the perfect size for using as props for 1/6 scale Hot Toys figures. Ever seen Darth Vader playing Centipede? I have :)

That mini cab of Tempest is amazing. It looks just like the real one. I seen and played a real one before and I loved it. I loved feel of it and the look of the vector graphics too.

I bought one and it is awesome for any Tempest fan from back in the day. Great to have one of my favorite arcade games at home without having to buy a full sized arcade machine and the headaches that go with maintaining it. As you said in the review, the only problem is the spinner knob is not a free flowing spinner like the one in the arcade. It has click points so you have to work a little more to get from one side of the grid to the other which can be a pain at the faster higher levels. Overall, well worth the price ~$120.

Rotary encoder for the 'spinner' - Not dissimilar to the roller on the average mouse. You'll notice the 'indents' are similarly placed! They're also commonly used in cars for radio/stereo controls!

I bought one. My only beef is that the key to the arcade Tempest was the spinner wheel. It was free rolling so you could get from one side to the other in an instant which is crucial at the higher levels. You use the side of your palm to roll around. The spinner on the New Wave Toys mini is click-based so you eventually you can never get to where you need to go. If you want to play the first 4 levels, this works, but for experienced players, you will be frustrated. That said, it's easier than moving a 300 lb real machine into your house.

Coins would have been cooler if they were gold'ish tokens. I was wondering when Clint would notice the coin slots are buttons as he kept talking about them and they have the big stickers right beside them :P I love little things like this. As a kid in the 70s and teen in the 80s I would have died for this. Take it to school and charge for play lol. Line those coins up on the screen so its your turn next.

there is 40 cent mod that turns that crappy knob into a decent spinner. I did it and it work about 90% as good as real spinner. Also Arcadee1up now sells real spinners for $25.

the fast spinning doesn't work because of the polling rate of the processor, it just ignore the movements if two of them are off of the refresh rate capturing it.

The one thing I don't like about this replicade is the fact that it doesn't (and can't, I guess) use a vector display, so the lines will always look sort of pixelated.

Tempest seems like the perfect option for this form factor, abstract enough for the tiny screen. The Street Fighter one just seems like a bad idea, a novelty sure but not all all suitable for the scale.

The TICK on the knob is there ON PURPOSE. The tick is one move of the character. I played this FOREVER. I could play all the way to the black on my first game at the height of my playing. Too bad this company doesn't have this anymore. That really sucks.
