Temple Grandin, an animal welfare expert and designer of livestock facilities, lectured at Kennedy Hall Feb. 24 during her last visit to campus as a Rhodes Class of '56 Professor. Grandin, who has autism, has spent her career figuring out what frightens pigs and cattle.

A brilliant lady, years ahead of her time. I was lucky to meet her in Montana a few years ago.

Isn't she amazing? I think in pictures too.But I have always had 'language'. Only in my early twenties did I realize that a lot of other people cant 'visualize', or see pictures in their minds.

You must watch the movie about her its just amazing. Clare Danes performance is just amazing. Temple Grandin continues her work non stop. She talked about dogs not socialized which makes the dog fight. My adopted dog is just like this and now I know why!! He will attack any animal. I feel sad for him and do my best to avoid any contac with dogs especially. He is never off his leash. Temple is great and listening to her can help us deal with our pets.

Any sharp noise sets me on high alert. This includes snapping, whistling of any type, fire alarms, shreiking, stuff like that. I have AS, so I do have sensory problems. Certain noises are several times worse than fingernails on chalk boards. There are sertain foods I can't eat because of the texture. I can't eat green beans, apple sauce, pudding, jello, mashed potatoes, stuff like that without gagging. I wear the exact same type of long cotton dress every day. I rely on audio VERY MUCH.

Another video of Temple Grandin that is so low vollume, I can barely hear it sitting in front of my computer. Why can we not hear it like most of the other videos. Some priority for low volume is set and is it intentional? Please try to improve this. It seems it can be reset on so many interesting topics and I dearly love this intelligent woman and believe she has very valuable informaiton I sincerely wish to hear. Please get the volulme of audio at a normal level for KZbin as even with ear phones it is not sufficiently audible.

I love Temple Grandin and think she has a very good general feel for how to approach dog training-one size does not fit all-and most of all appreciate how balanced and logical she is about a subject that is emotionally charged for most people (due to anthropomorphization). So it's with a supreme level of respect and admiration that I offer a piece of criticism from this lecture-her characterization of remote training collars (e collars or shock collars as she refers to them) is deeply inaccurate. She's not a trainer and not agenda driven so I don't resent the error, but it's important for people to understand that e collars are advanced, nuanced tools used primarily for off leash training. Good e collar training is done almost exclusively at low levels that humans often can't perceive (though the creation of supersitions, which she described in the video w the cattle example, may sometimes be necessary w rare life or death hazards like rattlesnakes). The collar is conditioned in gradually, and the meaning of the stimulation-'come near me'-is done methodically over time with extremely low levels. Corrections come way down the road, and again, never at the level dr grandin described in the vid (aside from the aforementioned contexts, which are very rare). The collar is more like a nuanced language than a corrective tool. It buys the dog freedom and safety off leash, instead of mere license, which is all youre providing an unreliable/untrained dog when you allow her off leash. License gets dogs hurt or worse, and also presents a hazard to the community, even w docile yet noncompliant dogs (eg car crashes when swerving to avoid run away dog). If I had 30 minutes to demonstrate a quality e collar and proper training to dr grandin, and present the collar in the broader context of a balanced training paradigm, i'd be shocked if she didnt change her mind. But it's important to remember either way that despite her brilliance, dog training is not her area of expertise. That aside, she opens up entire new worlds of understanding between humans and dogs, and i encourage every owner to read her. Just be a filter, not a sponge.

Nothing "humane" in forcing innocent beings to get their throats slit! There is absolutely no necessity to kill these billions of creatures. We can thrive on a compassionate plant based diet!!!

Is there anything more pathetic than some guy with ringlet hair and rosy red lips singing "Save a treeeee, Save a coooow...." wearing leather sandals and playing a wooden guitar.
