What fittings would I need for a UV-5R? The MFJ website pictures the detail of the ends, But I am almost sure that taking the stock antenna from the radio and trying to install it on the window mount clip will not go. Take a look at the pictures, I believe MFJ has the same picture for both.
@temporarilyoffline8 ай бұрын
They don't make a model that connects to the UV-5R directly, you'd need an SMA adapter - which would depend on which model of MFJ-310 you get. If you were going to be taking the HT out of the car and putting the antenna back on, I'd get the BNC model of MFJ-310 and a BNC baofeng adapter like this one: amzn.to/3wKwd7r That would make the swap easier/faster - and SMA connectors have a limited life span of screw on/offs anyway, the adapters would make that last longer.

Only problem is for those of us with whip antennas, it will fold backwards with the wind. And they don't say what the weight or height maximum is if you want to use a longer antenna.
@temporarilyoffline8 ай бұрын
Yep, gotta use some judgement on that front for sure. My signalstick worked great and now I gotta get a signal stalk to test. Height is vehicle dependent, on my parents sports car it would be completely different than on my dually tow beast. Even just getting the rubber duck out of the cage is going to be an improvement.

I wouldn't have a problem running 100w through the cable. Anything more than that and I'd start testing/checking. Thile antenna couples capacitively to metal nearby (the car) for a ground plane effect - everything effects everything.

0:55 Let's be honest. The "ground plane" here is sketchy, at best. The mount may or may not actually be electrically bonded to that seemingly very-small part of the mount that may or may not be touching the body of the car when you roll up the window. The real benefit is that the mount gets the antenna out of the Faraday cage, right? No reason to go overboard.

Well that is a very smart and awesome little, window mount,, antenna. Though? You do get a better ground plane. On the roof of the vehicle. With a Mag Mount antenna. And generally. They have a smooth, silvered, protective tape over the magnet. So as not to, scratch, mar, Dent, Chip, the surface of the paint. Unless you've peeled it off? Did you peel yours off? I knew it! Remember not to, peel on yourself. Yeah. I made a big change in my life. As an, Amateur Radio Operator. Back in 1970. I didn't want to be an,, Amateur. And talk on the radio. No. I wanted to be a Professional. And talk on the radio. So I swapped my Ham License for a, 1st Class FCC Radiotelephone License. Instead. So I could talk on the radio. I didn't care if it was AM or FM. It certainly wasn't Single Side Blab. That sounds like Ducks Talking. Sometimes Chipmunk Ducks. Other times, it's Deep Ducks. That, Bob around on frequency. And so, I stopped being an, Amateur. Over five decades ago. When are you going to grow up? You don't have to play with little toy battery-operated radios anymore you know? And you can play rock 'n' roll. Or a ballgame if you like? I don't play with balls. I play with rock 'n' roll musicians. But only to record them. I don't want to ruin my hearing in a rock band I don't have control of the volume of. I mean sheesh? Who do you take me for? Pete Townsend? Roger Daltrey? Can they hear anymore at all? I'm really not into, Repeaters. In my younger days. It was all about Skip. In the HF bands. You know? 160-80-40-20-15-11-10-6 and old #2. I really just skipped over. Moving up to 535 kHz. Extending out to, 1600 kHz. Then tripping over 88 MHz. And stopping shy of the runway at 108 MHz. And occasionally went Flying with my Dad. Beyond 108 MHz. But that was about it. I never dabbled much with, UHF. I was more into, FUHF. Pretty much landing on VHF. You know how it is? When you really want to talk on the radio. And tell everybody.
