Great video and great advice. I bought that book in 1980. My dad had an OM10, which is why I bought a Minolta instead, still the only camera I can use with my eyes closed, not that it would be much use doing that! Three thoughts from me. First, ignore those who say you’re not a proper photographer if you don’t shoot manual all the time or if you crop the image. Nonsense. Second and perhaps more controversial, sometimes it is about the gear. Photography appeals to many types of people and it’s ok to want new kit, whether that be cameras, lenses or computers. It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t improve their pictures, what matters is that they get personal satisfaction from it. It’s like cycling , no one needs carbon fibre wheels and disc brakes but if buying them and riding them makes you happy, fine by me. Finally, I’d even go so far as saying that the final image matters less than many people think, provided the result isn’t depressing or frustrating the person. I get about 50% of my dopamine hit from pressing the shutter button rather than getting 100% from seeing the final image. In part that’s because my circumstances mean I don’t use my camera that often (maybe once every 6-8 weeks) so just getting it out and using it makes me happy. I delete about 98% of the resulting images, but that’s fine by me.

@@ianforber Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to reach out with such nice comments. I agree with everything you say. You definitely don’t have to shoot in manual mode to be a ‘proper’ photographer, but knowing how and being comfortable with manual definitely gives you more options. Exactly that! Getting the camera out is enough to make you feel good, even if you don’t get a ‘good’ shot. Technology can definitely help with your photography, eye tracking being one example, if you want to and have the wherewithal to do so, investing in kit is good for the soul too. But it’s not a necessity. Keep enjoying your photography, as that is the main thing 👍👍👍

Thank you. Wherewithal is an important point. No one should feel themselves pressured to get kit they can’t afford. I bought a Fuji XT-50 recently and I’ve been watching a lot of KZbin videos recommending buying the XT-5 as it’s “only” £400 more. Fine but £400 is £400i I don’t need to spend!

Hey, good to stumble on your channel. Common sense advice based on life experiences and a tactile mind. Having traveled a similar path and having lived the ‘College of Hard Knocks’ with photography, I’ll tune into your videos for a refresher course to help smooth out the path.

Thanks for the video. I agree with your manual recommendation. Especially since all of my medium format and large format cameras are manual exposure and manual focus.

Yep - Roger all points. Good list. Best tip is to learn to shoot in manual, because it will also help you do better in the auto modes, getting the right exposure up front. And, as you say, just shoot - and maybe ask questions later - but GET the shot, even if it sucks. You can rarely recreate the moment, except in a studio, and even then, maybe not. All good tips. Nicely scripted and illustrations reinforce the narrative. A lot of you-tubers get this wrong - good job here. JR
